Stevie Ray Vaughn: 1989-11-26 Austin, TX (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

This show was requested a while back and I'm finally getting to where I can upload it.  It is an excellent audience recording of a Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble show in Austin, Texas in 1989 and it is an upgrade to the previous copy of this show I have had for years.  It is more complete as well.

I wish I could find a record of where I got this recording, but unfortunately I can't.  So I'm not sure who to thank for it?  I do have a partial video of the show too with about 8 songs (some incomplete) if I am remembering right.  And that was shared by "No Pride" in the past so maybe this recording came from him too.  I just cannot say for sure because the original sharing party did not say who they were in their text file.

I'm not sure who was opening for who in this tour?  But Jeff Beck was also playing this night and he sits in on the last track, "Going Down", with the band and plays.  From the poster for the show (included) it looks like Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble were the headliners most likely.

The sound in this recording is really excellent and the waveform looks like there is no audio clipping also.  It has been months since I have listened to the show and many others have made me forget some of what I might have wanted to say about the sound when I first started trying to get the project together for uploading back then.  But I do remember it was a very enjoyable show and even had a soundboard type of sound to it.  I also remember the show is not truly "complete" in that there is a cut off before "Superstition" ends and then the next song begins.  I'm guessing it was a tape flip that caused that break in the show and is the end of the first disc.

The band sounds wonderful in the show and the crowd noise is not bad at all.  Especially when the music is playing.  You sometimes hear in low volume people talking as the show is ongoing but the excellent show makes up for those small infringements on it.

The mix is great with the high frequencies and low frequencies being there pretty evenly.  The bass is clean and the kind you can feel when the music is turned up too.  This is definitely a show any SRV fan should thoroughly enjoy in my opinion.  And it is the more complete copy of the show as I mentioned so there are no songs cut out like in other copies circulating.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Stevie Ray Vaughn: 1985-09-01 Seattle, WA (FLAC_SB_1 CD)

This Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble concert was 30 years ago today.  It was one of the performances at the Bumpershoot Arts Festival event in Seattle.  The festival may have been something put together by country artist Bonnie Raitt?  I'm not familiar with the details of the festival or who else played in the event.  This is an excellent soundboard recording from a third generation cassette source reportedly.

The waveform looks great with no audio clipping and plenty of room to spare for a remastering or EQ job if anyone felt so inclined.  It doesn't need any work because it sounds excellent already.  I'm just indicating that the waveform is nowhere near clipping and has a good amount of space to spare before it would reach a clipping point.  And working on audio like this is easier than working on audio that is already spiking high in a waveform.  There is very little to no hiss in the recording too.  I hear a little in "Life Without You" as Stevie does his talk about people not pushing each other down.  But as the music starts back it can no longer be heard.

The sound is excellent but it is not superb.  The mix sounds fairly even with good low frequency bass and good high frequency guitar and drum cymbals heard.  Stevie voice is a little lower than it should be but you'll have no problem hearing it and the audio in his vocals sounds like it increases too as the show goes along.  His guitar is also a little lower than I'd like to hear it, but once more, it isn't a problem and I'm just speaking of my preferences.  This is a very nice concert and the sound is not an issue at all.

As I was doing research and looking for cover artwork for this show, I came across some other copies that came from FM broadcasts of the show.  Whole I cannot say with any certainty this is not from an FM broadcast, I do not think it is.  There is no audible factors making me think it is from anything other than the soundboard as the original sharing party claims.  And I've listened to the full show too just as I was preparing this post.  And the audience or crowd noise hear between songs is very, very low unlike most FM broadcast recordings where it is usually much more prevalent in those recordings most times.  The Westwood One, Supergroups in Concert Series, etc programs usually turn up the audience microphones during the periods between songs to give it a more live sounding audio I've noticed and that is not the case here.  I definitely would bet on this one being just what it claims to be and that is a third generation cassette copy of the actual soundboard recording.

My research show Bonnie Raitt played with Stevie and the band on the last two tracks, "Texas Flood" and "Testify", but she doesn't seem to be singing from listening to the songs.  She is playing a steel guitar from the way it sounds.  I cannot tell if it is a pedal steel or just steel guitar.

Thanks goes to "Bonzo" for sharing this third generation copy if the soundboard!

I hope you enjoy the show...

Stevie Ray Baughn: 1987-02-01 San Antonio, TX (FLAC_SB/FM_2 CD)

This is an excellent sounding recording of the Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble concert in San Antonio in 1987.  It sounds like this was a live show being broadcast too from the initial FM radio station's talking in the first track.  This show was on the first leg of Stevie's Live Alive tour.

I said in my last SRV post I'd be uploading some more shows soon, and with some past requests for non specific SRV shows, this seems like a good time to do it.  I'm trying to get caught up on requests right now and have some future projects I need to work on and create some uploads of those requests too.  Since Led Zeppelin historically (and especially out of available shows) didn't seem to play very often on 3/23 it just seems like a great time to try and get caught up.

The waveform on this recording is excellent looking with no audio clipping and room to spare if someone wanted to work with the audio.  The mix is really great in this recording with up front guitar, clean bass you can feel, and nice high frequency drums (cymbals very clean) all balanced well.

This recording was shared on Dime earlier this year and the party that posted it stated it is at least 16 minutes longer than earlier versions of the show that had been shared.  So it sounds like a more complete broadcast which is always a plus.

I cannot give a full review on this show yet since I have only sampled it via the PC.  But I just burned it to disc and am putting it into the home theater system now.  If there is anything noteworthy that needs to be updated here, I'll do it after listening to the show.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Stevie Ray Vaughn: 1984-03-21 Copenhagen, Denmark (FLAC_AUD Master_2 CD)

Today is the 31st anniversary of this Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble concert that took place in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1984.  And the recording is an excellent and fabulous sounding capture of the show but not completely without some noise issues in the recording too.

I've been a big SRV fan for years but have not uploaded too many of his shows yet.  But I will start uploading more since there are so many and he sounds so great.  I've got many superb audio recordings as well as DVD's of SRV concerts and I know there are others who enjoy his music too.  So I'll get some up here soon.

Stevie Ray Vaughn introduces an instrumental song after the encore but I cannot tell what he says.  It sounds like he calls it "Blues For Myself" or something similar.  I looked all over the web for what it may be called.  But most of what I found were links to pages where they couldn't even spell the popular songs correctly!  So if you know what the song title is for track 205, please leave it in a comment.  He may have said it was a Jimi Hendrix song prior to calling it whatever he called it.  He mentioned Hendrix but I just haven't been able to tell what all he was saying.

The performance by Stevie and the band is an excellent one and the sound is excellent too in most of this recording.  There are some flaws here and there, and you can really notice them in the acoustic songs after the encore.  But from looking at the waveform and listening to the show, I think they're likely just tape degradation issues that are not too bad and definitely not lasting (or heard) in the majority of the music either.  The noise might even have been introduced in the tape transfer to digital format.  And then again, it may be slight distortion causing it even though the sound is heard in the quieter songs much, much easier.  It does sound like it might be some distortion too.  I was also thinking about the custom microphones mentioned in the original information and wondering if the microphones themselves might be the cause of the audio problem?  Who knows.  It's too bad because the capture, with the exception of the noise, is really excellent.

The sounds I'm referring to are the occasional crackling types of sounds or maybe even small pops.  But don't let this discourage you from getting the show because they are not bad, they're sporadic and not usually heard, and the show sounds excellent and makes it easy to overlook flaws like these in most parts of the show.

I know this will ruin it for some people, and for others, it won't make any difference.  That's one reason I hesitate to give any references to a show's sound many times.  And it's also why I I do give references to the sound and ratings too (even though they are always subjective as I state in my sticky notes).  But talking about a recording's sound is also what I like to do and giving a mini review is part of sharing a show in my book.

I've been listening to this show as I did some research on it and was looking for some artwork (I couldn't find any) for it.  And I will be burning it to CD-R's after I upload it and listening later today when I can turn it up a little and really "hear" it like it should be heard.  The noise does become more of an issue near the end as I mentioned already.  After the encore it is more easily heard.  But it doesn't change the clarity and excellent sound captured in the show being heard throughout it too.  I really like the capture the taper, whoever they are, got of this show 31 years ago.  And yes, I do wish it was without the noise flaws because they will play havoc at some points in the show when listening to the show through a good sound system and turned up I imagine.  You'll constantly be wondering if your speakers are blown if you don't read this first.  But that's just part of the live shows game you have to play in order to enjoy the rare recordings too :-)

I hope you enjoy the show...

I have left the file set "as is" in this upload because it was done right.  The songs are all titled, the file fingerprint was created, and so was the md5 checksum file.  The info file has relevant information and the original sharer fixed any sector boundary errors (SBE's) before they shared this recording.  I double checked the SBE's and there were none found thus indicating it was done correctly.  I also checked to make sure there were no lossiness properties in the audio files and they came back with 100% CDDA probability (meaning they were never converted to a lossy format such as an mp3).  All original files tested with no errors in Trader's Little Helper (TLH) too.

I always enjoy hearing studio jams and outtakes from artists.  Whether it be a new or never released song, or many times just the chat and variations in the songs compared to their original releases, it is interesting to hear these sessions as they played out.

Stevie Ray Vaughn was a very talented artist and played from the soul with his blues jams.  I hate to hear people compare him to Jimi Hendrix because they were two different people and had two different styles.  Many people throughout the years have said SRV was just copying Hendrix, but that isn't the case at all.  He admired and loved Hendrix's  music, so like any other normal person, he played some of the songs he liked.  And he did it very well.  But he did it with his own style and was not a Hendrix cover band!

SRV's music, and especially the earlier era to me, has always been very enjoyable because he was so very talented.  He was an awesome blues guitarist that played and sang what he felt.  And he felt the same way many people do and that's why his music was loved by so many people even after his death in a helicopter crash on August 27th, 1990.  But his music lives on through collectors and fans like us and it will continue to do so for a long, long time!

Until next upload...

I'm not completely sure why "Look At Little Sister" was played twice?  It sounds like, from a comment made by SRV on CD 2, there was another show to follow in 2 hours.  It's just a guess, but maybe the second version was from the second show and it was added to make CD 2 more complete.  I don't know?
