Led Zeppelin: 1969-03-15 Gladsaxe & Norregard, Denmark (FLAC_AUD_Both Shows_1 CD)

It was 45 years ago today that Led Zeppelin played these two shows in Denmark.  There was an afternoon show in Gladsaxe, Denmark and then an evening show in Norregard, Denmark.  Of course, these weren't the  three to almost 4 hours shows they played in later years.  But these were high energy, new band playing at full throttle shows from when Led Zeppelin was about six months old as a band.

I have a feeling the second, evening show ran on longer but just wasn't recorded.  But then again, I'm not sure?  EVSD reportedly took copies of the master recording (which I have too) for the evening show and at least the second generation copy (which I also have) too from when they were treed on RFD.  EVSD supposedly used those to complete their release.  It wouldn't be the first time a bootleg label has done that and I'm sure it won't be the last.  I'd thought about uploading the master and second generation versions of each show separately.  But since this is already grouped as one CD, has artwork, and is ready to upload, I'm uploading the EVSD version.  I can always upload other versions/lineage recordings later if anyone's interested in them.

I hope you enjoy the concert!  Until next time...

Led Zeppelin: 1975-03-14 San Diego, CA (FLAC_SB_3 CD)

Today is the 39th anniversary of this Led Zeppelin show in San Diego.  Unlike previous shows in this California leg of their US tour that are audience recordings, this one is a superb soundboard recording.  I've decided to upload the Liquid Led version today.

Out of the Empress Vally Supreme Disc (EVSD), Eelgrass, and Liquid Led label versions of this show I have, I think Liquid Led's version has the best mix.  The artwork says 32 bit mastering was used in the creation of the discs too.  This show sounds like it would have been an officially released CD set, but as we all know, it isn't.

Enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1975-03-12 Long Beach, CA (FLAC_3 AUD Master Sources_3 CD)

Thirty-nine years ago today, Led Zeppelin played Long Beach Arena for the second night in their California part of their 1975 tour.  This recording is available thanks to my friend David living about 250 miles north of me.

The Mike Millard source in this show is short.  He reportedly got into a traffic accident on the way to the show and didn't get to the concert until near the end.  His source recording of the show, being called source 2,  only contains part of "Stairway to Heaven" through the end.  But in this 3 source version, Millard's recording is used for part of "Stairway to Heaven" and up through "Whole Lotta Love" (including "The Crunge").  David was able to do a transfer of the newly surfaced source 3 which is the majority of this show's content.  Source 1, being called the Long Source, is only used for the beginning part of "Stairway to Heaven".  Here are the notes included in the text file:

Complete show based on the newly discovered 3rd source recording. The new source is an excellent sounding recording but incomplete. The Millard source which is also an excellent recording is used to fill in the missing sections with the old lesser quality source used to fill in the gaps missing in source 2 and 3. The version of source 3 used here is a direct transfer from the master cassettes.

And here are David's notes including the lineage:

I made several versions to get this mix. I call this the "old school" version.  The transfer used here for source 3 was done with the following.  3-12-75 Master Tapes > Kenwood KX-W791 (monster cables) > Sansui RG-7 10 band EQ (monster cables) > Spin Doctor > CDR>flac
Intro - Rain song Cool edit pro was used to bring up one side that was 50% low. Moby dick - Dazed cool edit pro was used to convert mono to stereo.

I was the first to get these master tapes to transfer, Of course not perfect so I did what was necessary. The master cassettes consisted of the following:
Tape A Intro - Rain (one side is real low) flip side Kashmir - Trampled (perfect!) Tape B Moby - Dazed (only one side was recorded) flip side Stairway - Black dog (audio malfunctioned during recording and could not salvage) Tape C Encore - Heartrbreaker (perfect!)

I'm not really sure why the front artwork mentions a "newly discovered soundboard" as being one of the sources, but it does.  There isn't any soundboard recording(s) in this upload.  And as far as I know, no soundboard has ever surfaced anyhow.

Enjoy the show...

Journey: 2009-03-11 Osaka, Japan (FLAC_AUD/IEM_2 CD)

This Journey show from 5 years ago today has a unique factor to it.  It has Arnel's inner ear microphone (IEM) radio traffic too.  So does the show from the previous night in Osaka.  I've got another version of this 3/11 show, one from the Sylph label and using the same audience source, that does not have the IEM part to it.  I'm not exactly sure how this all works or was put together though?  But it's interesting nonetheless.  This version I'm uploading also has the band's group prayer backstage before they walk out onto the stage.

This is an excellent sounding audience recording and so is the recording from the previous night's show too.  I'd planned on uploading it yesterday but got busy and wasn't able to.

As far as the IEM part in the 3/10 and 3/11 shows goes, I'm mystified as to how this is there and what source may have actually been recording the show.  Was it a Journey roadie or crew employee that made the recording?  I'm not sure.  And example of what you hear in the IEM transmission might be something like "Still They Ride, 1, 2, 3, 4, 2, 2, 3, 4" and then the band starts on the song on the queue.  The source I got this recording from, "Mariet", said it reportedly is the earpiece for Arnel and the information heard is being passed to him.  I listened to the 2009-03-10 show with Arnel's IEM yesterday and at points it sounds like a metronome keeping timing near the beginning of a few songs can be heard too.  If anyone has any familiarity or knowledge of how this all works, please feel free to leave a comment and let those of us not sure know.

Enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1975-03-11 Long Beach, CA (FLAC_AUD 1st Gen & 2nd Source Patch._3 CD)

Thirty-nine years ago today, Mike Millard recorded this Led Zeppelin show in Inglewood, California.  This was the beginning of many other Led Zeppelin (and other bands too) shows to come from Millard.  He recorded numerous shows between 1974 and 1990 when he passed away.  And that was fortunate for us Led Zeppelin fans too because Millard capture the arguably best Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego, and I'm sure a few other California area audience recordings we are still listening to today.  Led Zeppelin even used some of his bootleg material in their 2003 release of their 2 DVD set.  That should tell you something about the quality of "Mike The Mike" Millard's recordings when a band as big as Zeppelin uses material (even though they didn't credit him) from one of his LA area bootlegs on their official release :-)

Not only are we fortunate enough to have 1st generation copies of Millard's recording of Led Zeppelin's many (but not all) shows in the LA area during 1975 and 1977; we're also fortunate to have Winston Remaster versions of many of the 1st generation tapes.  Many people attempt to remaster shows (me included) but have neither the full knowledge and capabilities nor the high end software to do it right.  From my many years of collecting and listening to all kinds of music and shows, it is my opinion Winston Remasters are always the very best.  A Winston Remaster always sounds better than any other in my opinion.  I don't know how he does it, but he does it right!

Led Zeppelin: 1975-03-10 San Diego, CA (FLAC_AUD_3 CD)

I just finished up an EAC rip of this show, a show from 39 years ago today.  I bet I haven't listened to this show in the lat 15 years.  It's been so long, I'd forgotten about it.  This isn't a widely circulated show from what I see.  I've only got one version of it myself and it's this TDOLZ version.  It's not the greatest sounding show nor is it the worst sounding either.  It sounds good in songs like "No Quarter" and "less good" in heavier sounding parts of the show.  Still, it's a capture of a night in the history of Led Zeppelin concerts and one all fans should be able to enjoy.

I know there other labels and generations of this show out there.  When I have a little more time to do so, I'm going to try and get the unknown generation copy originally shared by Susan Hendricks.  I'm not sure why there is no Mike Millard version of this show?  Is it possibly he missed a Led Zeppelin show?  Or the better scenario I hope for, he didn't miss the show but it hasn't made it's way to the surface yet?

UPDATE 2014-03-11:  I found I do already have a FLAC copy of the unverified 4th generation (Susan Hendricks) recording of this show I mentioned above and it does sound much better.  Maybe I'll upload it too next year if not sooner?  If anyone's interested in it, leave a comment and let me know.  When I see it, I'll go ahead and upload it then.

Enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1970-03-09 Vienna, Austria (FLAC_AUD 1st Gen Source 1_2 CD)

It was 44 years ago today that this Led Zeppelin Vienna show was played.  I know of two sources that exist for this show and this is the better sounding of the two.  This one sounds really nice while source 2 sounds quieter (lower recording level) and doesn't have the high end frequencies in in it like this version.  I have a few versions of this date.  And to me, this 1st generation copy sounds by far to be the best.

One version I also have is a digital transfer of the source 2 master
tape that uses this source 1 recording to fill in gaps in it.  It is a more complete recording of this show show too.  But I'd rather hear the less complete version that sounds better first.  If I have time today, I'll upload the source 2 + source 1 patched show later today.

It seems pretty obvious this isn't the full concert.  The text file I got with this show mentioned neither source 1 or 2 recorded the encores (if there were any).  Approximately 95 minutes of the performance 44 years ago today was recorded by source 1.  It's well worth the download and listen too even if it is incomplete!

I hope you enjoy the show...
