The Firm: 1985-03-21 Houston, TX (FLAC_SB_1 CD)

This is a great-to-excellent sounding The Firm recording of a show I was at 30 years ago today.  This was my first out of two The Firm concerts I saw in Houston with the second show being on 1986-05-2X (I'd have to look and see what the date was).

I really believe this is a monitor feed rather than a true soundboard recording.  But it has been shared and circulated as a soundboard, so I'll leave it that way.  The crowd in the Houston Summit can barely even be heard in between songs and that is another reason I question if this may be a monitor feed.

A special thank you goes to "Datfly" for making this recording available to us!

The sound in this recording is very clean but it also sounds like the high end frequencies have either been cut a little or compressed.  It in no way sounds bad and the mix is really good too.  Jimmy Page's guitar playing is really clean and up front as well as Paul Rodgers vocals.

This is not the complete show and is a little over an hour of the audio from it.  I'm really glad songs like "Money Can't Buy" and "Live in Peace" made the cut though because I like the Page solos in those songs (and others).

I hope you enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1970-03-21 Vancouver, BC, Canada (FLAC_SB_1 CD)

Today is the 45th anniversary of this famous Led Zeppelin show commonly referred to as "Mudslide" by many.  I'm not sure if this exact copy is one of the SB/FM broadcast versions of it or if it is actually from a soundboard.  But I do think it (and maybe all copies) comes from an FM broadcasted capture.

"Pernod" mentions in some notes that no real lineage for this show is truly known.  He also says that it is probably an edited radio broadcast source too.  And that would make sense with the cuts in between songs and shortness of the whole recording too.  This was also likely the early days of an FM radio broadcast of a concert (probably pre recorded) I'd imagine.

The sound is excellent in this recording but I have to give it a great-to-excellent rating because in some songs the mix is not as good and things such as Jimmy Pages guitar aren't turned up in the mix like they should be.  And there are sharp cuts between some songs too.  The show is obviously incomplete and "Whole Lotta Love" is cut very short too.

I'm uploading the "pernod Revised" copy of Flying Discs Mudslide.  He corrected the speed in the recording.  He also mentions he did some light cleaning up of the audio too.  From the large number of copies I have listened to trying to decide which I thought sounded best for this show's first upload here, this copy was definitely it.

One thing I noticed is this.  On most copies of this show, "Whole Lotta Love" is the last song with "Communication Breakdown" being before it.  But in this copy you can see that is not the case.  Led Zeppelin would have ended with "Communication Breakdown" after "Whole Lotta Love" most likely too.

One great thing to make note of is that even though this was originally sourced from the Mudslide LP, you can hardly even tell.  This album was in excellent shape and you only notice a small crackle from the LP very, very rarely.

My biggest complaint would be that the mix wasn't all that great.  Like I mentioned, Page's guitar was not loud enough on some songs.  And the sound is better in some songs than others too.  It is very cool to have an excellent sounding copy of "We're Gonna Grove" from the show though since that song is more of a rare track not played as often in the recordings we have of Led Zeppelin.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Stevie Ray Vaughn: 1984-03-21 Copenhagen, Denmark (FLAC_AUD Master_2 CD)

Today is the 31st anniversary of this Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble concert that took place in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1984.  And the recording is an excellent and fabulous sounding capture of the show but not completely without some noise issues in the recording too.

I've been a big SRV fan for years but have not uploaded too many of his shows yet.  But I will start uploading more since there are so many and he sounds so great.  I've got many superb audio recordings as well as DVD's of SRV concerts and I know there are others who enjoy his music too.  So I'll get some up here soon.

Stevie Ray Vaughn introduces an instrumental song after the encore but I cannot tell what he says.  It sounds like he calls it "Blues For Myself" or something similar.  I looked all over the web for what it may be called.  But most of what I found were links to pages where they couldn't even spell the popular songs correctly!  So if you know what the song title is for track 205, please leave it in a comment.  He may have said it was a Jimi Hendrix song prior to calling it whatever he called it.  He mentioned Hendrix but I just haven't been able to tell what all he was saying.

The performance by Stevie and the band is an excellent one and the sound is excellent too in most of this recording.  There are some flaws here and there, and you can really notice them in the acoustic songs after the encore.  But from looking at the waveform and listening to the show, I think they're likely just tape degradation issues that are not too bad and definitely not lasting (or heard) in the majority of the music either.  The noise might even have been introduced in the tape transfer to digital format.  And then again, it may be slight distortion causing it even though the sound is heard in the quieter songs much, much easier.  It does sound like it might be some distortion too.  I was also thinking about the custom microphones mentioned in the original information and wondering if the microphones themselves might be the cause of the audio problem?  Who knows.  It's too bad because the capture, with the exception of the noise, is really excellent.

The sounds I'm referring to are the occasional crackling types of sounds or maybe even small pops.  But don't let this discourage you from getting the show because they are not bad, they're sporadic and not usually heard, and the show sounds excellent and makes it easy to overlook flaws like these in most parts of the show.

I know this will ruin it for some people, and for others, it won't make any difference.  That's one reason I hesitate to give any references to a show's sound many times.  And it's also why I I do give references to the sound and ratings too (even though they are always subjective as I state in my sticky notes).  But talking about a recording's sound is also what I like to do and giving a mini review is part of sharing a show in my book.

I've been listening to this show as I did some research on it and was looking for some artwork (I couldn't find any) for it.  And I will be burning it to CD-R's after I upload it and listening later today when I can turn it up a little and really "hear" it like it should be heard.  The noise does become more of an issue near the end as I mentioned already.  After the encore it is more easily heard.  But it doesn't change the clarity and excellent sound captured in the show being heard throughout it too.  I really like the capture the taper, whoever they are, got of this show 31 years ago.  And yes, I do wish it was without the noise flaws because they will play havoc at some points in the show when listening to the show through a good sound system and turned up I imagine.  You'll constantly be wondering if your speakers are blown if you don't read this first.  But that's just part of the live shows game you have to play in order to enjoy the rare recordings too :-)

I hope you enjoy the show...

Jimi Hendrix: 1968-03-19 Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (FLAC_SB 1st Gen_1 CD)

Here is an superb recording of the second set of Jimi Hendrix's Ottawa show that occurred 47 years ago today.  I had only had an mp3 copy of this show, and not this upgrade either, for the longest time and now I finally have a copy (as of today) that I can actually burn to disc!

A very special thanks goes to my buddy Dave for this one!  He had it and sent it over to me earlier today.  Plus, he helped me clear up some Hendrix questions I've had as well as some  matters (even related to this CD) on what was officially released and what was not.

There were three officially released tracks (not in this copy) from the first set Hendrix played on this same day in some earlier copies of the show that had circulated like the "Ottawa 1968" second generation copy I had an mp3 of (and has since been deleted finally).  And this copy is also an upgrade to many other copies circulating still.  It is a first generation (as opposed to the more common second generation) copy!

Hendrix shows can be very confusing and so can many of the labels they appear on.  But this first generation copy is not an official release and it sounds excellent.  I'm trying to listen as I prepare this post and I'm loving it!

There are some issues that are common with many Hendrix (and all artists for that matter) shows out there.  There is some distortion in the low frequencies as the show starts out but the show gets remixed by the sound man (I assume) and cleans up very nicely.  Hendrix even stops for a second between the first two songs and mentions they're having some equipment problems.  And after that, wow!  The sound improves a lot.

One thing I like too is that there is some hiss indicating the high frequencies have not been cut or had any compression used in this recording.  The waveform looks perfect too with no audio clipping.  In order to remove hiss, many people will cut the high frequencies out and that does not appear to have happened here at all.  The hiss is not bad either and is really only heard in quieter moments.

The last track, "Wild Thing", is cut short.  But earlier versions of the show apparently didn't have any of the song on them from what I was able to tell.  Hendrix's guitar is up front too and I love that in rock guitarist oriented recordings.  And the bass is clean and very nice sounding as well.  There is an excellent mix in this recording and as I already stated, I love it!

I better hurry and post this show if I want it o be uploaded on its 47th birthday today.  I know you'll enjoy it if you are a Hendrix fan and do not have it (or maybe if you do have "it" but not this copy) :-)

Well, shoot!  It looks like we're 47 years and a day and the upload is finally finishing.  Oh well, I tried!

I hope you enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1975-03-19 Vancouver, BC (FLAC_SB/AUD 3 Sources Matrix_3 CD)

Tonight is the 40th anniversary of this concert in Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum.  And this is a three source matrix that uses the EVSD Snow Jobs soundboard, the EVSD Snow Jobs bonus audience discs, and a 1st generation audience recordings for the matrix job.

As I sampled this show I was thinking it sounded very nice.  But now that I am 75% into preparing it, I'm hearing the flaws in it too.  It still sounds nice but it also has some rough cuts and some synchronizing of the three sources issues that result in an echo effect in some parts of the show.  And that bums me out.

I'm going ahead and uploading it anyhow since I've passed the halfway point.  I decided to upload a matrix copy since I've uploaded a soundboard in the past and didn't want to just upload another soundboard copy.  But if you want a better sounding recording, find the 1975-03-19 soundboard I uploaded in the past or wait for me to upload an audience or another soundboard recording of this show.

Doing a matrix is not an easy task and especially when you're adding a third source.  Besides having to sue the best source, in this case the soundboard, as the base or primary audio source and then build and synchronize from that, it can get difficult.  And the slightest out of sync audio can start resulting in an echo or reverberation sound and that is what we have in various parts of this show.  It is still an enjoyable listen when it is either synchronized correctly or maybe one source is being used.  But it just isn't a good job on the project like I was expecting or thought it would be from the samples I did of a few songs (like "Trampled Underfoot") that were synchronized I guess.

It is always nice to have the extra talk and music that many times gets cut from the straight soundboard recordings.  It fills in the gaps.  But the echo is horrible in many parts of the matrix job and the transitions between the source changes are very rough cuts and not smooth at all.

This recording has too many drastic sound changes to listen to it in a smooth and enjoyable sit down.  And I think the EQ work likely done on it (but not mentioned) also changes throughout the show and that is not something you want to change up unless it is really needed due to drastic changes in the source audio (which this show does not have).

The audio is clipped as well when looking at the waveform.  I appreciate the job attempted on this recording, but I wish I'd listened more before starting the long preparation process of uploading it.  If I had, I would have uploaded either another label's soundboard, a fan remaster of the soundboard, or a straight audience copy instead.

I am actually very surprised the guys who did this work let it out without fixing the problems in it.  The timing is so far off a deaf man could hear it.  And these guys have done some great upgrades to other shows too in the past such as the 1973-05-13 Mobile, Alabama show project they created.  This is a very disappointing and sloppy release I have to say if I am going to be honest here.

I hope you enjoy this recording on its 40th anniversary regardless of its bad review here if you do get it...

Journey: 1976-03-19 Boston, MA (FLAC_AUD Source 2 Master_1 CD)

It was 39 years ago today that Journey opened for the Electric Light Orchestra band in Boston, Massachusetts.  And we are lucky enough to have had two well known tapers that were there and got excellent recordings of the show.

This is the Dan Lampinski (or source 2) master audience recording.  The source 1 recording was taped by another taper named Steve Hopkins.  Both tapers recorded many shows in the smae areas over the years.  And from what I've heard, they never knew each other either.

I'm uploading the Lampinski recording this morning because I like the high end frequencies captured in it.  It is an excellent recording.  The Hopkins recording is also excellent and sounds like it captures more of the low end frequencies.  But overall, I think the source being uploaded has a cleaner and better overall sound.

Lampinski started releasing a lot of his shows a few years ago when he realized there were others who enjoyed the same thing, that is taping and collecting shows, and he released them to friends who helped with preparation, artwork, and getting them uploaded to Dime.

If you are a Journey fan, then you know this is an era of the band before Steve Perry was in it.  Steve Perry didn't join the band until late 1977 and wasn't performing with the band until they toured on their 1978 Infinity LP in early 1978.

Journey had started off in 1973 as a progressive rock band and have a lot of instrumentally based songs with not as many lyrically based songs.  They really rocked.  When there was songs to be sung, Gregg Rolie, the band's keyboard player through 1980, did the singing.

By the dawn of 1977, the band was failing to get their label to record another record.  They had three LP's with the first, self titled LP Journey being released in 1975.

At the point of this Boston concert in 1976, the band was doing a lot of touring but had not hit the stardom that was to come in 1978 with Steve Perry and the even larger stardom that occurred in 1981 with the release of Escape.  That 1981 era also came with the replacement of retiring member Gregg Rolie with Jonathan Cain.  And the rest is the Journey rock and roll history most people know of.

This show is a good representation of the band while they were struggling to hit it big.  They weren't far off, but they just didn't have the musical style yet that they changed over to when Perry joined them.  Don't get me wrong.  They still sounded great musically before Perry and even had some great songs too.  Neal Schon was on fire as a guitar player.  But the change in 1978 was what they needed to move forward and take the world by storm!

March 19th is at least three Journey show's history too.  They played this gig in 1976 in Boston, a gig headlining in Offenbach, Germany in 1979 (and I need a lossless copy of it!!!), and then a gig in Cologne, Germany in 2007 with Jeff Scott Soto filling in on vocals between singer Steve Augeri's departure and Arnel Pineda's arrival as the singer.  Personally, I think Jeff Scott Soto kicked some butt and sounded a lot more "Perry like" than Arnel ever has.  But that's another story.

I may upload another Journey show today or even the other source for this show?  I despise mp3's though and that is the show I'd be more interested in uploading too.  Help me get 1979-03-19 in a lossless format please!  I still have some other music I want to upload first too.  In fact, at least one recording is in the superb+ category and is an incredible performance as well.  Stay tuned!

I hope you enjoy the show...

Feist: 2005-03-19 Austin, TX (FLAC_AUD_1 CD)

This performance from 10 years ago today is probably the shortest (or one of) performances I'll ever upload.  It is only one track and that's because the artist I like sat in with a band named Kings of Convenience for just one acoustic song (track 10 in the band's set which I did not download).  The sound is excellent-to-superb too (especially when she starts singing).

The song she sat in on was a song she did live in a September 2005 concert later in the year too.  I don't know if the Kings of Convenience wrote the song or if someone else did.  But hearing Feist, in the DVD I uploaded here years ago called The Trabendo Sessions, blows this version away.  She really improved on the song when she did it herself.

This sit in was at Austiin's South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival.  SXSW is a yearly event and it was going on last week and may still be going on now.  Friends of mine played there last week and I was planning on going and recording and photographing their gig.  But after never hearing from any of them leading up to the show, I didn't.

I love Feist's vocals so much.  She has a range and sound, as well as great lyrics in songs too, that can reach deep inside of me.  To me, she's the female version of a Steve Perry as far as vocals and range go.

I wish this had been a concert by her instead of a sit in song.  But I'm not sure she even played at the festival on this specific year?  A lot of artist not performing still go to the festival.  And a ton of artist perform as well with stages all over Austin that range from indoor clubs and rooms to outdoor venues.  And as long as I've been around, I have still never been able to go see a single SXSW event and may never get to since I cannot drive (due to my vision...or lack of it).

John Paul Jones played SXSW too in 2000 just a few days after the Fort Worth show I uploaded the other day.  I may have uploaded that SXSW show here already too in the past?  Had I known I'd be legally blind shortly after the next year's SXSW festival, I'd have made at least a few of them and done some recordings too.

Actually, I just did a little research and discovered that Feist did play the festival in 2005 on May 7th according to the Austin Chronicle.  So there is likely a recording out there of this show I have never come across (especially since it was about 2007 before I first heard of her).

I hope you enjoy the song...
