Heart: 2013-08-15 Dallas, TX (FLAC_AUD Master_Bootradr Master_2 CD)

Well, even though I started working on this show over 24 hours ago, I still didn't get it uploaded on its 2nd anniversary yesterday.  I decided to make some artwork and that's something I haven't done in a long, long time.  But having taken a lot of photos at this show and having everything I needed to do make it, I had no excuse but to do it.

This was a great night in Dallas with John Bonham's band playing Led Zeppelin songs as the opening band and Heart ending it this night with a Led Zeppelin set and Bonham on the drums with them too.

I'll be uploading the John Bonham show too in the near future!

This recording came out well but it wasn't the full range of sound kind of "well" I'd hoped for.  I'd taken two digital recorders, a camcorder, and a camera also to get shots.  Needless to say; all of this was too much for a blind guy to control.  But my buddy, Digital_Journey, was there and he helped with some video and some photos too.  That was until the security guard came up behind us.

Less than halfway through the show you'll catch an audible "no video, right" or something similar being shouted a second time.  I honestly didn't hear the first time the security guy came up in the recording as I listened to the show all the way through for the first time today.  It was just as well that the security for the venue wouldn't let us use the video camera because the audio was very distorted due to microphone problems.  We learned after the show from the security guy that the reason he even said anything was because a woman a few rows behind us came to him twice reporting we were recording the show.  He said that nobody at the venue even cared about that stuff but when someone comes up and reports it, especially twice, they have to stop it.  They didn't make us stop taking photos or even notice the audio recorders probably.

The show came out sounding real clean and good as I listened to it after burning it to disc today.  I'm not sure what made the sound less than perfect though.  It may have been where we were in the venue or it may have been the sound coming from the stage?  It's definitely not bad at all.  I don't want to give that impression and I'll post some samples on Dime so others can hear before they download anything  and be sure they want it first.  I don't think anyone will regret getting it.  I've just heard better recordings of this tour and I really was hoping to get one of those myself.

Both Heart and Jason Bonham's band were really great and the night was very enjoyable.  There was no clipping in the waveform at the 96 kHz/24 bit WAV I recorded in.  But after down sampling to 44 kHz/16 bit WAV there is a tiny bit.  It's definitely nothing to worry about and really it isn't worth even mentioning.  You won't hear any distortion or breaking audio.  And the audience noise is low too in the recording.  I did not alter the audio in any way (no EQ'ing) other than what has been mentioned.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Heart: 1980-04-03 Fort Worth, TX (FLAC_SB/FM 2 Source Mix & Remaster_2 CD)

I've been busy lately as well as a little burned out and have skipped uploading a few Zeppelin birthday shows and uploading much of anything over the last week.  I had wanted to upload this show on its 35th anniversary but I didn't.  So here it is three days after its birthday.

This is a nice upgrade to the copy of this show I uploaded in the past.  This is the WMET FM master reel-to-reel taping and WAAF FM  master cassette taping merge of the two sources and it has also been remastered.  The sound is a lot sharper than either source's unaltered recording is (both of which I do have and compared).  The remastering and mixing of the two sources was posted by "gr19" on Dime so all thanks go to those involved in making this recording available.

I had originally thought the "KRW_Co" shared WMET FM master reel-to-reel copy was from the radio station's master reel.  So some of the information embedded in the audio tracks may be slightly incorrect if it states this.  I listened to this copy being uploaded all the way though on April 4th and realized that both recordings (or sources) are from off-air recordings of the two radio stations and I had been mistaken thinking one source was from the radio station's master reel.

This the full and complete audio from this Fort Worth 1980-04-03 concert too.

The fidelity of the primary, "KRW_Co" sourced, WMET FM audio recording is the better of the two sources.  The WAAF FM source was only used to patch missing parts of the show in a few short places.

This show was being broadcast live and worldwide as it happened back in 1980.  Heart puts on great show with their new lineup of band members as the opened their Bebe Le Strange tour.  I believe Ann Wilson says this is either the fourth or fifth show on the tour in the early interview track.

I first got this show myself back in the 1990's in a CD-R trade or from a local collector friend "Digital_Journey".  It was a great sounding show then I thought.  But the original source I had as well as the few others I have gotten over the years all fall short of this recording's sound.

There are some audio changes (besides the two sources sound differences) in the show and I am convinced they're part of the original FM broadcasted airing of this show in 1980.  So all copies have the sound changes I'm referring to.  In earlier copies, all copies of the show had a slight high pitch noise in the audio.  And in the pre-internet days when we traded shows and the generation of the copy might be a lot higher, this brought out the high pitch tone more I believe.  It wasn't a show stopper kind of noise but it was annoying nevertheless.  You can hear as track 1 starts up in this recording and the interview is taking place the high pitch noise I am referring too.  But it quickly disappears as the audio gets much better and the show starts up.

While searching for some facts or information on the show, I asked "whotapes" if he had any additional information since he was at this show in 1980.  He said the one thing that was different than other shows was the fact you had to buy your tickets at the Tarrant County Convention Center and that was the only way you could get them.  So there were no third party ticket vendors selling them and he said the lines outside at the Tarrant County Convention Center were very, very long.  I never asked him this, but I believe he may have been saying this was more or less a first come, first serve kind of ticket sales concert.  But I can't state that for sure.

So far, this is the best copy of the show I have heard out of the five or six copies I have obtained over the years.  I was able to turn it up loud and enjoy it Saturday; so I did!

I hope you enjoy the show too...

The waveform looks excellent in this recording with no audio clipping at all.  This is one of those perfect recordings that seem flawless.  There is also superb stereo separation in the recording as well.  This is definitely one of the best unreleased Heart recordings I've heard and may even be the best.  There is an occasional tinge of off air static heard but it is barely noticeable and not often.

The show is an excellent performance by the band too.  They cover a lot on tunes as well as do a backstage interview after the concert.  You won't regret getting this one!

I hope you enjoy this show..

Heart: 1976-XX-XX Pullman, WA - Washington State University (Pro Shot DVD)

This is the earliest video I know of that is of a complete Heart concert.  And it comes from a low generation VHS of the master reel and is professionally shot too.  The band was very new at this point and was really just starting out and was an unknown band still.  The actual date of the sow was reportedly February or March of 1976 and the first broadcast in the Pacific Northwest United States was on 1976-04-09.

This concert was at Washington State University.  It seems to be a bunch of college students in the audience and the school's radio/TV department did the recording of the show.  This is a really awesome and cool historical documentation of one of rock 'n' roll's best acts starting out.  And I think this is the only time I have seen (or heard) Heart not playing a Led Zeppelin song in their concert even tough you can hear and see the strong Zeppelin influence in Heart's performance here.  This is a true rarity!

There is another copy of this sow I had that has additional footage of Heart's 1977 and 1978 "Midnight Special" performances as well as their 1976 and 1977 Musik Laden songs.  I lost this DVD on a hard drive that failed and was not backed up yet.  But I hope I can get it again or even one day recover the data because the six extra tracks are really a great time capsule addition of this great band.

This is an excellent recording and one any Heart fan should enjoy having in their collection!

I hope you enjoy the show...

Heart: 1986-06-25 Tokyo, Japan (FLAC_SB/FM_1 CD)

This is a primarily excellent sounding Heart soundboard from 1986 in Japan according to the sharing party.  While this is not an easy show to find or even find information on, I do believe it is an FM radio broadcast likely.  In 1986, I don't imagine Heart's shows were only 65 minutes like this recording is.  While many FM broadcasts are full length concerts, there are also many that have a song or a few songs not in the broadcasted FM transmission.  In this recording there are some cuts after songs that sound like commercials that were removed possibly as well as a few more professionally done cuts done in the studio before the broadcast in between songs where a little more talking would have been.  I imagine their concerts were longer than 65 minutes if they were headlining which I think they were.  And finally, there is a Japanese lady announcing something in the second from last track indicating it was either an FM broadcast or maybe a Japanese TV broadcast this was sourced from.  She is talking over the band's return to stage after the encore (or is that the encore).  This may or may not be the full show?  I'm really not sure now and I'd need to look into it more.  But it really doesn't matter either way because this is what we have.

1986 was one of Heart's years they did not like as a band because the record company was trying to micro manage and force the girls to do and play what they thought the band should play.  Ann Wilson was being hounded by the label about her weight and the band was starting to write a lot less rocking songs and a lot more ballad type of songs.  It's not that they were not good songs.  It was just that their creative freedom was being taken away and they were very unhappy how the industry and label was treating and running them.

With all the above paragraph being said, they rocked out in this show.  It sounds a lot different than their 1986 American shows to me too.  Without doing more research into what they played in America, I really cannot say whether the setlist in Japan was different or not.  But they played a lot of the songs that had made them famous since 1976.  It was about a half and half setlist between old and newer songs at the time.  But they really were rocking out this night.

The only issue I have with theis recording is someone has clipped the audio.  Looking at the waveform, it was either over EQ'ed or over amplified.  I'd venture to say most listeners would not notice this because the audio isn't distorted.  But there parts in the the show I noticed that had some slight distortion or maybe a problem from a cassette tape transfer?  The recording has excellent sound and stereo speraration too.  I'm listening to "Bebe Le Strange" right now and the girls and it sounds incredible.

I made a second copy of this show using -12db in the  Compressor setting in Audacity.  But I'm going ahead and uploading the original copy because the compression is taking too much of the high frequencies away for my taste.  As "Even It Up" plays now, it starts off with the audio issue I was just referring to.  I can't tell if it is due to the audio clipping or not?  And it does not ruin the excellent recording.  It just makes it a little less perfect.

I've always loved Heart.  And any band that plays at least one Led Zeppelin tribute song, usually as good as Led Zeppelin did in the studio I might add, is awesome in my book!  These girls I've seen and recorded a number of times.  And every last time they were perfection in action on stage.  They have not lost the ability to hit the high notes or play the songs just like they did in their starting years.  And no matter whoever else they have on instruments through the years, they always pull off the classic heart sound without a hitch.  Plus the sisters have made some superb music and newer songs as they've progressed through the years too.  Maybe they aren't as well known as their older hits, but they are just as great sounding anyhow.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Heart: 1978-03-18 Los Angeles, CA (FLAC_SB_1 CD)

This is an excellent soundboard of the Heart show at the Californis Jam II (or Cal Jam II) 36 years ago today.  I got this Kodak Gold CD-R in a trade back around 1998 and dug it out this morning to do an EAC rip of the disc and upload it.  This was Heart's tour on their third LP that had been released, Dog & Butterfly, on the Portrait record label and the girls were in fine form for this show (as they always are).  It's a great concert.

Man, this is starting to tick me off as I rip many of my old days CD-R trade discs.  This one is testing lossy with TLH.  The fact that all tracks indicate the probability of an MPEG stream in the 95% range is is real good indicator this one will be lossy sourced.  I'm starting to realize many traders were not keeping their word back in the early days of CD-R trading by not using mp3 materials.  Any reputable trader would not send a lossy sourced disc to you claiming it's lossless!  I understand many people might not have known the difference since mp3's were fairly new back then.  But don't claim you do if you don't know.  Lossy mp3 audio was a "no-no" amongst most traders and that might explain why I'm having issues with so many of the discs I've been burning with EAC (primarily errors).  Between cheap media (discs) and lossy audio formats, it's a wonder any of these discs are still working (a lot aren't).  I apologize for this because until now I didn't ever realize this disc was lossy.  Otherwise, I'd have never bothered with burning it and uploading it oday!

Once again, Trader's Little Helper, while an excellent program for the many, many features and tools it has, is not very good at analyzing lossiness.  However, with the test results being this strong (see the TLH CDDA Test text file I included), I'd be willing to bet this one came from an MPEG lossy source!  People, please don't ruin your music by converting it to mp3 format unless you keep the lossless format for when you do share and trade it!  You may not realize it now, but one day you'll wish you hadn't depended on mp3 audio (like when you cannot listen to it anymore due to errors).

I hope you enjoy the concert!  Until next time...

Heart: 1976-10-10 Boston, MA (FLAC_AUD Master_1 CD)

This is a superb++ audience recording of Heart as they were pretty much starting their careers.  According to those who were there, Heart was not on the billing for the show.  They opened and then Jan Hammer's band played.  The headline artist was Jeff Beck.

This recording is amazing and it really sounds more like a soundboard than an audience recording.  The only time you hear any crowd is between songs, and even then, it sounds like a soundboard most of the time.  It can be hard to get a recording this good today even with newer (and supposedly better) digital recording equipment.  And the fact no EQ work was done to the recording makes me wish I had the gear Steve used in 1976 to record this show.  It sounds like it would make a great backup recorder, if not the primary recorder, of a show today!  And of course, Heart sounds as great as they always have and still do too.

NOTE: I left the original uploader's EAC log files in this upload so anyone interested can see the data.  The TLH MPEG test, not near as accurate as looking at the waveform, is a little sketchy looking in its results.  But the credibility of the person that recorded the show, as well as the more in depth Audacity waveform examination process to check for MPEG indicators, indicates this is a lossless recording.  TLH is not as accurate in its results of certain types of recordings.  But it is adequate and it is the fastest and most common way to check for MPEG indicators.  Plus; if it looks suspicious with the TLH results, then checking the waveform with Audacity is the more accurate step to take.  Since I'm still learning to read the waveform correctly, I'm taking Steve Hopkins' word for it as well as the music collecting community's consensus (and the TLH results too...see them if you wonder) this is NOT an MPEG sourced copy of the show.

Whether you know Heart's music or not, I recommend checking this show out because it was recorded so well.  I kept finding myself thinking it was a soundboard as I listened to it earlier today.  In fact, as I was just looking for any artwork on the web for this show I saw a few sites (with dead links) that were calling it a soundboard.  It looks like there is artwork somewhere out there for this show that has already been created.  But after 1 1/2 hours of browsing links, I only came up with a super low resolution, very basic front cover.

I'm constantly amazed at how great of a band Heart really is.  They had a mid-1980's era I wasn't particularly a fan of, and to hear them talk about it, neither were they.  As the music industry had it's horrible change with the advent of music videos, the industry was pushing the band to follow suit with what other bands were doing.  And Heart did for a short time.  They had some good songs still, but the rock 'n' roll was being taken out of their music too.  I'm glad the sisters decided to get back to their roots in the 1990's.  I've seen Heart (and recorded their shows) a number of times and I am amazed they can play a song today that sounds just like it did in the 1970's through 1990's.  I'm not just talking about having a band that can play the music right.  I mean these girls can sing and hit the notes like they did decades ago.  Sing child sing!

If you like Heart or just great rock 'n' roll, you should love this early, excellent show...

Heart: 1979-01-27 Boston, MA (FLAC_SB/FM_2 CD)

This is a superb Heart show that was broadcast live across 16 cities in America from Boston's WBCN FM in 1979.  This is an A+ quality show.  This is Heart's second sold out show from the same city/venue on this day and it was broadcast live (like they did in the days of radio).

This show is on fire as far as Heart's performance and the sound quality (great stereo separation and mix) goes.  I listened to this show yesterday for the first time even though I've had it for a few years.  I discovered it misplaced in a folder on a hard drive I was cleaning up.  It had been lost for a few years at least.

NOTE: I left the original uploader's info file intact and didn't add my own text file so that I could get this project started and upload it while I was gone.

I have the first show from this two show day too.  It's a Dan Lampinski master clone of his recording of the show that was not aired over the radio waves.  It is a very good recording too.  I may upload it here eventually.

Heart also played the Capitol Theater in Passaic, New Jersey the night before and that show was broadcast live too.  I've got that show and a number of 1976 - 1980 shows that were either broadcasted live or at a later date across the United States.  Heart obviously was a very radio friendly band and played a lot of live aired shows during these early years.

Give this show a listen.  It's incredible and you won't regret it...

Heart: 1980-04-03 Fort Worth, TX (FLAC_SB/FM_Master Reel_2 CD)

This show was played 33 years ago tonight in Fort Worth, Texas.  This is an excellent master reel-to-reel copy of the WMET FM Chicagobroadcast of the concert.  I've had a much lesser quality version of this show since the 1990's.  But this one, lost on a hard drive for a few years (my fault), sounds great.  The only thing keeping it from being superb sounding is a high pitch whine that can be heard if you're paying attention.  It becomes lost in the music as you start listening, but nevertheless; it is there.

LINEAGE:
WMET broadcast > reel-to-reel master > WAV > CD-R > EAC > FLAC > me > you

NOTE: I have kept the original uploader's EAC log files in this upload for those interested

Hopefully, there's other great sourced/sounding recordings of this show without the high pitch noise (not sure if it was FM radio or tape source noise captured) in it.  But either way, this is an enjoyable show from a night 34 years ago in the past...

Heart: 1982-05-28 Dortmund, Germany (Pro Shot DVD)

Here is a great Heart concert aired on the German TV program "RockPop" in 1982.  Heart must have been playing a German rock festival or something similar when this show was recorded.  I say this because I have a Joan Jett And The Blackhearts DVD from this same venue, on the same date, and aired on the same German TV program too.  I wonder if there might be any other good bands that might have played and were recorded too?

This was (I believe) the second time using the Zoom H2 digital recorder, and if I'd left the settings the same as I had them for our late arrival during Cheap Trick's last 5 songs, I think this would have easily been an A+ recording.  The recording is very good, but I think amplifying it by 12 db created a little (how do I describe this?) variation in the recording.  It doesn't ruin it at all, and it still sounds very good.  But sometimes the audio sounds more crisp and clear and others it sounds less crisp and clear. This could also possibly be from me having the Zoom H2 hanging around my neck, on my chest, while holding the microphone from source 2?  I really don't know.  But it's not a drastic, concert ruining type of thing at all.  If I hadn't mentioned it here, you might not have noticed :-)

I was also recording with Sony MD70 recorder with an external Sony ECM-917 microphone, so there is a second source I've yet to edit.  It's on a PC and a backup 2 TB drive, and sooner or later (as with many other shows I've recorded), I'll get around to putting it to CD.

Heart was spectacular and I loved the way the songs sounded right.  It wasn't like their 1985/1986 era shows that had totally different sounding guitar solos, etc.  They were "straight on" (so to speak) in this Dallas show (and the other shows we saw them at too).

I'd include the ticket scan, but it doesn't say "Heart" anywhere on it.  It just has "Journey".  I'll throw it in the torrent upload anyhow.  I also added some internet found, non copyrighted images taken by I don't know who from the show.  If anyone has the time to create any artwork, please do!

I hope those who check it out enjoy the show...
