Kiss: 1974-04-01 Cleveland, OH (FLAC_SB/FM BX_1 CD)

Here is an excellent recording of a Kiss concert from Cleveland that was broadcast by WMMS FM in 1974.  I'm not sure if it was live or pre-recorded.  But either way, it was recorded on tape from the FM radio broadcast and it is extremely clean and excellent sounding too.

I've had some early 1973/1974 Kiss requested and that is why I am uploading it a few days prior to its 41st anniversary.  It's only four days early anyhow.

This recording is not what you expect.  I can say that because we all expect a 1974 recorded FM broadcast to sound sub-par even if it still sounds excellent to us.  But this is not the case here and the sound may be closer to superb than excellent in my rating of it.

This is reported as the first known Kiss FM broadcast.  And I just got this show late last year too and there are a lot of huge Kiss collectors who know more than I ever will that agreed.  Plus, the sharing party , (someone I cannot thank because I cannot determine who it may be) states in their original information that this was discovered through their YouTube "KISS8mmfilms" page.

What strikes me as incredible is how sharp and clean the highs are in this recording too.  It sounds like it should be an official release almost.  The mix is great in the broadcast and everyone in the band can be heard very cleanly as they sing and play instruments.

I don't know if this is the full show or not?  It makes sense it very well may be because Kiss was still pretty new in 1974 and they may (or may not) have been an opening band at the time.  But they obviously were getting enough recognition to have been broadcasted over the radio.

It is kind of funny hearing Paul Stanley say at one point in "100,000 Years", and  as he is trying to get the crowd to clap their hands, "Come on, don't tell me you may not be clapping because your friends think it's not cool.  Why don't you people just loosen up a little bit."

After doing a little internet research, I found another posting of this recording and found some artwork as well.  I'm not 100% sure this copy I am uploading is the Zodiac label copy.  But since everything matches, I'm adding that artwork too.  Also, the information in the other posting of the show says this is the full, eight song set too.  So it is the full performance after all which is always a good thing.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Queen: 1976-01-30 Boston, MA (FLAC_AUD Master_2 CD)

This a show that has been requested and I am finally getting some time to upload it early this morning.  It's an excellent-to-superb recording by Dan Lampinski of a Queen show in Boston in 1976.

This is the speed corrected copy of the show.  The original copy shared ran a little fast and another Queen fan fixed the error.  I don't believe any other alterations have been done to the audio as in equalizing it.  There is no mention of any EQ work and just the speed correction, re-tracking the songs, and renaming tracks by the party that did the work.  In fact. I'm sure no EQ'ing was done when I look closer at the lineage and compare this copy with the original one shared by Lampinski.

"I had to share this it's fabulous. From a tape recorded by Dan Lampinski and recently shared at Dime by Carl Morstadt I just made it run at the right speed as it was too fast. Download this, I guarantee you'll love it - unless you hate Queen, in which case, why are you reading this? The sound quality is phenomenal for a 1976 audience recording rich bass, clear treble, stereo separation and all and it's a heck of a gig. Everybody's on top of their game.  I made some artwork as well.

Thanks goes to Dan Lampinski for sharing his recording (one of many) and to "Thomasbirch" for fixing the speed and also making some improved (in my opinion) artwork!

The artwork created by "Thomasbirch" and the original artwork are both in the artwork folder.  I like the "Thomasbirch" artwork better cosmetically as well as in completeness too.  He created a booklet too as part of his artwork project that looks nice.

As for the audio, it really is an excellent-to-superb sounding recording Lampinski got of this show and one most Queen fans will surely enjoy.  The stereo separation is great in this show too.  Everyone in the band can be heard equally and the crowd noise is very low with an occasional comment from the audience heard or some clapping.  And most times, that is heard between songs when it is heard.

This is a much better recording than Lampinski's 1974 Queen show he recorded (I think it was also on January 30th too) two years earlier.  What makes this show so enjoyable to me is the clarity and cleanness of the audio.  The bass is full and the highs are crisp, sharp, and very clean.  You get the full range of sound in this show and it's almost as if you were sitting in the front watching the concert as you listen.  Lampinski recorded an historic winner with this one for sure!

I hope you enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1973-03-27 Nancy, France (FLAC_AUD Master_2 CD)

Today, or at least as I start this post, is the 42nd anniversary of this Nancy, France Led Zeppelin show in 1973.  This recording is actually a lot better than I had originally thought too.  I'd rate it a great sounding recording especially considering it was recorded from the audience in 1973.

The vocals on Plant are very easily heard, the drums are heavy as is the bass with little distortion, and Page's guitar can be heard well too.  I'm guessing the taper likely started out the show on the side of the crowd which was closer to John Paul Jones' side of the venue.  Page's guitar is a little quieter than the bass and that is not normally the case in the mixes.  And the keyboards JPJ plays are also very up front indicating the taper was probably on his side in the crowd.  But as the show continues I wonder if the taper moved more towards Jimmy Pages side of the venue?

The recording sounds very good and everybody can be heard playing and singing too.  The sound does change a few times in the show however and the audio isn't as good as it started outsounding.  Around "The Song Remains The Same", it seems the sound starts alternating more.  It sounds almost like the taper is trying to hide or forgets about the microphone.  All that glitters is definitely not gold in the recording, but it still sounds nice and enjoyable too.  And distortion is not an issue which really jumps my rating up to great.  It's definitely not an excellent or superb sounding recording, but it also isn't a good or poor sounding/rated one either.

This is the "dadgad" shared master audience audio.  It recently surfaced too and this is the first copy of this show I have ever uploaded.  I don't know if "dadgad" did any EQ work on the show's audio or not, but I don't see any mention of any being done.  Still, it sounds different that some other copies I have of the show (that likely have been EQ'ed) and it really sounds cleaner and with far less distortion that some label copies sound.

The taper seems to turn down the record level too during "Over The Hills and Far Away" making the recording a more clean and level audio source that it initially starts out as.  The distortion, even though small and not too bad, is removed and the recording is not slightly overloaded sounding.  I'm listening to "Since I've Been Loving You" now and it sounds very nice.  There are parts of the show sounding worse and better than other parts but it is a nice recording overall to add to your collection.

The second half of the show is the more muffled sounding audio and the first half of it is brighter sounding I'd say.

The taper or someone near them does some chatting and singing along with songs in some parts of the show.  But it isn't anything show stopping or as horrible as the stoner taper Artie and his friends in the New York Led Zeppelin recordings are.  And there really is very little audience heard throughout the whole show.

This is not the complete show unfortunately, but it is definitely most of it and the songs sound like complete recordings too in most cases.  There are some songs cut a little short or that have small portions cut in the middle but the taper seems to keep the tape rolling as he records without a lot of stopping or pausing of the recorder.  I do hate that the "Stairway to heaven" solo is cut short ending the song before it is finished.  This is an enjoyable recording to me though!

I hope you enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1975-03-27 Inglewood, CA (FLAC_AUD 1st Gen & Unkn Source_3 CD) # 2

Today is the 40th anniversary of this Inglewood, California Led Zeppelin show recorded by the late Mike Millard and another unknown source used to patch missing audio in Millard's recording.  It is an excellent-to-superb sounding recording too as far as Millard's audio is concerned and good as far as the short, patched audio is concerned.

This recording being uploaded was Led Zeppelin's third and last show they played at The Forum between March 24th and March 27th in 1975.  And this was also Led Zeppelin's final American shows before returning home, taking a two month break, and then playing five nights at Earl's Court in London in 1975 ending the Physical Graffiti tour.

I'm not sure who made this production.  It seems like it is a lot like the Winston Remasters two sources copy I uploaded last year, but it is not Winston Remasters production.  The sources are likely the same and I wonder if someone took Winston Remasters work and made some changes to it.  And to be honest, this may sound slightly better than the Winston Remasters copy too?  This is  especially true in the high end frequencies and clarity of the sound I was noticing as I sampled the recording and compared it to the Winston Remasters copy I have since deleted off of the hard drive (it's backed up on other drives not connected now).

I really wish there was more information on who made this production and more information letting us know if it is sourced from (or an exact copy of) the Winston Remasters production.  But there is not any information telling us any of these details.

As I mentioned, this copy sounds a tad bit better as I was listening through the PC Bose speakers.  But there is no mention of any audio alterations or remastering either in the original text file.  The biggest and easiest to see changes between this copy and the Winston Remasters copy is the track "The Crunge" has been removed (track 305) and just left in the song "Whole Lotta Love".  It is part of the "Whole Lotta Love" medley anyhow.  And there is artwork made for this copy too.  And one last thing that differs between the two copies before I did my preparation on them is they were different file sizes.  That can be from something simple as a different FLAC level when encoding of course, but it does show this is not the exact Winston Remasters share (which likely never had and SHN audio codec lineage in it either).

I've got the Winston Remasters copy of the show playing through the home theater system right now and it sounds superb.  So worst case scenario; this is another copy of those discs.  And the best case scenario is this is a slight upgrade to the Winston Remasters copy.

I asked over on R-O if anyone could help clear up these questions I have but that was not long ago and nobody has answered yet.  But if I get an answer, I'll update this post (won't be in the text file however) and let everyone know what the story is (if anyone really knows).

One last thing worth mentioning is the original text file for this copy being uploaded does have a note that this title and recording has "no label".  And while that really isn't telling us much, it may mean this is a separate project someone did and is not the Winston Remasters label copy.

I plan on listening to this copy tonight as I catch up on some work and compare it to the Winston Remasters copy I am listening to right now.  I'll also check the running times/length of both copies and see if they're identical or not when I hook up the drives and can access the two copies side by side (tonight).

I hope you enjoy this recording on its 40th anniversary because there are no more 40th anniversary dates left until two more months.  It two months it will be when Led Zeppelin closes out the tour in Earl's Court in London for their final five shows in the 1975 Physical Graffiti tour...

Led Zeppelin: 1973-03-26 Lyon, France (FLAC_AUD 1st Gen_3 CD)

Today is the 42nd anniversary of this recently surfaced Led Zeppelin recording.  Parts of the show have been around for a while, but the almost complete recording just surfaced two years ago today and was uncirculated prior to that.

In past years, part of "Dazed and Confused", "Whole Lotta Love", and "Heartbreaker" was all we had.  And I believe it came from a completely different source too.  The sound in the partial, short audio of the show we had prior to two years ago is a different sounding audio altogether.

Unfortunately, this show is incomplete and it only sounds good in my rating opinion too.  I mentioned this in the Denver 1970 post I last made as well as past posts.  If you are interested in seeing how I define the sound and overall quality of a show, then look at the sticky note link above the band names as you scroll down and look on the right side of the site.  It can be found here: STICKY NOTE - CONTACT ME & USEFUL INFO FOR SITE.

This more complete recording is a 3 CD copy of the show even though it is not the complete show.  It seems "Rock and Roll" was not saved or recorded as one example.  This almost fits on 2 CD-R's, and time-wise, it is under 2 CD in length.  But there is no way to get the full recording onto two discs due to the song lengths making one disc just over 81 minutes and the other disc just over 83 minutes when you try burning it to two discs.  And of course, CD-R's can only hold 80 minutes unless you over-burn a disc and that is not usually recommended (and in my case doesn't seem to work when I've tried in the past).  "Dazed and Confused" is really the song that the change in discs would be at and there was no way it could fit on either CD 1 or CD 2 without running over 80 minutes.  So I put "Dazed and Confused", which runs just over 30 minutes in length, on CD 2 by itself and everything prior to that is on CD 1 as well as everything post that song is on CD 3.

There is an interesting difference in this show too not heard in any other 1973 shows I can recall.  As part of the "Whole Lotta Love" medley, the band plays an almost 10 minute "I Can't Quit You Baby" with "The Lemon Song" in the mid section of the song.  Unlike most shows, where just a small fragment of a song is added in the medley, they play the two songs at length.

The original sharing party I got the show from two years ago had the "Whole Lotta Love" medley's audio broken up into three tracks.  And I left it that same way since "I Can't Quit You Baby" and "The Lemon Song" are so long in this show.

Thanks goes to "unclemeat" for sharing this uncirculated copy of the concert with us two years ago!

I hope you enjoy the show...

Personally, I've only heard this show once before and that was long ago.  I really need to listen again just to refresh my memory of it.  It is not the best of recordings but it is not the worst either.

The recording sounds a lot like the TDOLZ copy does as I sample "Dazed and Confused".  It actually is sounding identical.  I'm not saying it is identical though.  But it is possibly TDOLZ put to CD the Presence shared copy or it is possible they just uploaded the master copy with no EQ or alterations made to the audio too.  I really don't know?

I'm not writing a review of the show since I haven't heard it in so long and I want to get it uploaded quickly.  If I hear anything worth updating this post over next time I listen to it, I'll post an update here.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1975-03-25 Inglewood, CA (FLAC_AUD Source 1, 1st Gen_3 CD)

PREFACE:
I uploaded this show a year og, but at the time I had not done any metadata embedding of the tracks and added information put into them.  I didn't do any of the normal things I do when organizing and uploading the show. and uploaded it "as is" due to time constraints a year ago.

Today's 40th anniversary upload of the show contains the extras.  It doesn't change the audio one bit, but it puts things in order with how I like to have it once I'm done and it can be more helpful to some people that actually use the extras done on show uploads I make nowadays but didn't start out years ago knowing about.

The original upload I'll leave here unless the links go bad.  In fact, I re-uploaded link 3 this morning because it was not working.  But this file set is a 2 link download today since my file sharing site now allows larger file sizes in the downloads for free downloaders.  Last year I believe 400 MB was the maximum file size a free downloader was able to get and today I believe it is 1 GB.

--------------------------------------------------

Today is the 40th anniversary of this Inglewood, California Led Zeppelin show recorded by the late Mike Millard.  It is a superb sounding recording by one of the Led Zeppelin audience taper masters.

This recording being uploaded was Led Zeppelin's night out of the three nights they played at The Forum between March 24th and March 27th in 1975.  And the three shows were also Led Zeppelins final American shows before returning home, taking a two month break, and playing five nights at Earl's Court in London in 1975 ending the Physical Graffiti tour.

I'm uploading the 44.1 kHz/16 bit (CD standard) audio rather than the 96 kHz/24 bit higher audio quality audio today.  Since most people I have talked with as a result of this site indicate they burn their shows to disc (as do I), then the copy I'd like to make a DVD-A project out of, or the 96/24 copy, is not as useful to the downloaders as a copy ready to burn to disc is.

Many people may wonder what an "unmarked" tape or audience recording is.  All that means is the recording has not had any cuts, sound adjustments, or modifications to the original audio.  In the case with Mike Millard's recordings, he marked his tapes he sahred and kept a notebook of details when he marked and shared a tape.  That way, he could tell easier where any bootleg label got their tapes from if they used his recordings.  He strongly hated the bootleg companies making money off of taper's recordings by pressing LP's and selling them.

Millard would make small changes such as cutting a part of a song out, adjusting or altering  the audio so could identify the source he gave it to when he listened to the audio playback, and who knows how else he may have done things like this to keep track.

Even though the reasoning for Millard doing these recording alterations before he shared them may or may not be understood by many, it really seems like it would have been ineffective in the big picture to me.  If he shared a tape with someone and then they shared it with ten people, all Mike would have been able to tell was who the original tape came from and he would still not know how it ever actually made it into bootleg company hands.  But maybe that's all he wanted to know?  And who knows, he might have had strict rules of sharing his tapes too and told people not to reshare them?  If the latter is the case, it would still come back on whoever passed the marked tape along to begin with.

I don't know what all Mike Millard did and I won't pretend to.  But having copies of his tapes today that are unmarked is a big deal and really a pleasure too.  These tapes, like this one being uploaded now, were not even out there for us to listen to until May of 2010 when JEMS transferred the unmarked tapes and they were shared.

A huge thank you goes out to the late Mike Millard and to JEMS for helping the Millard unmarked tapes (this is just one show) see the light of day!

I believe this specific 1975-03-25 Millard recording of this show is one of his best sounding works.  The show is incredible and really sounds like a sounboard through a lot of it.  He captured a perfect, awesome sounding copy of Led Zeppelin 40 years ago today and it still amazes me that we can listen to it four decades later and enjoy it in high quality like this.

I hope you enjoy this recording on its 40th anniversary because there are only two 40th anniversary dates left until two more months...
