Journey: 1979-06-09 Passaic, NJ (FLAC_SB/FM_2 CD)

It's been a couple of weeks since I've had a chance to upload anything.  And even though I'm putting up a show right now, I'm still in a busy cycle over here and it may be a few more weeks before I can start uploading more shows.

I can't believe I haven't uploaded this one before.  In fact, I'm still wondering if I've missed it somehow and have uploaded it?

Either way, this is an excellent copy from the master cassette someone used to record this 1979 Journey show as it was being broadcast over the air by radio station WNEW FM.  And it is, as always from Journey, a superb performance too!

LINEAGE:
FM radio broadcast > master FM off-air recorded cassette tape > EQ'ed > FLAC > me > TLH (to decode as WAV and test for lossiness) > Audacity (to embed metadata/song titles and info into files and re-encode) > FLAC 6 > TLH (to reconfirm project is error free and to create and verify md5 & ffp files) > you

I've got a few versions of this show, most if not all being recordings of FM radios broadcasts of this concert, and I'm not sure if this is the best version or not at the moment.  I picked this one to upload because "Stulken" did the remastering on it and he's done excellent jobs on previous Journey projects.  The artwork "Stulken" used was the Rubicon Reproductions artwork for the "Angels in Passaic" titled version.  So I'm "assuming" he remastered that title but it wasn't stated in the text file.

I'm not exactly sure, but "Stulken" may be the same person as "Digital Reproductions"?  I use to do CD-R trading with Scott G., the guy who ran the Rubicon Reporoductions website.  But over the years contact was lost with him.  I've tried contacting the "Stulken" Journey fan a time or two over the years, but I never did get a reply from them so I have no idea if they're the same person or not.  If anyone out there knows the answer, I'd be interested in knowig myself and would appreciate it if you left a comment letting me know too.

Budweiser was sponsoring Journey on this tour.  So needless to say, the Budweiser commercials at the end of CD 2 were two of at least three I have collected that were done by Journey for Budweiser back in 1979 and broadcast over the air during the show's FM broadcast.

I hope you enjoy this excellent Journey show from Passaic, NJ in 1979...

Led Zeppelin: 1970-09-19 New York, NY (FLAC_AUD Source 1 & 2 Mix_Both Afternoon & Evening Shows_ 4 CD)

This is Tarantura's 2000 mix of Source 1 and Source 2 to form a (more) complete show.  I believe the majority of the mix is in the first show of the two being uploaded from this day in 1970.

After listening to the second, evening show as I was making my previous post before sunrise yesterday (it will be by the time I post this), which is CD's 3 & 4, I believe that show was one source only.  Whatever the case, whatever the source, this is a great-to-excellent 4 CD set of both the afternoon and evening shows on September 19, 1970.  And the majority of the sound on both shows is what I call excellent (7-to-9 out of 10).  These are my personal ratings and they may not be the same to you.  I tend to base my own ratings on more than just sound quality and I let how much I like or enjoy the show enter in.  It's not very scientific (or helpful?), but it is what it is.

LINEAGE:
Tarantura 2000 silver CD's > WAV > me > TLH (for CDDA testing & to aligning sector boundaries/fix SBE's*) > Audacity (to embed metadata/song titles and info and encode as FLAC) > FLAC 6 > TLH (to recheck project was error free and to create and verify md5 & ffp files) > you

* I received these CD's in the WAV format originally a number of years back.  I believe the person sharing them wasn't sure exactly what to do or how to losslessly compress and encode them and they were likely ripped with a bad CD burning program causing the SBE's and just left in the ripped WAV format.  I've had the WAV files on my PC for years.  As I was preparing this upload, I finally did all of the things everyone should learn to do to keep the integrity of the music as pure as possible.  Every track had sector boundary errors, but with the help of TLH, they easily were fixed.  My initial burn of the WAV files was just to get a listen in on the shows.  Needless to say, I had a lot of pops and clicks in what I listened to due to the SBE's.  But still having the WAV files, I was able to fix the errors from their initial rip yesterday and not have to fix them after a second rip from my snap, crackle, and pop CD's.  The version I'm uploading is error free and from the direct WAV files I was given from the initial silver CD's burn, but of course, they're all fixed now.

This a great 4 CD set.  And yes, as I listened to the first show again (after a few years) as I was coming back to finish this upload, it sounds much better than I remembered as I uploaded Source 3 of the second show yesterday and made some comments about it.  It has its brighter moments that sound better than others.  But overall, and especially after it gets going a few songs, I really liked hearing how great it does sound (but forgot).

I hope you enjoy this Source 1 & 2 mix version of both of these historic, high energy shows...

Led Zeppelin: 1970-09-19 New York, NY (FLAC_AUD 1st Gen Remaster_2nd Show_2 CD)

There was a recent request for the second, evening show Led Zeppelin played in Madison Square Garden on September 19, 1970.  So here is one of the best sounding copies I believe.

It had been a while since I had last listened to this show and I forgot just how incredible the band's performance was on this night.  Not only did they play some unique songs in this show, they played them with high energy.  Page plays some superb guitar as he making up the solos live as he's playing them.  And some songs have extended parts to them that are even longer than the band's usual extended way of playing them.  It's shows like this that really showcase Led Zeppelin's live talent!

I have made the mistake of confusing information and mixing it up between the two shows at Madison Square Garden (MSG) on this day in the past.  Here are a few facts I am updating today, 2015-09-18, to kelp sort any information I may still need to correct in my various posts of the shows on this date.

1. There was an afternoon concert and an evening concert on 1970-09-19
2. There were at least two sources that recorded the 1st show in the afternoon.  Source 1 is an Eddie Edwards recording and the Source 2 recording is from and unknown taper.  Source 1 is the better sounding taping but source 2 is not bad at all either.
3. There is only one source known to exist for the second show and it was recorded by "Darth9neo".

Here is what "Darth9neo" had to say about recording this show and editing it back in 2005.  I'm just doing a copy & paste of his text from the text file.

Darth9neo wrote:
"I taped this show on a borrowed Bell and Howell cassette recorder, and transferred it the next day to open reel tape. For its time, and the technology used, it is a very good sounding tape. I was in the first 10 rows -- that is, from about the middle of "Immigrant Song." When that song started, I was in the 83rd row.

A few technical details in the spirit of full disclosure: 1) When I made the cassette-to-reel transfer, I had the daft idea of trying to simulate the spatial effects I heard at the concert during some of Page's solos, and during the Page/Plant call and response sections. I know -- hey, I was 16, and this wasn't for general consumption. In the intervening years I had tried various times to restore the tape to mono, but those attempts always resulted in a dulling of the highs, and I was never able to find an EQ that I liked. When I transferred the open reel tape to my hard drive, circa 1999, I did what I could to mitigate the panning, or at least see to it that it wasn't as abrupt as it is on the original reel. What you're hearing, believe me, is an improvement. 2) I also made two edits for the sake of flow. The first is during the guitar solo in Heartbreaker. In 1972, some moron at a party erased a few seconds of the solo. I joined what was left. Similarly, there was a cassette side change during the drum solo in Moby Dick.

Most of you who have heard this recording at all first heard it about a year ago when it turned up on STG, by way of Badloser. I wasn't exactly hoarding it: I had passed out lots of copies, both on cassette over the years, and on CD once I made the transfer. It just never found its way into Zep trading circles, I guess, until I did a trade with Badloser, who immediately identified it not only as a show that wasn't out there, but as an unusual one as well. He upped it to STG, and the rest is, so to speak, history.

At that time, however, Presence noted some audio anomalies -- SBE's, pops, etc. It also had some speed problems, which were corrected in the Eddie Edwards remastered version that has been around for some time.

A few weeks ago, Presence suggested that I make a new transfer, and although I'm not able to do that at the moment, I did find a source that was two CD generations earlier than the one used for the original upload. Since one of those generations was a copy made by a third party on a machine that routinely caused pops and other problems, I sent a copy to Presence, who agreed that it was a superior source. He did some subsequent work on the recording, which he'll detail.

lf you have a problem with audience recordings -- what can I say. This is a fantastic show, with some killer performances, including a SIBLY that, to me, has something that no soundboard has been able to capture. Enjoy!"

"Presence", from Royal Orleans, took the tape he was supplied and did some work with it.  It appears the master cassette has still never had a digital transfer as of 2005,

Presence wrote:
As Darth9neo stated, earlier this year we discussed doing a new transfer of his open reel source. While that did not come to pass, we subsequently learned that the discs used for the initial release were at least two CD generations away from the shelf masters and that during these generations is when the index boundary errors and other clicks were introduced. While I managed to do a pretty good job cleaning those up for my initial "Presence version" it was difficult to do and left several repair artifacts that could just not be cleaned up. After that release Eddie Edwards pointed out that the pitch needed correction, thus "Born To Please" came about.

The shelf master discs are largely free and clear from the clicks and pops found before. There were about three sector boundary errors, but these were generated by splitting tracks in SoundForge and thus are easily restored. For this release I also used parametric equalizing to lower the 250Hz frequency, the hollow reverb of the auditorium, ever so slightly, just enough to allow the other instruments to come through. I then applied a pitch correction of +1.5%, but not to the entire source. Some sections of the tape were at the correct pitch, but most was not. I also cleaned up the source a bit by trying to remove some of the crackle. All in all, it turned out very nice and I hope everyone enjoys it as it is arguably one of the best shows Led Zeppelin ever turned out.

There really isn't much more I can add to this other than it is a very enjoyable show.  I'm listening to the show mix right now as I make this post for the Source 2 recording.  I may upload both the early and late shows from Tarantura's Source 1 & 2 mix release today too?  It's a 4 CD copy of the Source 1 & 2 mix recordings of both shows on this September 1970 day.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy this Source 3 version of the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1973-01-XX Ascension In The Wane - The January 1973 Soundboards (FLAC_SB_10 CD)

Some of the 1973 European Led Zeppelin shows were requested recently.  This is an excellent compilation of the January 1973 soundboards that exist and were put out by the Godfather label (also called Godfather Records and The Godfather).

This share was posted last year by "130269" on a torrent site and all thanks for the original sharing of it goes to them!  They did an excellent, professional job of putting the box set together, naming the songs, and scanning a LOT of artwork.  They didn't shortcut their upload by skipping helpful processes (like naming files, full artwork scans, etc) that help out those who download their work!

This is a compilation of all of the soundboard recordings known to exist or that have surfaced from Led Zeppelin's January 1973 leg of their European tour before coming to the United States.  This is a big upload/download (about the size of a single layer DVD...not too big).

A number of show's from the 1973 tour we have incomplete soundboards of.  Some we may only have two or four (examples) songs from, some we have complete shows from, and some are almost complete but for whatever reason (I think the bootleg labels are hoarding them for future releases personally) we don't have the complete show.  In fact, there is a large number of what I call "CD 3" shows we have from the American tour where all we have is what would be on CD 3 ("Stairway to Heaven", "Whole Lotta Love", "Heartbreaker", etc).  Whatever the reason may be, this beginning leg of the European tour is the same way.  I'll itemize what is included in this upload of course.

One other thing worth mentioning is I don't know whether I'll have to break this upload into two separate uploads (CD's 1 - 5 and CD's 6 - 10) or not yet.  I do know after downloading the torrent version I couldn't transfer the folder over to other hard drives without breaking it up into two parts due to the maximun length of MS Windows' file path construction.  If the path (C:/User Name/Music/Bootlegs/....." as an example) includes more than 260 characters in it, it will not move or transfer all files (or unzip correctly) and you'll get a Windows message letting you know there is a problem.  So, if you download this, create a folder to put the zipped files into, and then run across an extraction problem as you're trying to unzip and look at the files; then try a shorter path or just rename the folder you saved the material into "0" and see if that shortens the path enough to finish unzipping the files.  If the path is still too long, create a temporarily, short folder name (like "0") directly on your C: drive (most PC's primary hard drive) and unzip the files there and then rearrange whatever you need to to be able and move them where you want too.  Creating a short named folder on your C: drive will make the path much shorter.  As one last example, rather than having something like "C:\Users\Your Name\My Music\Bootlegs\Led Zeppelin\....." it will just be "C:\".  That will make the path to the folder name you created and put the zipped files into very short and it will extract with no issues.  It's a much shorter path and it'll allow you to rename anything you want or need to rename after that and then deal with moving it where you want to store it.  Use the md5 checksum file (after installing if you don't have it already Trader's Little Helper which a free program and super helpful tool everyone should have) to verify all files are there after unzipping then.  There are tons of checksum creating and verification programs and you can use any of them if you want to.  But TLH is really a necessity I believe if you're serious about collecting music.

Of course, all that I just mentioned is only necessary if you need to do this or are having issues as you extract the files because the path to where you're unzipping them exceeds 260 characters.  Too bad Microsoft did't make it a 1000 characters huh? :-)

auCDtect Task Manager (for lossless verification & digital signature) > me > TLH (for decoding to WAV for my own lossless testing, to test for SBE's, and to create and verify new md5 & ffp files) > you

NOTE:
Thankfully, "130269" took the time to do this upload right and he named the tracks.  Many people who share shows don't take the extra time to make an upload as good as it can be.  But that definitely wasn't the case here.  It also made it where I didn't have to mess with the actual audio files other than to test for sector boundary errors and decode a version to the WAV format and double check for any lossy properties.  After checking, all I had to do was delete the WAV files and that left the tracks/files originally created just as they were when I got them.  And that also means my file fingerprint (ffp) should be a perfect match with the original ffp text file in each CD's folder that was put there by "130269" too.

There is a ton of high resolution artwork from the box set booklet too and it has all been scanned by "130269" and included in the upload.  While these are just the January 1973 soundboard recordings from Europe, there are other European concerts from the following months too of course (not in this upload though).  Also, some of these recording may or may not be the definitive recordings for each of the dates from January 1973.  In other words, they may be the best out there or they may not be.  There are other master, 1st generation, etc sources for each of these dates too.  But this box set is an excellent compilation of the January 1973 shows and it is very enjoyable!

My favorite out of the box set is the 1973-01-22 Southampton, UK show.  It wasn't too many years ago when this concert was a newly surfaced soundboard.  Hopefully, and there is a lot of speculation on what is or may be out there and hasn't surfaced yet, there will be some more 1973 soundboards that surface and are new to the trading and sharing community soon!

I've renamed folders, shortened the path (file names of folders, not songs), etc to make this a single upload/download that should unzip into most locations a person might save it to without the issue of running into 260 characters or more I think.  But if you do have a problem unzipping it, just do what I mentioned above and that will solve the issue.

I left "130269's" lossless checking and fingerprint text files in the upload as well as tested the files myself and added an additional text file into each folder showing the results.  "130269" did a superb job of putting this box set together and sharing it.  He even added a missing track from the 1973-01-22 Southampton CD 1.  It appears Godfather had left out "Over The Hills and Far Away" in the box set and "130269" added it from another Godfather source that had it on it.  It sounds great and flawless too.

I hope you enjoy January 1973 when you have some time to travel back and listen...

Blondie: 1979-12-31 Glasgow, Scotland (Pro Shot/TV DVD)

PREFACE:  I'd originally shared this DVD back in 2009.  When asked to re-upload it the other day, I said "sure, no problem".  This was something I had no problem doing since it was never officially released.

Well, I should have done some checking prior to uploading it again!  After looking this morning online, I saw that as of November 2010, over a year after my first upload of the show, this was being put on an official release slated to be sold.  Dang!!!  Due to this, I have removed the links here so as to not be breaking the copyright laws and causing myself any problems.  One good thing for those interested in the show is that it can be officially bought and it is the complete show too.

I'm sorry for any problems this may have caused anyone but I cannot afford to be sued or have any legal problems over something this simple (or stupid on my part)!

Here's a Blondie show from New Year's Eve 1979 a few have requested lately.  I'd shared it 5 years ago but a lot has changed (mainly the links and services) since then.

I first really "heard" Blondie in 1980.  I'd likely heard her on the radio prior to that, but I found an 8-track tape of her in 1980 and fell in love with her voice.  I wasn't allowed to listen to rock 'n' roll as a kid so I missed out (back then) on a lot of great artists and had to sneak around to finally start listening to the music I loved.  My dad actually found my first Blondie cassette tape and smashed it against a brick wall.  When he came across the Blondie 8-track tape, he used a Roberts R7 (I think that's the model...been to long ago) reel-to-reel recorder with and 8-track port to record over it.  Today, I own that Roberts reel-to-reel recorder and things area lot different.  I think this is half the reason I love music, and especially the late 1960's - early 1980's music, so much.  The other half is that it was just excellent music!

Enough about me.  Here's the details!

The last song. "Sunday Girl", is only 3 minutes, 6 seconds long and the credits start rolling right before the song fades out and the program ends.  I could've used the standard DVD burner's menu, but instead I decided to just make this a put in and play DVD with no menu.  If I ever build another DVD project out of this I'll add a menu.

There was some confusion the first time I uploaded this DVD as to whether or no it was from the officially released 1979 Apollo Theatre DVD.  It isn't.  That show was from March of 1979, and while I don't have it, the TV program noted that this show was on December 31st, 1979 before it began airing.

I think Blondie and her whole band were at their prime in this time period.  Her voice is flawless and the music, while still having some disco types of sound (I never liked disco and never will) in some songs, was much more rock 'n' roll sounding with guitar, keyboards, drums, and the likes.

I hope you enjoy the superb Blondie performance from almost 35 years ago ...

Led Zeppelin: 1973-07-21 Providence, RI (FLAC_AUD Low Gen_2 CD)

This show was requested recently, and like I've mentioned a time or two on my site here, I'm happy to take requests and share them if I have or can get them.  This is really a great recording of Led Zeppelin's Providence, Rhode Island show in 1973.

To be perfectly honest, I've had a version of this show I got many years ago and listened to a few times.  But it had been a long time ago when I got it and a long time ago since I listened to it too.  But hearing this huge upgrade from my earlier copy, and even comparing it to some more recent copies various boot labels released, this is a huge improvement over those copies.  I'm not sure if it may be a different source or not.  I haven't taken the time to compare them all yet.  This version is reportedly from a low generation copy and that very well may be the reason it sounds so much better?

LINEAGE:

Unknown low generation copy (possibly VHS tape in lineage) > speed corrected > remastered (no noise or hiss reduction in editing) > me > TLH > WAV (for lossiness testing) > Audacity (to embed metadata/track titles and info and re-encode as FLAC) > FLAC 6 > TLH (to test for SBE's, recheck final project was error free, and create and verify md5 & ffp files) > you

Notes by dadgad: Comments: very good audience recording, sound improves after "No Quarter" (different tape/cassette?)

I find it interesting the way CD 2 is arranged.  With songs like "Moby Dick" coming after "Dazed And Confused" and "Stairway to Heaven" as well as "Heartbreaker" coming before "Whole Lotta Love", well, that wasn't the way the band usually played their setlist.  But they obviously changed it up during this July 1973 show.

Since dadgad didn't elaborate on what he did in remastering the tapes he worked with, it's anyone's guess here.  But I'm fairly confident (but guessing) he did EQ this version in his remastering job.  And he did a great job too.

I hope you enjoy this great night and great recording ...

Steve Perry: 2014-05-25 St. Paul. MN (FLAC_AUD Master_Bootradr Remaster_1 CD)

On the same night as the show I recorded and just uploaded of Journey's Dallas performance, Steve Perry made his return to the stage in an Eels concert surprising many.  Most who were surprised were those of us not at the show.  But the lucky people attending the Eels concert, whether they were old enough or not to know who Steve Perry is and was, seemed to enjoy the surprise too.

There are a number of YouTube videos floating around now of that night one week ago today.  But here's something even cooler.  He did it again last night, this time in Washington, DC's Lincoln Theatre.  There is at least one good YouTube 1080i video from that performance I've seen tonight too.  Let's just hope this is leading up to a new Steve Perry release and forthcoming tour to follow.  He still has the pipes and the melody and I am hoping for the the best (a tour)!

This upload I'm making now is of an excellent audience recording of the whole Steve Perry part of the 2014-05-25 show.  However, not knowing or even caring much about the band Eels, I only obtained the Steve Perry part of the show which was the third encore for Eels.  What a treat!  And this sounds so much better than the videos (lossy) floating around on YouTube and similar sites too.  Perry's voice is up front in this very clean master audience recording shared by "captinzander" a few days back.  Thanks goes to them for sharing this recording!

LINEAGE:

Sharp MT200 Mini Disc Recorder in MDLP mode @ 48 kHz/24 bit WAV audio > portable pro Koss headphones (had to do this for the day in place of my microphones) > Soundforge (for WAV to FLAC conversion) > me > TLH > WAV > Audacity (to amplify without clipping, remove audible clicks, embed metadata/track titles and info, down sample to 44.1 kHz/16 bit audio, and re-encode as FLAC) > FLAC 6 >TLH (to align sector boundaries) > TLH (to recheck final project was error free & create and verify md5 & ffp files) > you

NOTE: I'm not really sure what was meant by the headphones use in "captinzander's" lineage?  They'd mentioned having a short in their good microphones and were unable to use them.  But the headphones part was not explained.

The original 48 kHz/16 bit FLAC files were low on volume and had a few pops/clicks in the audio so I fixed that. That may not constitute a remaster, but I call it that anyhow when work is done on a recording.  No EQ work was done nor needed on this excellent, practically superb, audience capture.

I'm adding the 1080i YouTube HD video below as a sample of the show and NOT this audience recording (that sounds much better and is not lossy audio as the video is).  You may have to change the default 360p/480p standard definition setting to 1080i at the bottom of the video to see it in high definition.   If you've already seen it, well good.  If you haven't, even better!

I hope you enjoy this historical night 'captured by (or in) the moment' ...
