Evanescence: 2015-11-15 Dallas, TX (FLAC_Bootradr Master AUD_2 CD)

It's taken me about five months to finally work on getting this show I recorded late last year ready.  And it was an excellent show by Evanescence too.  I have liked this band, one of the few modern day bands I like, since I first heard some of their music in 2004/2005.  And since 2006, I have been to all of their concerts here in my area and I have recorded them too.

This was a fun show even though I do not like this venue.  The venue was called Palladium Ballroom up until around 2014 when the name changed over to South Side Ballroom.  On this night, my buddy, "whotapes", picked me up and we both went to the show with our recorders and microphones ready to have a great night.  And we did.

The reason for the title I gave this show, Going To California (Via Dallas), was due to the fact that Evanescence only did three shows in the USA in 2015.  After playing a Japan festival they decided to go ahead and play in Atlanta, Dallas, and Los Angeles before going back home.  And being a huge Led Zeppelin fan, I was very happy to hear the band do the song "Going To California".  Their third and last show (or the next one) was in California so the title only made sense (to me anyhow).

The opening band on this night was named Veridia.  The sounded pretty good also.  I used my Tascam DR-40 digital recorder and tested it on their performance.  While I know the recorder and its condenser microphones do a great job, I'm glad I switched over to use my Zoom H4n with the external Sony microphone for the Evanescence performance.  The venue is flat and it is a standing room only type of facility.  So with a lot of people standing, pushing by you, etc as you record you really have to have a recorder's microphones above head level.  This is a good idea anyhow, but in this type of environment, it is more of a necessity.  The Tascam did not get what I had hoped for due to the crowd arrangement so once I used my Zoom recorder and Sony microphone I was able to easily hold the microphone above the crowd and not look like I was going to be tazing someone (the way these digital recorders look).

The waveform was perfect and I sent the audio to "techtuts" who did a light clean up.  He said he just did a light EQ'ing and added a light reverb.  I believe he may have done some spectral repair too because I'd asked if he could remove some of the more annoying crowd noise moments in the recording (almost always between songs).  His work made a big difference in the audio and it definitely helped it sound better.

The crowd was a little noisy but the recording came out great considering what I was hearing behind and around me.  I cannot remember if I used the Sony microphone's 90° or 120° setting though.  I think in this case, one being in a smaller venue and not very far from the stage in the venue, I pretty sure I used the 120° setting.  I normally don't use this setting unless I am closer to the stage and want to get a wider coverage in the recording from the speakers at a venue.  The closer you get, the wider the pattern needs to be for a full range of sound.  The down side is you can also get some crowd talk in the recording too.  But the crowd noise is not bad even though there are a few annoying parts where people yelled out or were yapping about how great the band was or something else.

The band put on a spectacular show as they always do.  The setlist contained songs from their past all the way up to their last, 2011, release of their self titled Evanescence CD.  And I am pretty sure they added a new song of their own too.  I don't know if it will be on an upcoming CD release or if it might have been some other band's song they did.  But from the sound of it, I think it is their song?  The song is titled "New Way To Bleed" and I haven't heard it before.

Well, before making this post I went ahead and looked up information on "New Way To Bleed" and it is an Evanescence song they made for the soundtrack to the movie The Avengers according to Wikipedia.  This is still the first time I've heard it and hopefully someone else in Atlanta and/or Los Angeles recorded those shows and they'll surface someday soon.  I'd be interested in knowing if this was a onetime only song or not.

Thankfully "whotapes" brought a small, easy to use camera to the show.  I have been bringing my Canon camera to shows for years now but this venue was not one I wanted to be bringing a ton of gear into like I have in the past.  The last time I saw Evanescence was at this same venue and I got kicked out and readmitted for filming the concert.  They seem to be more tight on these things here and that's one reason I don't like the venue.  But "whotapes" was able to get some good photos and he sent them to me to make some artwork.  The artwork is nothing special but I still like including artwork when I record a show.  So I tried t remember how Photoshop use to work and then put together something from "whotapes'" photos and one of my smartphone pictures (the front art) to make the upload complete.

This is the second source recording of this show.  My friend "whotapes" uploaded his recording within a day or two of the concert.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Evanescence: 2012-02-08 Kanagawa, Japan (FLAC_AUD_1 CD)

Today is the third anniversary of this Evanescence concert in Kanawag, Japan as they toured through Japan.  This is a great-to-excellent sounding show and was recorded from the 5th row.

I had considered doing some slight audio editing to the sound but elected not to do so.  The show sounds fine, the audio shows no real clipping in the waveform, and there really is no reason to mess with it.  I think it could be cleaned up just a little for better sound.  But don't get me wrong.  The sound is in no way bad either.

Evanescence is a band I really like a lot.  I love the harder music, the ballads, the lyrical content, and Amy Lee's vocal range and sound.  Even though it seems the band is disbanded as of last year, according to interviews with Amy Lee, this doesn't mean they are over and won't be back.  I really don't know what is going on with the band today but I hope they do come back.  I have been to each and every show they have performed in my area (2006, 2007, 2010, and two 2012 shows) and have recorded them.  And each and every show was an excellent performance by the band members too.

Thanks goes to "fab1" for recording the show and sharing it!  Thanks also goes to "mediaadcit" for re-uploading this show on another site recently.  I had all but two tracks that had transferred from a problem drive over to my hard drive from this show.  But with his upload of the same exact file set I had, it helped me out a lot in getting the two tracks I needed to upload the complete show.

I have a number of Evanescence show I hope to be able to upload soon.  It really depends on whether or not Office Depot, with a special SATA cable, is able to pull the data off of a drive or not that messed up mid last year.  I took the drive in Friday with a new 4TB drive to transfer about 3TB of data from the bad drive to the new one.  My warranty ends this Valentine's Day so I'm having to get this done fast.

I have a number of excellent and superb Evanescence shows on the bad 3TB drive that would not transfer over to the 4TB drive via the regular USB cable to PC way.  I did not have this part of the drive backed up yet (I was actually starting to back it up when the drive went bad) with the Evanescence shows.  Thabkfully, there are only about 15 Evanescence shows on the bad drive.  But I hate to lose them or any other data not yet backed up and I am keeping my fingers crossed the data can be transferred without any issues.  If so, I'll be uploading more Evanescence shows soon enough.

I hope you enjoy this show...

Evanescence: 2006-10-09 New York, NY (FLAC_AUD Master_1 CD)

Here is another Evanescence show recorded by the taper known as ALANiS.  I'm guessing, but may be wrong, that ALANiS is a girl.  One thing is for sure about this taper.  They like Evanescence and have some shows I really, really wish I could find in a lossless format!  Unfortunately; a lot of the Evanescence shows have been converted into lossy mp3's before I found them.  And seeing the details and specific information ALANiS puts in their lineage and posts, I seriously doubt they're the one ruining shows by converting them to mp3's!

Evanescence is a superb band and I love everything from the singer, Amy Lee, to the music and lyrics too.  Unfortunately, at this time they're not doing anything and Amy Lee did a solo release which I did not get.  It was sold via the web as an mp3 download only.  I will NEVER buy an mp3 release.  Had it been FLAC or another lossless format, I'd have gotten it.  I'm still steaming somewhat over that stupid stunt.  I hope the band gets back together, gets in the studio, and then gets back on the road soon because they really are great to see live and I've seen (and recorded) every Dallas show since twelve days after this one (10/21) when I first saw them.  And I'm ready for some more!

The waveform looks excellent for this show!  And that's another testament to the fact ALANiS is a knowledgeable taper.

The following is a copy & paste of ALANiS' notes in their post.  They're kind of funny I think:

"The opening of "Sweet Sacrifice" starts off a little rough, Amy's mic wasn't turned on for the opening lyrics and then the sound guy blasted her vocal, but quickly adjusted it. Also, near the end of "Going Under", two little hoes decided they wanted to stand directly in front of us. I got to the venue at 4pm to secure my front row balcony seat and they thought they could just get to the venue late, come to the front of the balcony railing, and stand in front of us. I don't think so. My friend had a confrontation with them and ended up getting a security guard to get them moved (during the ending of "Haunted" - You can hear the security guard telling them to return to their seat). Anyways, for the end of "Going Under" and the end of "Haunted" the sound is a little muffled because the hoes were blocking my line of sight to the speaker stacks. Other than that, pretty good recording overall with little to no audience rambling."

I hope you enjoy the show...

Unfortunately, the recording does suffer some from over-driven bass as do many recordings of Evanescence shows (including my first 2006 Evanescence show/recording).  I just turned down the sub-woofer on my system and it helps.  The audio isn't poor, but it isn't excellent either.  The audio is not over amplified or clipped as far as I can tell.  It's just a matter of the equipment recording it, the settings, and Evanescence's heavy bass.  Quieter songs sound much better than the heavier songs in this recording.

The band puts on a great show!  And Australia has always been a country where this band has earned a huge following too.  This is a very enjoyable show.

I hope you enjoy the concert!  Until next time...

Evanescence: 2009-11-04 New York, NY (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

This is an excellent and special show Evanescence did for 1000 lucky fans prior to their 2011 self-titled new release, Evanescence, that eventually made it out 11 months later.  The audio capture of this show is excellent and there is a song in the setlist that I've only heard on unreleased demo recordings.  This is a 2 CD show.  However; if you have software that allows you to overburn and your player will play those type of burns, you should be able to burn the show to 1 CD.  The show runs approximately 3 1/2 minutes over the standard 80 minute CD capacity.

I've pretty much left the file set just the same way I got it back in 2009.  I only created an md5 file, a TLH CDDA/MPEG test text file, and an information text file of my own.  And of course, I did check for lossiness indicators and SBE's too.  There really was no reason to redo what was properly done to begin with.

All thanks goes to "ALANiS" for recording and producing the show!  According to "ALANiS'" text file, they were recording from the "rear of the house" right next to the soundboard.

This was the first, new Evanescence show in a long time.  And it was still almost two year before the newly formed band released their new CD in October of 2011 and started touring again too.

This is a band I really, really like.  The singer, Amy Lee, has one of the most incredible female voices and the songs range from heavier rock to ballad like, slower tunes.  They are one of the most original bands I've heard in years and have been since they made it big in 2003.  Even though the band has changed members a lot through the years (each album at least), they still make amazingly great songs and play the old ones very well.  I only like a handful of new bands today because I feel most modern music has gone off the cliff and is terrible.  But not Evanescence!  They still rock and put on great shows and I've seen them every time (and recorded them too) they've come to my town since 2006.

If you're unfamiliar with the band, I recommend giving them a good listen.  And if you already know who they are and like their music, then you'll love this excellent recording of their secret 2009 show...

Evanescence: 1999-05-07 Little Rock, AR (AUD Shot DVD)

This is a very rare and different Evanescence show I found about five years ago.  It is a concert from their home venue, Vino's (a pizza joint), in Little Rock.  This was shot before the band had any idea they'd become famous (around 2002) and it isn't your regular Evanescence show.  I doubt anyone at the pizza place this night, 14 years and a week ago (I should've uploaded this on 5/7), was thinking "this band is going to be big".

The first ten minutes or so is the band having instrument/electrical issues with their sound.  And after that, it cleans up good.  But there is no bass player or drum player (I've heard they didn't show up but don't know if that is true) and the only two members I can see that were with the band when they hit it big a few years later are Ben Moody and Amy Lee.  And Ben Moody left the band, after making it big, in 2004.

It's also pretty cool to see Amy Lee with another female backup singer through the whole hour long show.  They play songs that made them famous a few years later as well as songs from their (never released but I have it) "Origins" CD that they'd give out for free after gigs.  The also play a B.O.C. cover tunes too.  This is a rare and cool video!

Now remember, the songs in this show are not individually tracked on this DVD. The piece of junk Roxio (NEVER BUY ROXIO SOFTWARE...IT IS FAULTY AND THEIR SUPPORT IS A JOKE) DVD building program I used to create this DVD years ago would not let me create chapters where I wanted them and kept crashing as I tried building a menu.  The option to create chapters where I wanted them was grayed out and I could never get any help or fixes from Roxio.  This is the second version of their software I've tried on a variety of PC's that was worthless (and about $200) and problem causing.

I've only seen this video one other time on a site last year.  I downloaded it and the quality was not as good as this video's quality.  There was a text file in that download that stated this is the earliest known video recording of Evanescence.  It also gave the names of most of the artists playing in this small venue show.  That is where I got the names listed above.

The band has changed members a few times through the years.  And as one might expect, it was due to disagreements, fighting, and that sort of stupid stuff.  But Amy Lee and her awesome voice has remained in Evanescence, and without her, the band would not be able to continue.  The problem with that is, I'm pretty sure she knows this!  Therefore; she's the queen bee in the hive and most likely gets her way since she is also the founding member still in the band.  But this hasn't been bad for the fans because they're still making excellent music, touring, and doing very well.

I hope you enjoy this "before they were stars" show...

I tried fixing a problem each track has but was unable to remove it.  It's nothing that ruins the recording though.  There is a pop at the beginning of each track.  Whoever created the original tracks most likely created the pops accidentally.  I did fix the sector boundary errors (SBE's) too.

Enjoy the show...

Evanescence: 2007-06-02 Nuremberg, Germany (Pro Shot DVD_Bootradr Remaster)

I built this DVD a few years ago because I didn't have a region free DVD player in the living room.  It was originally filmed in the European (mostly) 25 frames per second PAL format.  I converted it over to the NTSC (N & S America, Japan, etc) 29.97 frames per second format, built the menus, and did all of the other work needed so I could watch it on something besides my PC.  Today, I own a region free Blu-Ray/DVD player and have a PC connected via an HDMI cable to my sound system and HDTV.  It sure beats trying to build a DVD every time I want to watch a PAL formatted version of a show :-)

This is an excellent DVD and show!  I may upload the PAL version later because the builder of that DVD used better software with capabilities I didn't have at the time.  The PAL version has two separate audio streams.  To 99% of the people downloading this, you'd probably never know the difference if I hadn't mentioned it.  So it's nothing to worry about; that's for sure :-)  But me, being the highest quality perfectionist I try to be, I always like to stick with the best source available.  And that's why I bought a region free Blu_Ray/DVD player in order to enjoy the best source and not have to keep building DVDs and sometimes actually lowering the quality (i.e on an LPCM, Dolby 5.1, etc DVD) of a show.

I hope you enjoy the concert...

Evanescence: 2012-04-22 Frisco, TX (Bootradr Master AUD Shot DVD)

While Edgefest 22 (22nd year) in the D/FW metroplex had a terrible line up of bands this year, two bands stood out and I considered enjoyable.  All others were a total waste of time.  Evanescence and Garbage put on good shows, and as would be expected, their performances came at the end of the day/night.

There were a few issues with recording both bands.  The wind was blowing pretty good and I did not remember to bring my foam microphone guard to place over the Zoom H4n microphones.  So, at least on the Evanescence show, the Zoom H4n did not get a good recording.  I was also recording with a Zoom H2 and it did a much better job of not encountering the wind issue.  But it still had wind issues too (it wasn't exempt).  I used the Zoom H2 audio and synchronized it with this video for this Evanescence show being uploaded here.  Since the Sony camcorder's microphone never does a great job, and the better Zoom H4n had severe wind issues, I'm glad I had the backup Zoom H2 digital audio recorder!!!

Another issue with the whole Edgefest 22 event was the sound on the south stage.  This event was held in the FC Dallas Stadium/Pizza Hut Park Stadium venue.  Picture an outdoor American football stadium and you know what the venue looked like.  At the end of the Evanescence video I pan from the stage they were on (south) to the stage at the other end of the field (north) so viewers can get an idea of the setup.  Anyhow, the sound on the south stage was not good.  All day the bands on that stage sounded "muted" or just not mixed right from the soundboard.  I did EQ the Zoom H2 audio of Evanescence's show on the south stage before overdubbing the audio track to the DVD project.  It definitely needed the help.

So here's a rundown on the Evanescence show details, DVD details, and lineage details.

SHOW DETAILS:
Location: Frisco, Texas
Venue: FC Dallas Stadium/Pizza Hut Park Stadium
Event: Edgefest 22 (2012)
Date: April 22nd, 2012

DVD ATTRIBUTES:
Format: NTSC
Frames: 29.97 fps
Video Codec: MPEG-2
Aspect Ratio: 16:9 (Widescreen)
Video Bitrate: 9100 kbps average
Audio Codec: mpg2 (originally AC3 from camera but software only outputs mpg2)
Audio Bitrate: 224 kbps
Menus: Yes (audio used on menus is from Evanescence's March 2012 Offenbach show)
Chapters: Yes
WinRAR File Size: 2.77 GB total (6 zipped files)
Unzipped File Size: 3.02 GB total (DVD)

EQUIPMENT USED RECORDING SHOWS:
(1) Sony DCR-SR85 Handycam with Carl Zeiss lens
(2) Zoom H4n Digital Recorder (recorded @ 96 kHz 24 bit audio)
(3) Zoom H2 Digital Recorder (recorded @ 48 kHz 24 bit audio)

LINEAGE:
DVD audio track recorded on Zoom H2 digital audio recorder @ 48 kHz 24 bit, and then amplified with AVS Audio Editor by 4.4 db.  I then clipped the audio track to synchronize with the video and converted it to 44.1 kHz 16 bit audio (CD standard) using CD Wave Editor. I then EQ'ed and cleaned up the audio with Roxio 2010 Sound Editor.  After all of this, I used AVS Video Editor to overlay the Zoom H2 audio track and turn off the video's native audio track and then to create superimposed text at start of video.  I then then exported the video with the same format/attributes that it was recorded in using a Sony DCR-SR85 camcorder (except the AC3 audio output).  And finally, I opened the video in AVS DVD Author and created menus, chapters, etc. and rendered it to DVD.  After that, all that was left was to use Trader's Little Helper to create the md5 checksum file and then WinRAR to zip the non torrent upload files.

SETLIST:
01. What You Want
02. Going Under
03. The Other Side
04. Made Of Stone
05. My Heart Is Broken
06. My Immortal
07. The Change
08. Call Me When You're Sober
09. Imaginary
10. Bring Me To Life

NOTES: (1) I never use digital zoom (only optical) to avoid blurry or pixel related issues.  Nevertheless, there are still times, when zooming in, the video degrades in quality.  It frustrates the heck out of me, but what can you do?  (2) I had much higher hopes of this being an excellent audio/video recording.  But it isn't excellent.  It is very watchable, but due to issues described and software and equipment limitations, there are some frustrating imperfections in the final production.  I don't mean to discourage anyone from downloading or checking out the DVD.  I just don't want any false hopes either.  It's a good production, but it is not the excellent one as I had hoped for :-(  And last but not least (3), I am looking for better video and audio software to create better productions.  Simple things, like working with the Zoom H2's 48 kHz 24 bit audio in Roxio cannot be done.  It has to be converted to the CD standard 44.1 kHz 16 bit setting.  That's just plain stupid.  And not being to output the DVD's audio in AVS as the native AC3 audio is another issue I have with that software.  I'm not always happy with AVS' video rendering either.  But, even though the production may "look cool", you get what you pay for.  I HATE Roxio products and desperately want to upgrade from AVS video products (Roxio 2010 Pro's video production has never worked).  Short story lengthened, I'm saving, looking, and still learning the in's and out's of this passion/hobby I love so much.  And I'm striving for the best productions I can create.

With all of the above stuff just being said, don't skip downloading this show because you expect it to be horrible.  Believe me, that is not the case :-)

I guess after all of this yakking it's about time I add the links.

Evanescence: Compilation DVD 1 (2006-2007) (Pro Shot)

Here is the first compilation DVD of material I've recorded off-air (TV) relating to Evanescence. When I make compilation DVDs, I almost always include everything. No mater if it's big, small, complimenting, non-flattering, a commercial, or even mention being made of the artist in another program, if I see it I usually add it.

This first Evanescence compilation DVD (there is a second too...to be uploaded later most likely) almost never made it to (or off of) the DVD+/-RW. I recorded each of the items on the DVD using my first standalone DVD burner (Lite On LVW-5115GHC+) as a gift. It was (appreciated but...) “lite on” features we have in more modern standalone burners today. I was unable to create the chapters where I wanted them on this model burner. You learn to find ways to use what you got, and I did so with this project. I also learned that when you burn material to a re-writable disc from artists you like over time, you always take the most current copy and burn it to a PC! I almost lost all of this DVD+/-RW's content until Christmas 2010 when I got a new PC that read the DVD-RW I was saving the recordings too.

Some of these recordings were from HD broadcasts and some from standard definition broadcasts.

Note: on the last part of the DVD, just as “Good Enough” was about to end, the DVD had reached it's broken stage and became useless until December 2010 when it finally worked in the newer PC and let me copy it. “Good Enough” is slightly cut short at the very end of the DVD.

Remember, if you ever lose your only copy (backups recommended!!!) of a CD/DVD, don't ever trash it. You never know when another drive or device may be “good enough” or work on reading it.

Enjoy...
