Lynyrd Skynyrd: 1976-08-27 Cape Cod, MA (FLAC_AUD Master_1 CD)

Today is the 39th anniversary of this excellent recording by Dan Lampinski of Lynyrd Skynyrd's concert in Cape Cod, Massachusetts in 1976.

For anyone who isn't ware of Dan Lampinski recordings, they are usually excellent or superb recordings.  He recorded a lot of shows for himself years ago.  And not too many years ago, he became aware others also liked taping, collecting, sharing, and listening to recordings just like what he had.  So he and some others helping him with tasks started putting his well preserved master recordings online for us to freely enjoy.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was opening on this night for Jeff Beck and The Jan Hammer Band according to the advertisement included in Lampinski's download.  That's another great think he seemingly did.  He'd get some sort of ad, memento, or something from the show that came from the time it occurred and he scanned the images and shared them with all of us.

Obviously, all thanks goes to Dan and his friends that helped get these well preserved and awesome classic rock shows out there for fans like us!

The instruments, vocals, and mix are really excellent in this show.  Van Zant may be a little quieter in the audio than the rest of the band but you'll have no problems hearing him or what he is saying either.  And as with all Lampinski recordings I have seen, there is no audio clipping seen in the waveform.  On the two tracks where tape splicing was done, there is a sharp jumping from one point to the next in the song where presumably audio was lost.  There is no silence and the song just jumps from one point to the next.

Part of the releases of the Lampinski shows was they came with great lineage and artwork too.  This specific upload had TIFF artwork which is a higher image quality file.  But since many people may not be familiar with that file extension or even have a program that will open it, I saved a copy as the standard JPEG file type too and I'm adding those files.  The TIFF images are still there too.

In a year and two months after this show, on 1977-10-20, Lynyrd Skynyrd would take their final flight as many members died in a plane crash.  So historically speaking, this is a piece of history here not commercially available and available to people like us who enjoy the live experience and sound.

At the end of "T For Texas" you can hear a guy asking Lampinski "what's the mic for" and he replies back something about "engineers for the (crowd maybe?)" and the guy asking just kind of laughs.  There is more crowd noise in this show but it is not the distracting kind or obnoxious kind coming from a drunk or anything.  It doesn't interfere with the music's fidelity and is no problem at all.  The crowd was really enjoying the show you can tell!

Someone yells "Freebird" before "Sweet Home Alabama" starts and I found that rather funny.  Unlike people yelling it today at live shows as a joke, this was when it really meant something and people wanted to hear the song.  This is where it all had started in the days.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Lynyrd Skynyrd: 1975-03-19 Chattanooga, TN + Bonus Material (FLAC_SB_1 CD)

Before I begin, I was working on this late last night before I went to bed and the exact date of the show was unknown.  So the text file and embedded metadata in the tracks will show a date of "1975-03-00" since I didn't have the full date as I prepared the upload.  Truth be told, I don't feel like going back through and redoing everything just to add "17" to the file set.  I did name the folder before zipping it up with the correct date of 1975-03-19 though.

This is an excellent soundboard recording that I don't know a lot of information about.  There is a periodic tick or click type sound that sometime appears in the right channel.  It does this on another copy of the show I have too and I believe it is in the recording.  It's not too bad and it's not a show stopper either.

One thing I like about this show is the tracks in it.  There are a number of tracks that really didn't get radio play much over the years so it is nice hearing them.  The regular tracks are there too, but the not as familiar ones give it a fresh kind of appeal to me.  I really like "Am I Losin'" myself.

This is obviously not the complete concert.  With "Sweet Home Alabama fading out just 2 1/2 minutes into the song and with no "Freebird" on the CD, it's obvious the show is incomplete.  I may upload a complete concert from the boys real soon if anyone is interested in one.

I had to do some internet searching last night for any useable artwork for this show.  It is not high resolution artwork unfortunately (like the previously uploaded show's is).  And the best scans I could find were bad scans that needed cropping.  So the file size is even smaller now.  The artwork is 144 dpi, and that is a little less than the 300 dpi
(or higher) artwork I like to use.

The artwork also has an extra track on it not in this upload.  It is the bonus material, believed to be from the Los Angeles 1975 show, so the Chattanooga show is not shortened any.  The last three tracks in this upload are the bonus tracks and the artwork shows the fourth track not available.  The bonus tracks are also soundboard recordings as well.

I hope you enjoy this show...

Lynyrd Slynyrd: 1973-10-30 Memphis, TN (FLAC_SB/Pre-FM Master Reel_1 CD)

NOTE (2015-09-04):  I just became aware this morning that this show had been an officially release item as a 2 disc set in 2000.  Even though it is now out of print (OOP), the songs can still be purchased individually online.  For this reason I am pulling the link to this recording so as to not break any copyright infringement laws.  Thanks to Mick for letting me know about this too!

This is a superb soundboard of Lynyrd Skynyrd in Memphis playing a concert.  This recording is so superb that I waited a while before uploading it to see if it was an official release.  I was convinced it had to be from how good it sounded.  But I find no release of this material and I'm going ahead and uploading it here now for you to enjoy.  I just wish it was the whole show that was available!

By the way, I did not misspell "Greese" either :-)  It's the way it is spelled on the artwork.

I've not uploaded too many of the Lynyrd Skynyrd shows I have yet.  I really started getting into them a lot more about four years ago as I saw some videos of them live and heard how tight they were playing together.  What a shame they couldn't stick around (the original band that is) just a little longer and have kept on making great songs and putting on great shows.

I hope you enjoy this show...

Lynyrd Skynyrd: 1976-03-07 San Francisco, CA (Pro Shot DVD)

Here's an excellent recording and performance of Lynyrd Skynyrd in San Francisco at Winterland Ballroom in 1976.  My two favorite songs, because of the guitar playing primarily, are "T For Texas" and "Freebird".  Watching the three guitarists playing off each other as they moved along in the solos is really incredible.  It's some of the most superb guitar work I've heard so far from this band.

When I created this DVD a few years ago, I didn't have the software I really wanted so I just created this with chapters and no menu figuring I'd recreate the DVD later.  But I never have built a new DVD and I'm happy with the sound and way this one came out too.

This is probably my favorite Skynyrd show.  The band plays incredibly well, and in fact, they sound better to me than they do on the 1975 Winterland DVD I also created (like this one).  I believe that they were one of the rare bands that were getting better each year rather than the opposite.

Looking around yesterday, I realized I'd forgotten about some other unreleased DVD concerts of Skynyrd I have too.  At least two of them are in color video also.  However, this show, as well as the 1975 Winterland and 1977 New Jersey shows, was filmed in black and white.  But it's great looking quality black and white too.  Other than one camera angle with a small burned out pixels area, the video seems flawless to me!

As far as lossiness goes, it's lossy!  That's unfortunate.  But it's from the same source as the Journey (and many other) shows at Winterland and that's Wolfgang's Vault.  At this time, they seem to be the only holders of the master, lossless video.  And it's been this way for years and years.  These shows all come from what is commonly called "Bill Graham's Vault" and were filmed at his venues by the cameras set up to professionally shoot shows at Winterland.

I hope you enjoy this free "free concert"...

Lynyrd Skynyrd: 1976-04-07 Boston, MA (FLAC_AUD Master_2 CD)

This excellent sounding show was recorded 38 years ago tonight by a taper in Boston, Massachusetts.  This show, digitally transferred from the master cassette tapes, really sound excellent too.  I've had it for a few years but have never listened to it myself yet other than on the PC.  But it's easy to tell the sound is great as well as the performance and it seems this is the full concert (with one track cut in) too.

It was about a year and after this concert, on 1977-10-20, Lynyrd Skynyrd's chartered Convair 240 aircraft, one that was operated and maintained out of Addison, Texas, crashed in Mississippi killing three of the band members.  And according to The History Channel's History.com website, the band Aerosmith had looked at this same plane before Lynyrd Skynyrd but had concerns about the flight crew and passed on the aircraft.  That may have very well saved that band's lives?

I got this show off of Dime I believe and the transfer and work on this show we have was done by Steve Hopkins, a person I don't know, but also a name I've come to associate with quality.  So a special thanks goes out to him for this recording!  I'm leaving it "as is" and not doing anything but verifying the files and re-sharing it.

Each time I've heard the song "Freebird" through the years, it always takes me back to my first girlfriend Sheila Marie S.  I recall how I felt as we walked along the seawall in Galveston on the hot 4th of July Summer 198X night too.  She was a runaround, liar, and I was totally in love with her still.  But I knew I had to set her free and move on (even though it wound up being about 6 months later).  As we were walking back to where I'd parked the car, after being at the beach all day, and as the fireworks show was going, the song "Freebird" was blaring loud and clear from someone's vehicle.  This was the days when everyone had or wanted the loudest sound system and had their Kicker box speakers they could remove and put on their car roof, truck bed, or wherever they wanted to and just crank it up.  But as the song was playing on a local radio station, the music was blaring, and she was being distant; I knew it was over.  And this one song can take me back to that day in my youth every time :-)  Those were the days!  And I made it through them just fine :-)

Anyhow, getting back on track now, this is the first Skynyrd show I think I've uploaded here.  I've got a lot more of their shows, both great sounding and horrible sounding recordings, and over time I'll upload a few more.

Even though I never really bought a lot of Lynyrd Skynyrd tapes or CD's growing up, I always liked them.  The modern version of the bad is OK, but it is nothing like the old day band.  Honestly, I don't think I even have any recordings of the more modern version of the band.  I'm not saying they aren't any good.  I'm just saying I like what can not be reproduced and that's the band that died in October of 1977.

If I have time today, I might upload one of two DVD's I have of Skynyrd from 1975 and 1976 at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco.  Like the Journey Winterland DVD I uploaded a few days ago, they're black and white videos but they're better quality too.  And the performances are outstanding.  Especially watching the three guitarists playing off of each other and extending solos and songs beyond any radio version makes these two DVD's a couple of my favorite Skynyrd performances.  Plus, I have another black and white DVD of their last known show to be professionally shot in early October (I believe it's early October) of 1977.  It's called "Final Flight" fittingly.

I hope you enjoy the concert!  Until next time...
