Jimi Hendrix: 1970-09-04 Berlin, Germany (FLAC_AUD 1st Gen_1 CD)

Today was a great day in rock 'n' roll history.  With Led Zeppelin playing the "Blueberry Hill" show in the Los Angeles area, over on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, Jimi Hendrix played this excellent show on this day 45 years ago too.

This is an superb audience recording of the Jimi Hendrix show and one I really love.  I have never had the chance to really listen in the sense of trying to review this show though.  And I am listening to the Led Zeppelin Winston Remasters copy of their 1970-09-04 show I just uploaded before this one right now.  But I may make this a night of music and take these FLAC files of the Hendrix show and finally put them to disc tonight.  And of course, that means I will be listening to it really soon too.  I'll make any updates if need be in this post once I listen to the show.

One thing I like in this show is the fact the track "Hey Baby (Land of the New Rising Sun)" is in this show.  There is something about the music in this song that reaches deep inside and takes me back to the days of being a teenager.  I can't explain it, I just feel it!

From listening to this show via the PC Bose speakers and from looking at the waveform, this is really an superb recording I can tell.  The waveform shows no audio clipping and the sound is very well balanced in the tracks I listened to a little while ago.

I feel bad since I've had this show for some time now but I have never given it the real test and cranked it up.  There are a lot of great shows I have still not heard yet and this is the case with too.  Sometimes, you just don't have or make the time to listen because of everything from responsibilities to keeping up with other shows you are downloading (or uploading) can cause you to put a great show off to the side and eventually forget about it for a while.  There are a million reasons we all do this at times.  But most of us also always come around and finally enjoy the music we got too.

Rather than ramble on here about stuff not even related to this show, I've paused "Blueberry Hill" and I'm examining this recording now.  The mix sounds great and there is little to no distortion either.  Jimi's guitar is right up front and his voice is too.  A lot of the time it sounds like a soundboard recording rather than an audience recording.

I was reading a little on this show and it was stated the people in the crowd weren't really getting into Jimi's music at this show.  And it kind of sounds this way between songs where you don't hear the screaming and hollering like you do in many of his recordings.  The crowd is clapping but it really seems quiet for a Hendrix show too.  But that's to our advantage today I'd have to say.

In the recording it sounds as if there may be a few points between songs the taper stopped taping.  I'm not sure and won't truly be until I listen to this show in the living room in a little while.  Jimi also seems to be going from one song to another with no talking in between on a lot of the songs.  Maybe the crowd wasn't keeping him interested and he just decided to do this rather than make comments and statements?  Keep in mind though that I am basing this on checking out certain tracks and the transitions between songs and not from having heard the whole show yet (or recently).  I may be wrongly stating this?

Thanks to "susep73" over on Crosstown Torrents for posting the links to the two photos (below) from this concert being shared here.  And thanks to my buddy Dave for telling me about them!

I'm going to get this one uploaded so I can do it before the 5th of September hits and it's no longer this show's birthday anymore.  I can say this with confidence in closing.  If you are a Jimi Hendrix fan, you'll enjoy this recording.  I can't wait to hear it myself in about 45 minutes!

I hope you enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1970-09-04 Inglewood, CA (FLAC_AUD Source 5 2nd Gen + 2 Other Sources Mix & Remaster_2 CD)

Today, 45 years ago, the infamous Blueberry Hill concert and recording was played and made as Led Zeppelin performed in Inglewood, California.  This is the Winston Remasters copy which uses the source 5 recording (believed to be the best stereo source) and it patches missing parts of the show with (1) Tarantura's Live On Blueberry Hill and (2) the Trade Mark of Quality source.  The mass majority of the audio is of course the source 5 superb recording.

This is a superb show and so is the sound.  I still prefer the sound in A Sweeter Blueberry (dadgad) and I've got that one cranked up now in the living room.  But this Winston Remasters is really just as good of a recording for the most part and it is more complete I would have to think since it uses 3 sources to form a (more) complete show.  I almost always like the Winston Remasters the best in the shows he remasters (not always EQ'ed either).  I really think he has the magic touch on Led Zeppelin shows.  And to be honest, I've not listened to the Winston Remasters copy in a while and I might should give it another spin and see if I still fell the same way!  I've been known to change my mind on a few occasions about which recording I thought sounded better.

Here are Winston's notes:
Please Note before you download: The Hiss on the main source had a high pitch sound to it that I found off putting.  Using a new tool for noise reduction I was able to remove that. But the after effect of doing that gave the quieter parts the wind tunnel effect. I prefer that over having the high pitched hiss sound throughout the whole show.  The Patches using the Alternate Mono - parts of those had better audio from other sources, but I used those because they were complete patches, instead of using 3 different sources for 1 patch.

I hope you enjoy the show...

The taper captured a great sound with a great mix in this recording.  The audio does not have a lot of change in the sound and the mix seems constant throughout the show. The mix allows you to hear the individual band members and their instruments and vocals.  Plant sounds great and up front in the audio and his voice is really in fine shape.  Page sounds excellent and easy to hear too.  His guitar can be heard clean and clear all the way through the show.

The audio drops out (fades) after "Bring It On Home" and resumes during the talking (with Plant telling the people to calm down) before "That's The Way" begins.  So no music was lost in this possible tape flip point of the show.  I'm up to "Since I've Been Loving You" and the taper has been recording the show without stopping the tape (except for the one point I mentioned) so far.

I have just started listening to the second disc now.  One thing I noticed in the waveform earlier  is on disc two.  The audio seems to be louder and there is some slight clipping in the waveform.  I am not sure yet what the reason is for the spike in the waveform is just yet?.  I had wondered if there may have been two sources used to complete the show, but I don't believe that is the case.  While there is no audio clipping on disc one (it's slightly quieter), the sound is definitely louder and even cleaner sounding on disc two as it starts out.

"What Is And What Should Never Be" gets right to the last few seconds, it fade out and then comes back in just before "Moby Dick".  This is the only point where any music is missing and it is very, very little missing at all.

The likelihood (I believe) is the same taper recorded the whole source recording here and he just tuned up the tape recorder a little during the audio heard on disc two.  Otherwise, Tarantura made the audio on disc two a little louder?

This is a great recording of the show whatever the story is.  Whether there are two sources used or one source, and this would be easy to determine with a little research, this is a great recording of this show 45 years ago today!

I hope you enjoy the show...

SPECIAL NOTICE: Re-Uploading Dead Links & Performing Maintenance Over This Weekend!

As many of you know I am legally blind and I sometimes miss messages regarding dead links.  The best way to reach me in a faster and timely fashion is to make a post over on the Bootradr's Blind Boot Blog Community Page.  And if you are a member of the Bootradr's Blind Boot Blog Secret Group (Facebook's terminology), then it is very easy to reach me since that is where I am talking with those of you who've asked to join.  Instructions on how to join are over in the link that contains "Contact Me" as part of the title.  It is above the individual  band links as you scroll down the page and look on your right.

I want to say thank you to those of you who take the time to make comments and reply, say thank you, let me know when a link has a problem, etc.  I am going to try and keep up with comments left better from this point on.

I'm will be in the process of doing PC maintenance and backing up two 4TB drives within the next few days.  And overnight tonight I am trying to re-upload 15 GB of shows that have dead links or partially dead links (some working, some not).  When I wake up tomorrow I will work on updating the pages needing the new links.  If there are any links you have tried contacting me about here on this site but I have not replaced the, the comment area (or the better Facebook method I first mentioned) in this post's comments are is the best place to let me know so I can fix the problems.

Hopefully; and by the end of this weekend, the majority of bad/dead links should be replaced with new links and you can get the shows you were unable to get.  Just remember, if I haven't replied to a comment that you've already made, that indicates I don't know about the links you've reported at this time.  And now is the time to let me know.

I'm not taking on any new requests right now either due to the large number of requests I already have and the need to get the maintenance and backups done.  But I will be taking requests again soon.

Thanks for your understanding, reports, and patience over the next few days as I get caught up and running smoothly for all of us...

Journey: 1978-09-02 San Mateo, CA (FLAC_SB/FM BX Remaster & Upgrade_1 CD)

What better day to share this huge audio upgrade of this Journey show that occurred 37 years ago today than on its birthday.  This is a big sound upgrade and an excellent LP rip and reworking project my "techtuts" and a small amount of preparing by me.

The real audio work as well as the LP owner was done by "techtuts" and I only tracked the songs, removed the beginning and end LP blank spots, used Audacity to Normalize the Side B audio, and removed one silent gap in "Wheel In The Sky" (after the song was over).  "Techtuts" did all of the audio work and sent me the Side A and B tracks to listen to and finish the easy stuff.

This is the best copy of this show I have heard in the last 20 years.  There are some really poor copies and some that are better sounding as well as more complete too.  There are some mediocre copies too that sound nice.  But this one is far better than any I have heard and you won't even be able to tell it was an LP rip either.

All copies of this show, which was an FM broadcasted show, have an issue I really can't put a name on.  I call it channel fading for lack of the correct terminology.  At points the left channel and/or the right channel seem to drop and rise again in volume.  I'm not sure if all copies of this show have come from the same source?  Maybe it was a source not receiving the FM signal at full signal strength the whole time?  Or maybe it was taken from a cassette that had some head problems or was just old?  And there is always the chance this was an issue in the studio at the time of the broadcast too?  I really do not know.  But the problem is not a show stopping issue like I've heard on some other recordings before.

This recording has great stereo separation and no clipping in the waveform.  And the songs still sound really excellent and I can only hope that maybe there is another source that is an even better upgrade to this one (and the full show) in the future.  But until that day comes around, I have a feeling this may be the best sounding copy thanks to "techtuts" and the work he put into making this available to all of us!

This concert was a benefit concert Journey did for a high school.  It was the Borel Middle School Benefit show and Journey raised $6,000 for uniforms for the school.  Ha!  $6,000 back then probably equates to $60,000 nowadays (just kidding...I have no idea).

I created some artwork for the show back in 2000, but this copy already had the LP artwork too that it came with.  Since the LP artwork isn't really CD artwork comparable for the rear of a CD case I'll include the back cover artwork I created and it is ready to print and add to the back case of any regular size CD case.

I have heard that Monitros Studio had studios in San Francisco and San Mateo, California.  I even looked it up in the past and confirmed it via the web at some point.  This is a show that occurred in San Mateo, California from all the research others and myself have done in past years.  My back artwork does have San Francisco on it however because in 2000 that's where "we" thought the show was performed.

This show has some really cool and more rare Journey tracks too that you do not usually hear very often live.  Songs like "I Would Find You" and "Can Do" are on this copy.  And on the full show, which has the four additional songs but not near as good a sounding recording, "Look Into The Future" was in that part of the show.

The date for this show has been in question also for some time.  Most have settled on September 2, 1978. The setlist is not in any normal Journey concert played type of order either..  When Steve Perry was new in Journey (he joined in 1977 and started performing live around March of 1978), they would start their shows off with a few songs without him singing.  This show is arranged in that same manner.  I believe he comes in on the third song.  The songs are in a random sounding and different order and I'm not sure how the band decided on what was going to be played in this FM radio concert.  But it's a great variety of songs and a mix of the new at the time Infinity LP songs as well as songs from the pre Perry era of Journey.  Of course Perry, like in the live 1978 concerts, sings with Gregg Rolie on most of the tracks he was never on in the studio released LP's before he was in the band.  It really gives them a completely new life too.

As far as information goes, don't be fooled by the song titles on the album (surely a bootleg sold) listed artwork.  It lists songs like "Next" as "Midnight Dreamer" and we know that is not the right title.  It also shows "Of A Lifetime" as being named "Kohoutek" which is a completely different Journey song altogether.

The LP artwork included came from a previous Dime member upload of this same show.  The artwork is in a high enough resolution I have been able to zoom in and see the text.  Ironically, and four years before "Separate Ways" (1982) was ever created as a song by the band, the back artwork from the LP talks of Aynsley Dunbar leaving the band as Journey and Aynsley "...have gone their separate ways..." it states.  In fact, I just recalled this was reportedly Dunbar's last performance with Journey before they replaced him with drummer Steve Smith .

I hope you enjoy the show...

UPDATE:Dime member
"sandpshkr" replied with some local to San Mateo and helpful information regarding the school and possible studio name for the beneficiary (middle school) and studio.  I will research further and see if I can confirm any updates to these and correct them in my post as I research more.  I've already corrected the school name above.  Of course, this update won't be in the text file already uploaded.

Led Zeppelin: 1970-09-02 Oakland, CA (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

Today is the 45th anniversary of this great show.  In late 1990's CD-R trade I made for this Silver Rarities Two Days Before copy, I was always confused by the artwork not matching right.  And after wasting hours tonight and becoming convinced it was really the Tarantura Live on Blueberry Hill II copy instead, I was able to confirm it definitely was not in the end.

I did a few hours of research to confirm this is the Silver Rarities (SIRA) Two Days Before copy of the show this morning and learn they just did a horrible job of making their artwork to match their CD tracking.  The SIRA and Tarantura copies are from the same source tape (the better sounding one), but according to reviews, this SIRA copy did not amplify their production heavily like Tarantura did.  And that's a good thing.

It can be a nightmare sometimes trying to track down the information needed to confirm labels, show details, and just information altogether nowadays.  We went from having books and a few resources in the 1990's to having too much useless information to weed through today to find what we're looking for.  But it is all worth it in the end.

(1) 1970-09-02 Oakland, CA (AUD/Silver Rarities)

This show starts of sounding good but by "Dazed and Confused" it starts sounding great and even excellent.  This is a show that doesn't get as much credit as it should.  Since the 1970-09-04 show at The Forum is a better recording (at least 6 sources I know of for this date) many people brush off this Oakland show.  And it's to their detriment they do because the performance and sound are really something to enjoy.

The taper(s) do a small amount of talking during the show but they sound like they're not trying to make themselves loud or heard in the recording.  And they don't talk often either.  Silver Rarities has likely removed the tape hiss from the recording because not much is heard at all.  That can be good and bad depending on how (and how much) it is done.

The audio seems pretty evenly mixed and the only time distortion comes into play is when there is heavy jamming like when the band comes out of the violin bow solo in "Dazed and Confused" and hits it hard and heavy.  But Plants voice still rings out above all of it loud and clear and he sounds in fine form during these California shows in 1970.  The waveform looks great too and there is no audio clipping whatsoever in the show.

The setlist is another nice surprise.  Putting "Train Kept A Rollin'" in at the end of the set, a song not really played (or played much) since their 1969 tour, is a smart choice.  And of course "Blueberry hill" and "Long Tall Sally" wrap the night up just like the band did with "Long Tall Sally" in January of this same year (1970) as they played their gigs with high energy and raw charisma!  This is some of the best music Led Zeppelin did live too.  This is a wonderful show, and if you can put up with a less than perfect audio sound, you have a real treat in store!

The band had not released Led Zeppelin III yet and it did not come out until 1970-10-05.  So the acoustic set with songs like "That's The Way" and "Bron-Yr-Aur" were new to the crowds each night in this part of the tour.  The lucky crowd got to hear new songs before they heard the studio versions of them.  And that is one cool thing Led Zeppelin seemed to always do.  They'd be touring on their new LP before it was released and seeing how the crowd responded to their new songs live first.  Robert Plant messes up the lyrics just a little in "That's The Way" but is back on track without anyone even knowing he'd made a slight mistake.  That must be another plus in playing songs live before they're released on LP officially.  Who's going to know if you mess up since this is their first time hearing the song?

Both CD-R's I got in trade have a one second or so skipping sound at the beginning of each CD.  This was likely caused by a CD-R burning error that the trader I got the shows from had made trying to burn the discs too fast or doing something similar.  This is exactly why you do not want to burn discs at high speeds and I never burn discs any faster than 4X today (it was 2X in the early CD burner days).  If your program shows you can burn discs at 24X, 32X, 48X, or whatever; do not do that!  Burn at slower speeds and be patient if you want an error free disc.  It does not take long at all to burn a full 80 minute CD-R at 4X speeds.  It might take 10 minutes if things are running slow but it is worth the wait.

In conclusion, this is a superb performance with great audio and one all Led Zeppelin fans should listen to at least once in their lifetime.

I hope you enjoy the concert...

Stevie Ray Vaughn: 1985-09-01 Seattle, WA (FLAC_SB_1 CD)

This Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble concert was 30 years ago today.  It was one of the performances at the Bumpershoot Arts Festival event in Seattle.  The festival may have been something put together by country artist Bonnie Raitt?  I'm not familiar with the details of the festival or who else played in the event.  This is an excellent soundboard recording from a third generation cassette source reportedly.

The waveform looks great with no audio clipping and plenty of room to spare for a remastering or EQ job if anyone felt so inclined.  It doesn't need any work because it sounds excellent already.  I'm just indicating that the waveform is nowhere near clipping and has a good amount of space to spare before it would reach a clipping point.  And working on audio like this is easier than working on audio that is already spiking high in a waveform.  There is very little to no hiss in the recording too.  I hear a little in "Life Without You" as Stevie does his talk about people not pushing each other down.  But as the music starts back it can no longer be heard.

The sound is excellent but it is not superb.  The mix sounds fairly even with good low frequency bass and good high frequency guitar and drum cymbals heard.  Stevie voice is a little lower than it should be but you'll have no problem hearing it and the audio in his vocals sounds like it increases too as the show goes along.  His guitar is also a little lower than I'd like to hear it, but once more, it isn't a problem and I'm just speaking of my preferences.  This is a very nice concert and the sound is not an issue at all.

As I was doing research and looking for cover artwork for this show, I came across some other copies that came from FM broadcasts of the show.  Whole I cannot say with any certainty this is not from an FM broadcast, I do not think it is.  There is no audible factors making me think it is from anything other than the soundboard as the original sharing party claims.  And I've listened to the full show too just as I was preparing this post.  And the audience or crowd noise hear between songs is very, very low unlike most FM broadcast recordings where it is usually much more prevalent in those recordings most times.  The Westwood One, Supergroups in Concert Series, etc programs usually turn up the audience microphones during the periods between songs to give it a more live sounding audio I've noticed and that is not the case here.  I definitely would bet on this one being just what it claims to be and that is a third generation cassette copy of the actual soundboard recording.

My research show Bonnie Raitt played with Stevie and the band on the last two tracks, "Texas Flood" and "Testify", but she doesn't seem to be singing from listening to the songs.  She is playing a steel guitar from the way it sounds.  I cannot tell if it is a pedal steel or just steel guitar.

Thanks goes to "Bonzo" for sharing this third generation copy if the soundboard!

I hope you enjoy the show...
