This was an upload I had started working on a while back but never got it uploaded.  So I'll rectify that this morning.  This is the 1969-06-20 Jimi Hendrix concert at the multi day concert event held at San Fernando Valley State College (SFVSC).  It is also the following 1969-06-22 All Star Jam at the event with multiple artists including Jimi Hendrix jamming.

The waveform has no clipping but it is brickwalled unfortunately.  That makes it difficult to impossible to remaster.  But thankfully, the sound is excellent in the recordings.

For anyone who isn't sure what a brickwalled recording means, this is a rough description.  The audio has been (likely) clipped and then limited or compressed.  Many times this comes from a taper or label over amplifying a recording and then coming back and removing the clipping by using compression and/or limiting (limiting is used more often I believe in the actual recording) therefore forming a flat top and/or bottom to the waveform.  Instead of having spikes up and down showing the audio peaks and leaving a recording with room to work with the audio there is mostly flat parts in the top and bottom of the waveform with very few (usually quieter moments) peaks that were not clipped.  But this again is an excellent sounding recording thankfully.  Here is a screenshot of a song from the All Stars Jam and you can see, especially in the mid section, where there is no high or low peaks and the waveform is flattened:

I've only heard this recording once since I got it.  And the information given was quiet confusing as well at first.  I was thinking of the Newport Jazz Festival, the same festival Led Zeppelin played at in 1969, and was thinking this was Newport, Connecticut.  But this was the Newport Pop Festival in 1968 and 1969 it was called "Newport '69" and both were in California.  So the information is correct.

I'm very happy with the sound here even though I wish the high frequencies were just a little better.  But the recording doesn't suffer in the big picture and is very enjoyable.  It's excellent, but we cannot work with it to make it any better either.  I imagine the high frequencies were chopped to remove some  tape hiss (not bad at all) after it was over amplified to begin with (causing more hiss when done to tape recordings).  I'd rather have the high frequencies and not a hard limiter or compression done on a recording.  The more I learn about audio the more I appreciate when things are done correctly.

There are some missing parts in the show.  "Hear My Train A Comin'" is almost complete but incomplete unfortunately.  I believe it was the only song in the Hendrix set cut short.  It sounds like a few parts in between songs may be cut too but it is just brief, non musical parts.  But overall, it sounds like most things and songs are complete.  I'd have to look and see what all got played by Hendrix on both days to know for sure but you can do that if you're interested.  If rolls 5 and 6 were 60 minutes (presumably together) then it only makes sense something had to be cut.  Where is roll 7 though?  Would it have the uncut version of the show then?  Question I have and may never know the answer too :-)

You won't be disappointed in the sound if you are a Hendrix fan (or even if you aren't).  The recording itself was obviously a really good one and the label just had to mess with it but they did not ruin it either.

Fleetwood Mac: 1982-10-20 Oakland, CA (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

I'm taking a request break on this upload and putting up something different to break the monotony of Led Zeppelin and Journey uploads.  Not that they are not my favorites of course!

This is an excellent-to-superb sounding 1982 Fleetwood Mac show that for one reason or another gets passed around as a soundboard but it is not one.  If anyone listens when the music is not playing you can easily tell there is clapping close by and other telltale signs this is an excellent audience capture.

As I was wrapping up this post I went looking for some artwork.  And what I found was this show was not on 1982-09-20 but it was on 1982-10-20 instead.  So the original sharing party had the wrong date.  The wrong date is embedded in the FLAC files but I'm only making any corrections here in this post.  The artwork I found shows the same title as this upload but if you read on you'll see why it is not a perfect match.  The songs are all there.  But the artwork is how the show should have been tracked!

The waveform looks perfect in this show and there is no audio clipping of course.  The sound is really a very well balanced mix where the band members can all be heard evenly and crisply as well.  The taper had to be sitting on the front row I'd guess because the audience noise is very, very low to none.  You hear people clapping and weak (audio wise) comments from the crowd between songs.  But when the music is playing, that is all you hear.

There are two things I don't like about this recording.  Whoever tracked it tracked segments of conversation from the band on stage before the song and titled them with the songs name and "intro".  This is understandable if the person on stage is talking for a while.  But when they're 5 or 10 second clips, just leave it at the end of the track and start a new track when the next song starts playing.  But what bugs me more is the fact this was obviously ripped from a CD/CD-R and the person who did this ripped it using TAO (track at once).  This means between every one of the 30 joining tracks you have two seconds of silence.  It really breaks the flow of the show.  But the good thing is we have this show and the errors can be fixed.  I thought about doing it myself before uploading it but I don't feel like putting the time and effort into doing this before the upload.  If I ever do, I'll re-upload the show fixed.

As I mentioned, this is a very clean recording.  The high frequencies are very strong and the low frequencies sound fine.  I'd have a little more bottom end (low frequencies) personally but it is not a problem in this recording really.  It's just a taste or preference to me.  The sound is not a problem and it does NOT sound like a tin can (or all high frequencies with no low frequencies) kind of recording.  Fans of Fleetwood Mac will enjoy this show without any doubt.

There are a few songs in the show that were new ones at the time in 1982 and I personally hate them.  The song "Eyes of The World" really flat out stinks to me.  I'm sure some will like it and I'm just stating my opinion here.  It is too "non Fleetwood Mac" sounding and really shows how they were changing to the 1980's popular sound more at this point.  But the regular, older songs sound great and are played right too.  They are not done in a modernized way or anything from what I've listened to (so far disc 1).

I've had this show for a while and really do not know where I got it?  The text file has no lineage or any real information other than song titles and where the show was at.  It didn't even have the right date.

I don't want to sound as if I am complaining about this recording because I am grateful I have it.  It is an awesome sounding recording and a job well done by the taper.  I just wish that there had been more care taken when the discs were ripped and someone had checked the files before putting them out there because they would have (a) noticed it is not a soundboard and (b) noticed 2 second haps between every track.

As for disc 2, I've still never heard it.  And I cannot review it now either because I have things I have to do.  But I know people will enjoy this show as I have been too.  And who knows, maybe I'll do a remaster and fix the small problems as soon as I get caught up on requests?

Led Zeppelin: 1980-06-26 Vienna, Austria (FLAC_AUD Master Source 1_2 CD)

This is another requested 1980 Led Zeppelin show I have never uploaded yet, so I am uploading this morning.  This was the band's last Vienna, Austria concert and I really only have a few recordings for this show.  A lot less than all other 1980 shows in fact.

There really is not too much information on this specific source other than it is a master source.  And the audience recording sounds excellent-to-superb too so that is great since there are not many other options to choose from.

I imagine, but do not know for sure, that Winston Remasters will be doing a Live Omega Series remaster of this one sometime in the future if he already hasn't.  If he has, I have not seen it and of course do not have it.

The waveform looks fine and has no real audio clipping.  I say "no real" because there looks like one tiny spike in the waveform and it really amounts to nothing problematic either.

The artwork shows three extra tracks from another show at the end of disc two.  Those tracks are not in this download.  And the extra tracks from that show, the 1980-06-27 Nuremberg, Germany show, have not been uploaded here yet but will be soon in the upload for that show.

I am listening to the sow right now as I prepare this post and I like the mix.  I am hearing Robert Plants vocals, Jimmy Page's guitar, and John Bonham's drums cleanly.  John Paul Jones' bass is there but it is not as prevalent or up front as the rest of the band.  There is no problem with hearing JPJ however.  And his keyboards music is as clean and loud as the rest of the band too.  This is a very good job by the taper from what I have heard so far. And he seems to be close to the stage too.

This seems to be the full show based on the length of it.  It is longer than the last two concerts from Led Zeppelin's 1980 tour I have uploaded also.  The setlist doesn't change much other than in they dropped a song in the show. They do not play "Achilles Last Stand" in this show. The band seemed to have been playing the same setlist usually to this point in the 1980 tour  I have noticed in my recent uploads.  There was usually one change in each show and the final song was that change.  In the previous Bremen, Germany from 1980-06-23 show they ended with "Communication Breakdown", and in the upload before that, the Rotterdam 1980-06-21 show, they ended with "Heartbreaker".  In this show they end with "Whole Lotta Love".

I'm not giving a full review of this show because I really do not have the time this morning.  I want to go ahead and get it uploaded so you can enjoy it.

I have to admit that the more I listen to this show the more I almost feel like rating it as a superb audience recording.  There is some tape hiss but nothing distracting.  It is a good sign too that not much if any of the audio's high frequencies were taken out.  And there is not much crowd noise and definitely not the kind when there is any to interfere with the show.  I'm up to "Kashmir" now and have heard nothing in the show to complain about!    If anything; the sound has only improved.

I think somebody either makes Jimmy Page mad with a firecracker or his gear just went "pop" and the song just stops after that.  There is a long silence and then an Austrian person gets on the microphone and starts talking.  You hear the crowd saying "boo" after the Austrian mentions "Jimmy Page" and then the crowd gets happy again.  I wish I knew what was being said!  In the end the Austrian speaker on stage starts talking some English and says "the show must go on..." and he is talking about somebody in the audience and how they want to find them.  He seems to be asking the crowd to tell who the "neighbor" is.  The taper seems to take this time to stop the tape and do a tape flip and the rest of "White Summer" never gets played and needless to say "Black Mountain Side" never gets played either.  The band, without mentioning the incident, comes back on stage and starts playing "Kashmir" then.  A very interesting twist to the concert indeed.

UPDATE:
This is NOT in the text file.  I learned as this upload was almost complete that this is the source 1 out of two known sources recording.  I am trying to obtain a first generation copy of this same source right now to compare the two.  And I am looking for source 2 also but it does not seem to be in circulation at this time.  The source 2 recording is reportedly similar quality as this recording but the first generation copy of this source 1 recording sounds even better according to "pernod" in a 2011 post.  We'll see what happens!

Here is another long requested 1980 Led Zeppelin show I've never uploaded any copies of (yet) from the band's final tour.  This is the Winston Remasters copy of the Bremen, Germany show using first generation sources for both the soundboard and audience recordings mixed to form an almost complete (minus 10 - 15 seconds according to Winston remasters) show.  This is mostly a soundboard recording.  And it sounds excellent too!

As one might expect, the waveform looks great with no audio clipping.  The waveform shows more amplification in this show than last night's Rotterdam upload.  But there is no audio clipping and there doesn't appear to be any compression or limiting as far as I can tell of the audio either.  Winston Remasters is well known for remastering and making some great sounding upgrades to Led Zeppelin shows and this one is no exception.

As I listen to the show and prepare this post, I did notice the beginning audio from the soundboard section sounds as if the audio is still being managed of messed with a little bit.  At one point, John Bonham's drums get really loud.  But it is quickly adjusted and the rest sounds just fine.  I'm sure this is from the source that recorded the soundboard audio on this night.

The audience source for the show is first generation as well as the soundboard but it is only a good-to-great sounding audio.  You really first hear the patch with the audience recording used during music in "Tramples Underfoot" and it makes you really glad we have the soundboard for the most of the show.  It isn't horrible audience audio  sound wise and you can still hear the mix well enough.  It is just a drastic snap from the soundboard to the lesser sounding audience recording and it makes you glad to have such a great sounding show (and more complete than if there was no audience source) for the most part.

Unlike last night's upload of the Rotterdam 1980 show, this one musically starts out with the soundboard.  The audience portions in the mix are mostly in between songs it sounds like.  The Rotterdam 1980 show had a few songs that were from one of the two audience sources for the first few songs.  This show today seems to be a lot more complete from the soundboard recording perspective.

The mix sounds very nice once the show gets started and all vocals and instruments can be heard cleanly and evenly.  Even the comments from John Bonham and Jimmy Page's talking, something he seldom did on stage prior to 1980, are up front and easily discernible (well, Bonham's always hard to understand but you get the point).  Page's guitar is really clean and the rest of the band can be heard better in the mix than in a lot of the shows on this tour in Europe.

There is a tape glitch where a channel drops in "Hot Dog" for just a second and the balance shifts to the right channel.  But these are expected types of issues with old analog tapes too.  There are some spots where the sound does change slightly also.  I don't know if this is something caused by the soundman adjusting the soundboard or just why it's present but it is really minor stuff and doesn't ruin the show or enjoyment of it at all.  Many will never even notice it most likely.

The band sounds tight but loose on this night.  Plant seems to be on key and the band seems to be playing in synchronization.  There are a few exceptions where a line is forgotten for a split second it sounds like or Page doesn't come in at the right second with his guitar or John Paul Jones on his keyboards.  But this is not sloppy playing and it is how Led Zeppelin always did things.  That is the loose part of the show I guess.  And since the sound is so evenly mixed with the vocals and instruments it is very easy to hear any of the tight and/or loose moments in this show.

It's just too bad this was getting closer and closer to John Bonham's death in just over three more months.  The end was drawing near for Led Zeppelin's live shows.

SPECIAL NOTICE: Mega Site For File Sharing???

Currently, some of the Mega links are working and some are not!

It came to my attention a few days ago that all of the files I have been uploading to the mirror Mega site were also being saved (a third copy) to my PC's "My Documents" folder.  This was not something I wanted since I spent a whole day cleaning up over 300 GB of files.  I did not expect to have to keep a third copy, the first being the files I created and the second being the zipped copy I uploaded with the third being the copy Mega puts into the folder, on my hard drive.  I try to keep my hard drive clean and running good and I have drives for backing up my files.

So after moving my zipped files to their drives and moving the unzipped copies I had created to their drives, I deleted the files Mega put into the folder on my PC.  It removed all of the files from the cloud.  I am not hosting the files.  Mega (like FileFactory) is suppose to be doing this.  I am not the server aka the cloud) these files should be saved and shared from.  So why is this happening.  If I had all of my files I have uploaded here on Mega, I would not have the storage capacity on my 1 TB PC drive to keep them all in the "My Documents/Mega" folder.  It is ridiculous to have to keep an unnecessary, extra copy on my PC.

I will not be using Mega if this is the way it works.  I have looked in every possible spot on the website and the Megasync client and have found no settings that apply to this issue.  If anyone can help and there is a way for me to upload the files as I have been and then delete them off of my own drive (after backing them up on external drives), please let me know.  Leave a comment or make a post over on the Facebook Bootradr's Blind Boot Blog (community group or secret group if you are a member) pages please.  Otherwise, I cannot use Mega to "host" my files and I know it is easier for some of you to download using Mega too.

Led Zeppelin: 1980-06-21 Rotterdan, The Netherlands (FLAC_SB/AUD 3 Source Mix_2 CD)

Here is a requested show from just a couple of months short of 36 years ago at the time of this posting.  This is a great-to-excellent sounding recording of a 1980 Led Zeppelin show I have never uploaded anything from before.  This is the complete show minus a little chatter between "Stairway To Heaven" and "Rock and Roll" reportedly.

This was the band's fourth show as they started out on the European leg of their 1980 touring.  This would be their very last tour ever.

This audio is composed of a three sources mix.  The soundboard first generation, audience source 1 first generation, and audience source 2 master recordings were all used in the mix to make the show as complete as possible.  Musically, it is complete.

NOTE:

The sound ranges from great in the audience portions of the show to excellent in the soundboard portions.  The waveform looks great too with no audio clipping.

The beginning audience source runs through the first part of "The Rain Song" where the soundboard kicks in and the sound improves as you might expect.  In the beginning tracks, or the audience portion, there are a few channel dropouts of the audio on  one side.  It quickly returns and doesn't last for more than a second or three.  I'm guessing the taper was either fooling with his recorder's balance or the tape itself over time may have had issues?  I don't know though.  There is no crackling or popping sounds as if the channel's microphone was unplugged or the tape was having issues.

In the soundboard portion, which is the majority of the recording, there are a few sound changes as well.  But it really isn't often and the soundboard audio sounds really clean and excellent.  I wish there was more bottom end frequencies (bass) in the beginning portion of the soundboard recording.  But even without it the show still sounds really nice.

I personally think the show could be made to sound even better with a knowledgeable remastering job done on it.  However, I am glad I have the unaltered copy because that is what you really want.  You cannot "unmaster" or get a recording back to its unaltered state once the work has been done unless you save the original, unaltered audio.  People try and make efforts at back tracking steps to get recordings to sound more natural.  But it never really sounds like the unaltered copy and that unaltered audio is what you want to do a proper remastering of a show with.  You keep the unaltered copy and make a new, remastered copy when trying to improve a show's sound.

I think on disc 1 the best sounding songs, and from a performance and not sound standpoint, are "Trampled Underfoot" and "Since I've Been Loving You".  Jimmy Page adds a little extra part to the end of his "Trampled Underfoot" solo that you don't normally hear.  It's a cool ending to the solo.  And "Since I've Been Loving You" he also plays a heartfelt guitar in.

While I like all Led Zeppelin years live, at the same time the 1980 tour is my least favorite for the band's live shows.  The best songs, songs I recently called staples in their shows, were no longer played and they were cutting their concerts down to shorter shows.  Still, a short two hour show like this one blows away the modern day 80 - 90 minute concerts most artist perform (musically and time wise).  But the band was not quite as energized either in a lot of the 1980 shows.  They didn't sound bad really.  They just didn't usually sound as good.  But one song always seemed to me to sound as if it was saying goodbye in a really sad, but really superbly played way.  It was "Stairway To Heaven" and as you listen to just about any 1980 live version of it you can hear the band sounding excellent but in a way sounding like they were saying goodbye too.  Just listen to the song and Page's solo too in this show.  And after John Henry Bonham died in September of 1980, it was all over.  But they went out strong and still playing live and proudly as Led Zeppelin!

I've got a number of 1980 shows I have never uploaded of Led Zeppelin that I will be uploading soon.  They have been requested for a long time and by a few different people.  I'm just trying to catch up on requests and add a few of my own in the middle as I do so.

Evanescence: 2015-11-15 Dallas, TX (FLAC_Bootradr Master AUD_2 CD)

It's taken me about five months to finally work on getting this show I recorded late last year ready.  And it was an excellent show by Evanescence too.  I have liked this band, one of the few modern day bands I like, since I first heard some of their music in 2004/2005.  And since 2006, I have been to all of their concerts here in my area and I have recorded them too.

This was a fun show even though I do not like this venue.  The venue was called Palladium Ballroom up until around 2014 when the name changed over to South Side Ballroom.  On this night, my buddy, "whotapes", picked me up and we both went to the show with our recorders and microphones ready to have a great night.  And we did.

The reason for the title I gave this show, Going To California (Via Dallas), was due to the fact that Evanescence only did three shows in the USA in 2015.  After playing a Japan festival they decided to go ahead and play in Atlanta, Dallas, and Los Angeles before going back home.  And being a huge Led Zeppelin fan, I was very happy to hear the band do the song "Going To California".  Their third and last show (or the next one) was in California so the title only made sense (to me anyhow).

The opening band on this night was named Veridia.  The sounded pretty good also.  I used my Tascam DR-40 digital recorder and tested it on their performance.  While I know the recorder and its condenser microphones do a great job, I'm glad I switched over to use my Zoom H4n with the external Sony microphone for the Evanescence performance.  The venue is flat and it is a standing room only type of facility.  So with a lot of people standing, pushing by you, etc as you record you really have to have a recorder's microphones above head level.  This is a good idea anyhow, but in this type of environment, it is more of a necessity.  The Tascam did not get what I had hoped for due to the crowd arrangement so once I used my Zoom recorder and Sony microphone I was able to easily hold the microphone above the crowd and not look like I was going to be tazing someone (the way these digital recorders look).

The waveform was perfect and I sent the audio to "techtuts" who did a light clean up.  He said he just did a light EQ'ing and added a light reverb.  I believe he may have done some spectral repair too because I'd asked if he could remove some of the more annoying crowd noise moments in the recording (almost always between songs).  His work made a big difference in the audio and it definitely helped it sound better.

The crowd was a little noisy but the recording came out great considering what I was hearing behind and around me.  I cannot remember if I used the Sony microphone's 90° or 120° setting though.  I think in this case, one being in a smaller venue and not very far from the stage in the venue, I pretty sure I used the 120° setting.  I normally don't use this setting unless I am closer to the stage and want to get a wider coverage in the recording from the speakers at a venue.  The closer you get, the wider the pattern needs to be for a full range of sound.  The down side is you can also get some crowd talk in the recording too.  But the crowd noise is not bad even though there are a few annoying parts where people yelled out or were yapping about how great the band was or something else.

The band put on a spectacular show as they always do.  The setlist contained songs from their past all the way up to their last, 2011, release of their self titled Evanescence CD.  And I am pretty sure they added a new song of their own too.  I don't know if it will be on an upcoming CD release or if it might have been some other band's song they did.  But from the sound of it, I think it is their song?  The song is titled "New Way To Bleed" and I haven't heard it before.

Well, before making this post I went ahead and looked up information on "New Way To Bleed" and it is an Evanescence song they made for the soundtrack to the movie The Avengers according to Wikipedia.  This is still the first time I've heard it and hopefully someone else in Atlanta and/or Los Angeles recorded those shows and they'll surface someday soon.  I'd be interested in knowing if this was a onetime only song or not.

Thankfully "whotapes" brought a small, easy to use camera to the show.  I have been bringing my Canon camera to shows for years now but this venue was not one I wanted to be bringing a ton of gear into like I have in the past.  The last time I saw Evanescence was at this same venue and I got kicked out and readmitted for filming the concert.  They seem to be more tight on these things here and that's one reason I don't like the venue.  But "whotapes" was able to get some good photos and he sent them to me to make some artwork.  The artwork is nothing special but I still like including artwork when I record a show.  So I tried t remember how Photoshop use to work and then put together something from "whotapes'" photos and one of my smartphone pictures (the front art) to make the upload complete.

This is the second source recording of this show.  My friend "whotapes" uploaded his recording within a day or two of the concert.
