Led Zeppelin: 1970-09-02 Oakland, CA (FLAC_AUD 3rd Gen. Source 1_2 CD)

This is a second recording of a show I just uploaded a few days ago.  I don't know yet if the same source that recorded this current upload  also was the same source as the previous upload I recently made.  I haven't inspected both copies well enough yet to determine.  Either way, this is what is considered to be the Source 1, 3rd Gen copy.

I'm uploading this copy "as is" (just how I got it).  I'm doing the regular confirmations on the files and lossless audio quality confirmation too.   Looking at the lineage, and then double checking via software, these files have been embedded with metadata (information that will display on screen of players that show the data) by the person my copy came from.  I like it when people take the extra time to do things like that.

LINEAGE:
3rd Gen > DAT > CDRn > FLAC > decoded to WAV, appended, and cleaned up (track transitions and repeat) with Adobe Audition 3.0.1 > Tracked with CD Wave > re-encoded to FLAC 8 with Flac Frontend, and then tagged and verified > me > TLH (to decode as WAV and test for lossiness) > TLH (to check for SBE's and to verify original ffp and st5 files) > you

I'm not sure if there is a source 2, 3, or any other sources.  But I do know I didn't find any other sources or artwork for sources claiming to be source 1.  If all recordings came from one source, then that would make sense and until a new source surfaced you'd not likely list any copy as "Source 1".  So this may be an entirely different recording than the one I uploaded a week or so ago.  It can be verified and I'm listening now as I finish the uploading and typing here so I can check.  If I find anything newsworthy, I'll come back and update the information here.

I hope you enjoy the concert...

Janis Joplin & The Full Tilt Boogie Band: 1970--07-08 Honolulu, HI (FLAC_Raw SB_Rare Restored LP's_1 CD)

Here's a classic, very rare recording from an artist out of Beaumont, Texas that turned the 1960's rock scene on its head when she began singing.  Through years of various music changes, both in band members, bands, and the types of music she played, Janis Joplin had the voice that set her apart from all other female artists.  And it was an integral part of the whole San Francisco 1960's - 1970's music scene that has never been duplicated no matter how hard people have tried.

This show, three months before Janis' death, was 44 years ago tonight too!

This recording I'm sharing today was shared around Christmas 2013 as a "mega rare restored first edition vinyl transfer".  I'm not too sure what the story is on this show itself?  But one thing is for sure and that is this show was just three months before Janis' death on October 4, 1970.  So this is one of her last shows any way you look at it.

I'm not able to pull up my source and information as to where I got this show right now, but whether "Doinker" was the person who shared this in December of last year or just originally had shared it in past times, I'm not sure at the moment.  But he did have something to do with this surfacing.  "Doinker" is a well respected name when it comes to reliable information and quality materials and workmanship too.  So the real thanks goes to him for what he's done so we can hear this show today.

Janis sounds a little "in the mood" as she calls it and enjoying herself on this night.  In fact, she sounds great as she sings the songs but she sounds a little stoned or inebriated when talking in between songs :-)  The music isn't Big Brother and the Holding Company of course.  But it is an excellent show and not one where Janis' voice is having to compete with horns being played throughout the songs!

I'm uploading both the unaltered (other than named tracks and embedded metadata) version and the better sounding amplified version separately7.  They will have separate links.  That way if you just want one or the other copy, or both copies too, you can get what you want.  The last two links are for downloading the whole 521 MB upload of both copies if you want them both.

I never did upload the show two days ago as I'd planned.  And since it just passed midnight becoming July 10th a few minutes ago, the 44 years ago today statement doesn't quiet apply.  So ignore it because I'm uploading it now or in another day or two if I don't hurry :-)

I hope you enjoy the concert...

Feist: 2005-07-XX & 2011-10-05 Bronx, NY (FLAC_SB/FM/Studio)

After the previous upload of Feist's 2011-10-05 WFUV FM visit and performance in the Bronx, I realized both the 2005 and 2011 visits and live FM broadcasts by Feist fit onto one CD-R with 4 minutes to spare.  So here's the fast version of this upload because I don't have a lot of time today.

LINEAGE:
(1) 2011-10-05 live in the studio >  MPEG source tracks 1 - 2 mix with lossless source tracks 3 - 9 > TLH (to decode as WAV and test for lossiness) > Audacity (to embed metadata/song titles and info into files, amplify +2.6 db without clipping, and to re-encode) > FLAC 6 >

(2) 20005-07-XX livw in in the studio > Roxio Easy Audio Capture > WFUV streaming audio online  > WAV > CD WAV Editor (to create splits) > TLH (to confirm lossiness on tracks 1 & 2 and pad track 2) > Audacity (to embed metadata/song titles and info into files, amplify +2.6 db without clipping, and to encode) > FLAC 6 > TLH (to reconfirm project is error free and to create and verify md5 & ffp files)

(3) NOTE:
I've added both shows to the CD project and the streaming audio catured from the internet (tracks 1 - 2 on the 2011 recording and all of the 2005 material) is lossy.  I'm leaving it all in the FLAC format since there is lossless material (tracks 3 - 9) in the 2011 recording too and this is a small (-400 MB.) download anyhow.

If anyone has a copy of either of these two studio performances and visits by Feist (or any others) that were recorded over-the-air, please share them with us or leave a comment.  In this day and age of squashed media formats and people who don't care (much less know the difference) all too often, it is becoming harder and harder to find the quality audio out there.

And just as a reminder; the only lossless audio in this upload are tracks 3 - 9 of the 2011-10-05 recording.  All other ,material used for patching and for primary sources came from the streaming audio rip I did in 44.1 kHz/16 bit WAV and it definitely tested and looked lossy (even though a little confusing too...see log file)

If you plan to burn these recordings to disc, I've added each show into it's own folder.  Just add the tracks from the 2005 folder first and then add the tracks from the 2011 show after that and it comes to right at 76 minutes in length and makes a full CD.

I hope you enjoy the music and these interviews from Feist in 2005 and 2011...

Feist: 2011-10-05 Bronx, New York (FLAC_SB/FM/Studio 2 Sources Mix_1 CD)

There really isn't a lot to say about this recording.  It sounds great and is a capture of a live radio station appearance by Feist as she was getting ready for her upcoming Metals tour dates.  There's a lot of talking between the station interviewer and Feist and only four live songs were performed and  broadcasted.  I'm not sure if there is more to this live FM appearance or not (read below for updated info, there is more).  But the beginning of the recording here starts off with the host saying "And that is Undiscovered First, (from the) new Feist record called Metals on WFUV New York..."  I'm not sure if the whole broadcast was not recorded or if the song off of the album (the official release version) was played first and that's why it wasn't included in this project?

Well, I found the 'undiscovered first' song titled "Undiscovered First" last night and it definitely was a live version.  While searching the WFUV online archives of previously recorded performers and performances, I found a first Feist appearance in July of 2005 streaming as well as this 2011 version also.  The only problem is the streaming source is a lossy, mpeg source.  But it does sound very good.

Feist's first time to WFUV, back in 2005, was a better performance because she played multiple songs and had fewer interviews in between.  I'm going to take "Undiscovered First" from the lossy, mpeg internet stream source and add it to this lossless version I had ready to upload here already.  I want this to be a complete set so I patched the two to create that.

LINEAGE:
2014-07-03 (lossless source tracks 3 - 9): No lineage given > me > TLH (to decode as WAV and test for lossiness) > Audacity (to embed metadata/song titles and info into files, amplify +2.6 db without clipping, and to re-encode) > FLAC 6 >

2014-07-04 (lossy source tracks 1 - 2): Additional tracks 1 & 2 lineage >
Roxio Easy Audio Capture > WFUV streaming audio via online (to get intro to program and first song not on original off-air recorded source) > WAV > CD WAV Editor (to create splits) > TLH (to confirm lossiness on tracks 1 & 2 and pad track 2/fix SBE) > Audacity (to embed metadata/song titles and info into files, amplify +2.6 db without clipping, and to encode) > FLAC 6 > TLH (to reconfirm project is error free and to create and verify md5 & ffp files)

I realize the lineage sounds like a broken record with repeats of processes I had to do once I found the missing tracks.  But that's just the way it is.

This is a really excellent sounding recording captured off air by someone (with the exception of the first two tracks).  I wish they'd spent more time letting Feist sing and play music in the studio, but the interviews are interesting too.  Five out of nine tracks are interviews (and longs ones too) or talking and the other four tracks are songs from the radio station's studio live broadcast.

Even though track 1 and 2 are mpeg sourced (aka lossy) audio, I', leaving them as FLAC files just like the regular lossless tracks.  In fact, there are two TLH CDDA Test text files I'm including.  The first one, with the original 7 tracks, shows all tracks are 100% CDDA (or lossless).  However, after adding the first two tracks I found overnight (the lossy ones) to the front of the recording where they belong, the TLH CDDA Test has different results now.  I have no idea what is going on but I'm including both the 'Before' and 'After' text files for anyone interested.

I hope you enjoy the music and the interviews from Feist ...

Led Zeppelin: 1969-11-07 San Francisco, CA (FLAC_AUD 1st Gen_2 CD)

This is an excellent sounding recording of Led Zeppelin's show on this November day in 1969!  This one of the Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones "spotlighted shows" where the taper was obviously in front of Page's stack of amps.  But the bass of JPJ is also clean and clear and in your face too.

One the heavier songs, Plant can barely be heard.  But this is not a distorted recording like some of the ones out there that "spotlight" certain member's performance or playing are.  This is a sharp, excellent sound recorded of this show.  A song, like "Communication Breakdown" that opens the show, almost sounds like an instrumental practice since Plant's voice is so buried in the guitar and bass.  But it again, the sound is clean and very enjoyable.  And when you listen to a song like "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", everything sounds much more normal and Plant can be hear and sounds great because the song isn't as heavy.

John Bonham can also be heard, but even the drums are not as powerful and heard as loudly as the lead guitar and bass are.  It is really awesome hearing Jimmy Page's guitar (even the stuff you might not always hear) and John Paul Jones' heavy bass jamming out from the first song in the show.

I'm not 100% sure the reason for the unique capture of music in this show is solely based on the taper's location.  He may not have been in front of Page's amps?  It may be the way the sound was mixed at Winterland in the early days (1969) for the show.  Page and JPJ could be coming through one channel the taper was on the side of while Plant and Bonham were being routed to the other channel (or speakers on the venue's side) too?  I really don't know.  All I know is this is an excellent change up from most audience recordings we hear from Led Zeppelin or any band for that matter.

Unfortunately, there are some cuts in "Dazed and Confused" by the taper.  The same goes for "Moby Dick" and "How Many More Times" too.  Some cuts are just short ones but "How Many More Times" fades out at just under 12 minutes.  I'm listening to the show again for the first time in a year or two through the PC as I'm preparing this posting.

From my recollection, I have at least four coipies or versions of this show.  I know I've had "Winter Of Our Content" that I got in a CD-R trade back in the 1990's and I also have a more recent 2nd generation tape transfer done by KRW_Co.  I also have it in a box set as well.  It's in a 6 CD box set TCOLZ (The Chronicles of Led Zeppelin) put out titled "Final Winterland".  And once I get the data restored (or attempt to do it myself) from one of my 3TB drives that recently semi-crashed (I can see and access the data but cannot transfer it), I know I have another 600 GB of shows I haven't sorted yet with another copy or two of this show likely there.  I will check these other copies and if I find one that sounds better, is more complete, or whatever the reason might be that could cause it to be an upgrade; I'll upload it too at a later date.

I hope you enjoy the concert...

Led Zeppelin: 1970-09-02 Oakland, CA (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

Here's a show I don't see too often but one that has been out in the trading circles for decades.  It's an excellent recording of a Led Zeppelin show from Oakland Coliseum in 1970 and it was jut two days before the superb 1970-09-04 recordings of the band's LA Forum show (aka Blueberry Hill) were made.  I haven't heard this show in years myself.  But as I was looking around on a PC last night I came across it again and was listening to it for a while.  So I decided to go ahead and upload it here today.  I really love these California setlists that were short lived on Led Zeppelin's 1970 tour.

The show starts out a little muffled as the taper seems to be getting the levels right and things set up, but it soon improves.  The recording has an excellent range of sound.  In other words, it's not all distorted with too much bass or too much high end and flat sounding.  But it does have some slight distortion on some of the heavier parts and I'm thinking that is a result of the taper's equipment used.  I can't say for sure because I don't know what Electric Magic did to the show before they pressed it to silver discs.  But I did notice the waveform looked like the audio was likely amplified with some clipping (kind of like "going out of bounds").  Whether the original taper did this or the label did, I really can't say.  But labels are notorious for doing this type of thing too as they mess with the sound before they press their discs.  But it still is an great-to-excellent recording of another superb performance and one any Zeppelin fan should enjoy a lot.

I have another copy of this show titled "Two Days Before" from the Silver Rarities label.  I got it in the 1990's in a CD trade and really loved it too.  I haven't compared it yet to the version I'm uploading here, but from what I remember they both seem to sound about the same and are likely from the same source.  I'll find "Two Days Before" when I have time and be sure they're the same source.  And if it winds up being there is any improvement in "Two Days Before" or if it is from another source (I'm not sure how many sources there may be at this time), I'll upload it too.

I hope you enjoy the concert...

Led Zeppelin: 1970-03-27 Los Angeles, CA (FLAC_AUD Source 2 & 1 Mix_2 CD)

This is a source 2 and source 1 mix of the show I've uploaded source 1 & 2 of independently.  I start off in the title with "Source 2" due to the fact it is the primary source for this mix.  Source 1 is used to fill in the missing songs not on source 2.  I have a sneaky suspicion that the missing tracks from source 2 likely exist but have never been publicly shared (they're being hoarded).  Of course, I have no proof of this and it's just something I think.  But who goes to a Led Zeppelin show and doesn't record "Bring It On Home", "Since I've Been Loving You", or any songs they have the tape to record?

I'm going with the EVSD mix here for a few reasons.  Even though it looks like they've clipped some audio in their amplification of the show, it does have a better sound and the channels seem to be balanced.  I was comparing the EVSD version to the non-clipped audio on the Cyanine label's The Four Survivors and the Cyanine version just isn't as good sounding to me.  Cyanine uses the source 2 recording as the main audio with the patched audio being source 1.  From what I understood on the EVSD Everybody Feel Alright release being uploaded here, it was suppose to be using source 1 as the main audio with source 2 being the patched audio.  But it doesn't seem to be the case.  Source 2 seems to be the primary audio on both releases with source 1 still being used as the patched audio.

NOTE: I created a torrent and posted it on Dime.  If your a Dime member, you'll know what to do.  If not, sign up for a free account and READ THE RULES.  Go to http://www.dimeadozen.org for their home page.  And remember to keep your sharing ratio at 0.25% or higher so as to not get banned.  It's a much faster download almost always!  Now, back to the original blog post.

I should have at least two other recordings of this show not available right now (until I can get 6 TB of data restored and find them).  I also have an old trade day's 1990's CD-R copy too that is likely source 1.  But the effort and time it'll take to look for the CD-R copy is not what I'm willing to spend right now and I doubt it'd be any better than what I'm uploading too.

I hope you enjoy the concert...
