Journey: 1980-08-02 Flint, MI (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

First off, thanks to my friend "Tales" for getting me this lossless copy of such a great show.  Another friend, "tupchurch", had shared an mp3 version of it he had a few years back and I've been trying to find a lossless quality copy ever since.

I love this show.  It's not the best nor the worst sounding.  It does sound great I think and the setlist really, really rocks with some rarities like "Homemade Love" and Precious Time" that aren't on a whole lot of shows that have surfaced.  This is probably the only time I've heard Journey not play "Feeling That Way" and then go straight into "Anytime" like the radio stations have done ever since I heard the song.  They play the very beginning the live way they start off  "Feeling That Way", you're expecting that song knowing their music, and then they play "Homemade Love" instead.  I like surprises like that.

This show is just a little over two months before the 1980-10-13 Tokyo (often mislabeled as Osaka) show on DVD that "Ljerk" and I put together with the excellent, stereo audio/video stream matrix too, and it's just a little over four months after the Houston Summit show too us collectors love.  I uploaded the Tokyo 1980 DL DVD project here over a year ago right before (maybe after) Christmas in 2012.  I'm still seeding that DL DVD on Dime, have working links here, and people are still downloading it too.  And speaking of that DVD, "Ljerk" created a DVD-5 (single layer) version with extra audio streams, color enhancements, and just overall much better picture quality.  That one is really my favorite version and the DL DVD I haven't even put here on my own site I just recalled.  If you're interested in it, leave a comment and I might upload the DVD-9 (or DL DVD) version here too soon.

I love the energy and playing the band has and does in this show.  And there is very little crowd noise during the songs too.  Also, this is one you can turn up loud and there is no distortion either.  There are a few clicks (possibly from too fast of a burn along the line) and a few, but not many, fast "di di digital" skips (again, likely from a previous fast burn).  The music doesn't really skip but the audio, in very fast repetition that lasts a fraction of a second, has a couple of errors.  I didn't count them but I think it is three or four times this happens and mostly near the end of CD 2.  This is where some of the small clicks (not in a row but periodically) occur too.  It's definitely not a show stopper I promise.

I'd tried doing a treble boost to bring up the high end just a little with Audacity, but after doing this I reverted back to the original, non-EQ'ed copy because the adjustment to the highs seemed to cause a tiny but of audio clipping in the louder parts of the show.  And other than using Declicker in Audacity to clean most of the clicks, I felt this one needed to be left alone because it sounded best.  If I had more knowledge (and I'll learn) on how to EQ the show with more than just my ears, I'd have made it a tad bit brighter.  Who knows?  Once I learn more on how to accurately do this without messing up things I didn't realize I was messing up, I may just do this because I really like this show.

You don't see many live 1980 Journey shows out there.  And it was a great tour too when you listen to or see the unreleased shows from this tour.  This is the same tour (not show) that the officially released Captured CD came from, and in fact, a lot of Captured was recorded in the same state as this upload but in Detroit, Michigan instead.

One last thing I want to mention is the source of this copy.  The artwork I have, Peak of the Dixie Highway, has all the same songs but not the same tracking.  I didn't really notice this until this morning as I was listening to the show.  The Rubicon Productions label is on the artwork but I cannot say for sure if it is the same CD's from that version.  But they both have the same songs but just different tracking according to the artwork's arrangement on the back art setlist.  The songs are in the same order so the show hasn't been altered in the order of the setlist either.

This is a very interesting, live telephone interview Steve Perry did with a Denver radio station two years ago.  I do not know what FM radio station it was or I'd mention the station's callsign.  Talk ranges from the days with Journey (a lot), his solo career, and similar topics.  And one good thing about this interview is the DJ is a huge Journey fan too.  So he knows his stuff.  Steve Perry gets into some personal discussion too that is interesting (at least to me) and he talks well of Neal Schon also.

There's not much to put in the way of details other than it's 57 minutes long and there are no commercials.

As far as I know this was only aired in the Denver area and was not a network, nationwide broadcast.

Being a lifelong Journey fan, everything from 1973 - now, I'm excited to see Perry's been involved in some music project/awards ceremonies this month.  Just a few days ago he was part of a drum-off awards ceremony where he actually joined in and sang a small solo part on stage with about 15 or so other artists.  It was enough to get me thinking and hoping again he may be doing something (as we keep hearing) in his studio.  I guess only time will tell?

One other thing of interest to me is a comment I made a while back ago on Neal Schon's website about this interview.  He actually took 90% of what I said and posted it on his (or Journey's) Facebook account which surprised me.  The reason I was surprised was because I'd talked about liking Arnel but I still wanted to see Steve Perry in the band again before they called it quits.  It's interesting he didn't chop out that part as well as a few other ones.  He did cut out the tactfully worded, and without any bootleg connotations, mentioning of the Denver FM shows broadcast live in 1979 I referred to though :-)  But they applied to the interview too as Perry talks about them.

Led Zeppelin: 1972-12-22 London, England (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

This is a good recording of Zeppelin's first of two nights at the Alexandra Palace in London nearing the end of 1972.  The show is a good show, however; the audio does change up a few times in this recording.  And I noticed there is no organ solo and the final song, "Thank You", at the end of CD 2.

At this point, and after looking at the times for the different versions available, I'm not sure that "Thank You" is on any copies of the show?  And one set of artwork also shows "Bring It On Home" closes out the show after "Thank You".  I don't know if there is a version of this show out there with either (or both) of these songs on it or if they were just played but never recorded.  I've been looking for the (1) low generation copy dadgad appears to have shared in the past on Dime and/or the (2) 2nd generation version (2 CD, not the 1 CD) that exists.  But I haven't been able to locate either of those versions (yet).  If anyone has them and wants to share them on Dime, I'll download them for sure!  I don't think they're going to be any more complete (but they may be).  However; they may be better sounding shows?  And there's only one real way to tell and that's to listen to them :-)

The reason I'm uploading this 2 CD label/version is because I never see this show available anywhere.  I'm sure it can be found and I'm sure it has been uploaded before.  But in an effort to get some of my 1990's trading days CD-R's EAC ripped and backed up, I'm putting this one up for anyone interested in it or anyone that may not have this show already.  The show is definitely not on Dime as of this posting.  The 1972-12-23 show from the second night at Alexandria Palace is on Dime and I downloaded a copy I didn't have yesterday to compare it to one I did.

As I mentioned already, the show's sound changes a few times.  It starts off pretty muddy sounding and then gets better as the second song, "Over The Hills And Far Away", is about halfway into the song.  It gradually gets better and by the end of the show has it has definitely moved up a grade in sound quality.  This is not an excellent sounding show by any stretch, but it isn't a bad sounding show either.  It's in line with a lot of 1972 shows and has its good and bad moments.

I'm leaving both sets of artwork I have in it.  One comes from RambleOnZep.com and the other in the same artwork but I added the back artwork's side tabs with the title/text for the better quality (A4 ?) CD cases discs use to come in.  The original Cobra artwork may have been in a cardboard case; I'm not really sure?  But it did not have the 1/4 inch labels on the edge of the back art for fitting into the older cases and being able to read what show it is looking from the side.  I'm guessing the artwork I had back in the 1990's wasn't the best resolution, but it works.  And just in case you want artwork that is a little sharper looking on the text, I downloaded some low resolution art that would have been the original (same) artwork I had but without the side labels as it came in those days.

Jimi Hendrix: 1969-02-24 London, England (FLAC_SB_2 CD)

I've been a huge Hendrix fan through the years, but for some unknown reason, I haven't even uploaded one of his shows here yet.  There's just no excuse for that!

I was convinced this show I'm uploading was and officially released recording because of its intense, superb sound.  But after seeing it again lately on a trading/sharing site, I looked it up and it hasn't ever been released.  I saw on Amazon's site where it is listed as an "unauthorized release" (i.e. a bootleg) and it isn't available to purchase.  There are people and businesses that will sell these, and that is what is illegal.  But this superb soundboard is legal to share unless they do release it someday.  I personally hope they don't ever release it because it doesn't get much better than this version.  Plus, then you'd have to buy it (or get is somewhere else besides here) because I'd have to pull it and it would no longer be free.

Another thing that should interest Hendrix fans is the first three tracks on CD 1.  They are superb afternoon soundchecks before the show that night.

I have a few excellent video sources for this show that are pro shot too.  They all are incomplete and are missing a few songs as well as they have some interview tracks in between songs.  While that is cool, I hate it when artists interrupt a show to throw in interview segments.  I want to see the concert and then add the interviews at the end.  One specific pro shot DVD adds missing tracks in the audio format at the end of the show under the "Bonus" area of the DVD.  That means the songs are not in order of course, but at least it has the extra songs but apparently without any video.  The sound is excellent and the video is too on this better of the two DVD choices I'm mentioning.  But the audio in this 2 CD set is much more superior and it really sounds like an officially released, store bought type of item.  This is what threw me off for a while and the reason I've waited until not to share the show (after confirmeing it hasn't been released...it just sounds like it should have been).

I was doing research before this upload and noticed in 2010 there was talk about officially releasing the show on DVD.  But it hasn't happened yet, and my guess is, it probably never will.  But if it does get officially released, then I'll pull it from my site if I elect to upload it.  Let me know if you want it and it'll help me make my mind up!

Since the original uploader took the time to add the ffp and md5 files, as well as name the tracks too, I'm not doing anything other than posting the show and making it available to you.  I already mentioned in the lineage I checked the files for CDDA (lossless CD standard 44.1 kHz/16 bit audio properties) vs. MPEG (lossy qualities).  As with many Trader's Little Helper MPEG/CDDA tests, not every track shows to be CDDA.  But this is a common error with TLH and there are many factors that can cause a few false readings.  Most all of the tracks tested as CDDA sourced with a rare exception of a track or two on the CD's.  Believe me when I say this show and file set are highly unlikely to possess any lossless (loss of discernible audio from compression...i.e. the reason I hate mp3, otherwise known as MPEG, audio) properties.  I'm not going to take an extra hour and check the false reading tracks because those who take the time to confirm a recording's source audio know this is a normal flaw that can occur (and does too often at times) withing TLH.  If you doubt the validity of any of the tracks, then get Audacity, sample a mid section of about 30 seconds of the songs you might wonder about, and read the frequency grapsh (FA = frequency analysis and SA = spectral analysis).  It's a good thing to learn how to do anyhow if you really like your music and want to confirm it is CDDA (or not) material.

This is a long show.  So if you download it, make sure you're set to jam out for at least two hours or more and play it LOUD...

2014-12-28 UPDATE:  After talking with a friend of mine that's a big Hendrix fan also, I did some more research and found that the Royal Albert Hall 1969-02-24 show has been partially released.  The following link on Wikipedia will explain things.  And due to this fact, I'm pulling the links from this performance completely.  I'm not going to cut this complete version of the show and start removing tracks.  In this case, there would only be 5 tracks left it appears.  When artists (or their family members, managers, or whoever) start doing these patch projects, I do not like that.  Put a full show up and let the paying fans enjoy it!  I'm sorry about this, but as I stated from the creation of this blog, if there is something officially released and it can be purchased, I'll pull links or never upload it from the beginning.  This one did slip by me in my research before the upload unfortunately, and now; I'm removing the links and their storage on my file sharing site.

Journey: 1983-08-07 Inglewood, CA (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

Here's a great Journey show from their 1983 Frontiers tour back in their home state of California.  This was their third night out of five nights they played at the Great Western Forum ending their 1983 Tour.

The audio is very clean and clear even though it sounds as if the person recording was closer to the back of the venue or trying to hide a microphone possibly.  I had thought about making this recording a project and making it more vibrant in sound, and I still may?  But I decided to leave it as it was because it is still a great, very enjoyable listening experience.

This recording has a muffled sound at times, but as I mentioned, it is very clean.  There's no tape hiss or factors like that.  It may have been recorded using Dolby B settings on the recorder and that may be why the highs need a boost.  I hope I'm not discouraging anyone from downloading the show because it is great sounding.  I'm just trying to be as informative about it as possible.  The bootlegger got a great capture of a great show and they kept quiet during their recording too.  The crowd noise is not a factor either.  In fact, it sounds as if the person recording the show had a quiet area or quiet group of people around them.  And when you do hear a girl scream or some other audience noise, it sounds distant and not next to the recorder.

Journey still speeds up some of the songs as they did on their 1983 and 1986 tours and that's something I've never liked.  But the speed of songs, such as "Don't Stop Believin'", doesn't sound as fast as it does on many of their other shows.  I never understood why the band did this.  And in places like Japan, they didn't seem to do it.  But in America, they did it too often and I wish they hadn't.  It's not every song they did this on either during the years I mentioned.  Songs like "Send Her My Love" and other, normally slower paced songs the band played at normal speeds.  In fact, most songs were played at a normal speeds on these tours.  And in a few shows, the majority were played at the faster speed.  I have no clue what led them to play the songs differently on different nights.  Maybe they wanted to hurry up and get the shows over with on faster played nights?  We may never know?

Anyhow, I believe you'll enjoy this show, and if you're already a Journey fan, I know you will...

This is an incredible show that I've not heard (until yesterday) in many, many years.  I lost it for a long time and have only been able to find a replacement mp3 copy to hold me over until I found another lossless copy.  But as I was searching in a box I hadn't looked through in a decade yesterday, it was in there with a few other trading days shows I'd thought were gone.  It made my day!

This show is awesome in sound and performance.  There are a few split second dropouts in the audio, but not many.  I believe there are 3 or 4 of them but they do not ruin the recording.  The taper quit recording as the band left the stage after "Wheel In The Sky".  He didn't record the audience cheering and missed about a second or two of the encore where Neal Schon's solo begins.  Whoever recorded the show did an excellent job, and as always, the Japanese crowds were polite and quiet during the music and showed their enjoyment of the music between songs.

The CD-R's I got in trade long ago were not tracked at the beginning of many of the songs.  I'm just quessing here; but I imagine the recorder may have been marking new tracks live as the songs changed.  I don't recall if tape recorders in 1982 had that capability but I imagine DAT recorders may have.  That's why I took both CD's, removed all track markers, and created new song tracks.  Nobody wants to jump to a song and it began at the end of the previous track :-)

The trader I got this show from added bonus tracks and there were two songs, "The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love)" and "Where Were You" that were from another show.  They were uncut and in this order and I have no idea what show they came from (yet).  He also had added some tracks from the 1986 Raised on Radio TV Special as filler songs I guess.  I left all of these out since they were not part of the Osaka show (not to mention the Raised On Radio TV Special wouldn't be allowed on Dime anyhow).

One thing I really like about this show is the song order and song selections Journey picked.  This was the end of the tour for the Escape LP and the setlist here contains more of the earlier Journey as well as the current Journey of the time.  "The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love" near the beginning of the show and "Don't Stop Believin" in the middle; that wasn't the normal Journey lineup of songs.  The setlist looks like a late 1978 through 1981 excellent mix of songs.

PREFACE:  Against my better judgement, I'm also including an mp3 version of this show in a separate link.  As much as I am anti-mp3 (or lossy) when it comes to my music (actually everything), I have to admit that this mp3 version that I've decided to add and have had for a long, long time is a better sounding source recording.  I'm not sure if someone took the lossless FLAC source and EQ'ed it to death or if it was always the lesser quality sounding recording?  It sounds great too, but the mp3 version does sound better.  Now, I just need to find a FLAC version of the mp3 source recording so I can trash the mp3 version and remove it for good!

This is a great recording from a 1978 Canada Jam Triumph concert.  The recording starts off with a little tape warble but soon gets better.  The recording has been called an audience and a soundboard recording.  I personally believe it sounds like a soundboard.  The sound is a little flat but it very clean and sounds great still.  I'm not sure if it may have been EQ'ed this way or if it may just have been the way the recording came out?  Regardless, it is very enjoyable listening.

I included a second set of low resolution artwork I found because the date on the artwork that came with this show is wrong.  The wrong dated artwork has June 28th, 1978 (06/28/78) instead of August 26th, 1978 (08/26/78) which is correct.  The lower resolution artwork has the right date.  And I did verify that Triumph played on the correct date at the 1978 Canada Jam too.

It sort of cracks me up what Gil Moore says at the ending of the song "The Blinding Light Show".  He's talking about different music styles and he mentions disco and how the band will never play one note of that music because "Disco...(waits for the crowd to answer) sucks"!  I'd forgotten about that old saying from when I was a kid.  The band almost sounds like another Canadian band, Rush, as they play the following song "Let Me Get Next To You".

I like that Rik Emmett's guitar is very "up front" in this show and very clean sounding.  That's one of the giveaways to me that this is a soundboard recording.  Also, the fact you don't hear the crowd between songs other than very, very lightly is another soundboard indicator.  There were over 10,000 people in attendance at this Canada Jam and it was the largest concert ever with the attendance records at that time (1978) in Canada.  The producer for Canada Jam was also responsible for producing California Jam I and California Jam II (referred to as Cal Jam) in this same time period according to some research I did into the dates.  If this is an audience recording, well, then that jumps it up to an excellent/superb recording.  The show gets better and better audio-wise as the show goes on too.

So take a trip back to 1978 up in Canada and I hope you enjoy the ride...
