Blind Melon: 1994-03-17 Kirksville, MO (FLAC_SB_1 CD)

I've been wanting to upload this excellent sounding Blind Melon show from 1994 for some time.  But like many other times, things have gotten in the way and I've kept putting it off to the side for a little longer (and longer).  But today, it is getting done.

Blind Melon was a short lived band with the singer Shannon Hoon unfortunately.  They were/are a bunch of talented musicians that had a really classic rock meets modern day sound in their music.  I saw their second from last show in October of 1995 (nobody knowing the end was around the corner for many years to come) from the front row and was blown away by their performance.

Unfortunately, the singer Shannon Hoon died a few days later while the band was in New Orleans for that concert.  Shannon's drug addiction got the best of him and he passed away on the tour bus thus ending their skyrocketing career they had started.

The band continues on today.  I've even seem some 2014 shows out there.  After they found a new singer and gave it another try in the 2000's they tried to make a comeback.  However, and not that they were sounding bad either, the dynamics had changed and the shows I have heard just were not carrying the same energy and sound.  I believe they've gone through two and possibly three singers up to this point after Hoon's death.  But trying to replace the angst that Hoon had and that led to so many incredible songs was something the new singers could not replace.  I'd still go see them in a heartbeat if I knew they were coming to town because the rest of the band was so talented they still could carry the show and it would be very enjoyable to see them.

The waveform has no clipping (or maybe one spike into the red really) but it does show some brickwalling.  But the audio really sounds excellent-to-superb and there is a very nice mix in it so I don't hear any need to really work on the audio.  But if you wanted to you would have to deal with the brickwalling.

This show cannot be the complete show I am guessing.  There are only seven songs and one of Blind Melon's shows would have been longer than that in a normal show.  Even if they were an opening band they would have played more.  I'm guessing this is about half of the show or possibly even less.

If you've never heard this band I recommend giving them a listen.  And please do not base your opinion of the overplayed song "No Rain" that we likely all got tired of hearing on the radio and MTV back in the mid 1990's.  Personally, while it is a good enough song, it is one on my least favorite songs the band ever made.  It's too bad they don't have songs like "I Wonder", "Holy Man", or "Mouthful of Cavities" to name just a few great songs in this show.  But like it has been for decades now, the radio only played (or plays) two or three songs over the air from most bands and the real gems go unheard many times unless you buy the CD's and find them yourself.

Just listening to this show now I am wanting to try and find some more of the shows I know exist out there (some I only have in mp3 formats).  A lot of the lossless shows I have are very bad, some are great, and a few like this one are really excellent and superb.  But the band sounds superb as far as their performances go in just about any show up through Hoon's passing in October 1995.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Rush: 1994-05-07 Toronto, Ontario, Canada (FLAC_SB Remaster_2 CD)

Today is the 22nd anniversary of this excellent-to-superb sounding Rush concert in Toronto.  I got my first copy of this show on silver CD's in the late 1990's in the Animated released title.  This is the same titled source and it was remastered by "leegeddy".

As far as the remaster goes here, it seems to not be an audio remaster by EQ'ing the show.  The audio sounds just the same as my silver CD's.  It looks like the show was just tracked differently and some clicks/pops were removed from what is mentioned.  As far as the clicks/pops go, I'm not sure where they were located on the original Animated discs release because I have not noticed them on my copy.  I'm not saying they may not be there also...I just haven't noticed them.

The waveform looks perfect and has no audio clipping or other issues I can see.  And the sound of this show is really enjoyable as well.  This, to me, is really a superb recording of a Rush Counterparts tour.  But there are still better recordings from the tour so I will rate it as an excellent-to-superb only because I know there are a few better sounding recordings.  The show has a very nice mix and all three members and their instruments can be heard evenly.

On my silver discs copy of the show the first two tracks are (1) "intro" and (2) "(The) Spirit of Radio".  But here in the remaster the tracks were joined together to form one track.  The second difference is on the remastered copy the "Country Music" part the band did on this tour is not its own track and it is merged with "Cold Fire" to form one track.

The more I examine things while comparing my original copy with this remastered copy I do see there has been some amplification added as well to the remaster.  And this was done right too.  The waveform for the original copy shows no audio clipping either but it looks like some amplification was needed anyhow to bring up the audio a little.  The remaster was done very well and I see no visible errors at all in it.

The sector boundary errors I fixed were not any that would have made any difference if you had burned the FLAC files to disc without aligning the boundaries.  The errors were in the last track on each disc.  This location (final track of a disc) reportedly does not cause issues when located there.  But rather than chance it, and just because I like to make everything as perfect as I can, I went ahead and used Trader's Little Helper to fix them as I always do.

As usual, I am listening to the show now as I am preparing the upload.  Until earlier this morning (hours ago), I had not listened to this show in at least two or three years.  And this Rush Counterparts album tour was one of my favorite "newer era" Rush tours.  I remember buying the CD around 1995/1996 and really liking the songs.  I played it everywhere I drove, went, etc.  Not everybody around me liked it (at least they didn't act like they did) but that never phased me any.  A number of the songs from this album (or CD) touched home with me at the time.  I really thought "Cold Fire" was one such song.  Hard to believe that/she was 20 years ago now!

Any Rush fan should really enjoy this show and recording I am sure!

I hope you enjoy the show...

As we would expect, the waveform does have some clipping but it is not atrocious like some other EVSD shows have been over the years.  The labels (not all but a lot) like EVSD really do not seem to understand how to work on a show without clipping the waveform (audio) it seems.  But this is no big surprise either and it is something we've come to expect from EVSD (or brickwalling if it is Tarantura).

The show starts off with Robert Plant's voice breaking and sounding really bad.  But it soon improves and the show is really a very nice performance by the band.  I think somewhere after "Sick Again" you really don't hear his voice being a problem in this show.

The mix is good but I cannot say for sure if it was too bass heavy or not right now.  As I listened via the headphones Wednesday night I made a lot of changes to the sound and got the show sounding like I wanted it.  At times I had to lower the bass setting due to it being so strong.  But nevertheless, the show sounded excellent and I really enjoyed hearing this soundboard for the first time.

Nobody has done any scans of the artwork yet it seems.  At least if they have they have not shared them yet.  I've gone ahead and searched the web and got what I could on e-Bay and a few other sites.  But we don't really get these shows for the artwork anyhow do we?  If I ever get some high resolution scans I'll add them here.

I was going to upload the show last night but really wanted to listen to it first.  Now, I don't feel like reviewing it because those who are going to get it will hear it for themselves and those that aren't getting it (but should) will have to wonder :-)  Seriously though; I just want to get it uploaded and get to sleep tonight (or this morning really).  You will like this audio if you like Led Zeppelin and should be very pleased.

Thanks again to "Smoking Pig" for being the first to get this one out for us to listen to!

I hope you enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1971-05-03 Copenhagen, Denmark (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

Here is a show I have never uploaded a copy of before.  I had wanted to upload this show on its 45th anniversary yesterday but I was not able to do so.  So I figured I'd upload it this morning since I cannot sleep.

This is the copy I decided to go with because I think it has one of the best mixes and the work done on this copy sounds and looks great also.  The highs are not cut from this copy like on some of the other label copies and it doesn't have the rougher sounding distortion that the master copy has.  I'm not saying this is the very best copy, but from my checking of about 6 copies of the show I have, I liked what I was sampling in this copy a lot so I chose it.

The waveform looks fine in this show's audio and there is no audio clipping.  There may have been some slight compression used when the show was being mastered.  But it sounds like it comes from a low generation source and as I mentioned up top the highs are more present and the distorting portions sound much better here in this recording.

The audience is not an issue in this recording either.  They are relatively quiet or not caught by the taper as the music plays for the most part.  You can hear them clapping in various songs and hear some talk, whistling, etc throughout the show.  But they were a quiet crowd.  And there even seems to be a rumbling going on in the crowd too because Plant jumps all over the people causing the issue and more or less tells them they will not play if it continues.

As with all shows lately, I am revisiting this one as I prepare the upload.  And I really like it more and more as I listen.  The sound improves a lot too around "Since I've Been Loving You".  I'm sure the taper had to get things set and working right and do the technical adjustments earlier on as we all have to do sometimes.

There are some parts of the show with distortion and it really is in the real heavy and fast parts of the show sometimes when the bass, drums, and guitar are all jamming together.  It sounds like the distortion comes from the taper's gear just not being able to handle the loud show and the limitations with his gear.  Not every part like this is distorted and the distortion is not the kind that is so bad you cannot listen to it.  You can still hear the show just fine.  And the taper sounds like he is close to the stage as well so each member can be heard pretty equally in the mix.

There are a few rarities in this show as well.  The band plays "Four Sticks" and "Gallows Pole" as well as "Misty Mountain Hop" as one of the encore songs.  "Gallows Pole" is played in an incredible way and it sounds awesome in this performance.  "Misty Mountain Hop" became a normal track in the 1973 tour but it wasn't played a lot (maybe at all...I need to check that) in the 1971 shows and hearing it in this show is rare.  He introduced the song saying "this is a song from the next album" and it does sound different than later versions too.  I have always loved the "Minnesota Blues" and "Honey Bee" parts of some Led Zeppelin "Whole Lotta Love" performances.  And they play them both in this show.  Robert Plant also adds in part from "Celebration Day" in the near end of "Communication Breakdown" which is a thing I don't think they did in any other recordings of their live shows before/after this show.

I just noticed as "Gallows Pole" is ending the recording sounds like it becomes brighter sounding.  It almost sounds as if another source may have been mixed in.  It may not be anything at all like I am saying it "sounds like".  It may be something as simple as the taper making an adjustment to his gear.  But the distortion I spoke of sounds to have lessened also as "Whole Lotta Love" starts up and this would have been a spot I would have expected to hear the distortion more.  I do not think this a second source mixed in but you tell me what you think when you hear this part of the show.

I really think this is a great-to-excellent sounding show myself.  I love the sound but I also can deal with imperfections in a recording as long as I can still hear the songs fine.  And that is the case with this recording.

One last thing worth mentioning is the great job the taper did at keeping the show sounding the same throughout it.  Unlike many other shows out there, the audio seems to have the same great sound throughout the show and you don't have a mix of better sounding parts of the show alongside other parts sounding worse.  The only (small) issue in the sound changing is the parts where some distortion is present.  But overall, this should be a show any Led Zeppelin live fan should enjoy without any problems!

I hope you enjoy the show...

Pat Benatar: 1979-11-06 Cleveland, OH (FLAC_SB Master_1 CD)

I was playing around on YouTube earlier and saw a Pat Benatar concert that reminded me I had been meaning to upload this show being shared now.  So I guess YouTube is good for something after all?

This is an excellent sounding recording of a Pat Benatar show from 1979.  I don't know this for sure, but since the setlist is short as well as her concert I imagine she was an opening act on this night.  This recording is from the soundboard master and it is a great show.

The waveform looks fine with no audio clipping or any other noticeable errors.  The mix is very well done with both the high and low frequencies being present and clean & clear.  And there is also good stereo separation in the recording too.

I did notice a few digital clicks in the second or third song that at some point were obviously introduced into the recording.  I imagine it might have been during some of the CD-R burning in the lineage.  But it is short and not really anything to worry about.  It probably only lasts about 5 seconds or so.

I haven't heard this show in a decade or so and I am listening to it as I make this upload tonight.  I like these earlier Pat Benatar shows and may upload a few more soon.  The 1970's through around 1983 seem to be my favorite time frame for Benatar's music.  I've still got a few LP's at my home I grew up in that I had bought as I was starting to listen to the band around 1980 or 1981.  As with a lot of great music back then, we had to back track and see what the band had made and released earlier after we heard something we liked on the radio.  And I did just that with Pat Benatar.  This tour she was on in 1979 was for the In The Heat of The Night LP release and I believe Crimes of Passion was the LP that came after it.  Those were the only two LP's I could find I remember as I searched the record stores back then after buying the Precious Time LP.

I cannot personally confirm the lineage given in this post or whether or not this was an FM broadcast like the artwork I found states.  The artwork did not come in the download and I did a Google search and found it.  This likely was an FM broadcast but this specific upload I am sharing will state what the information provided (the lineage) states.  I am doing this because I just noticed (as I was almost ready to upload the show) this is a "Spider-Web" torrented show originally.  I did not get it from "Spider-Web" or his torrent share myself.  But I do know he is someone who can be trusted and if he claims this is a master from the soundboard reel-to-reel tapes I am sure that it is!

I try to always follow people's requests they make when sharing a show.  I hope others would do the same for me.  But in this case, and after preparing this file set and then realizing it was one "Spider-Web" requested people not change the file set on if they torrented the show, I cannot do this now.  Not only have I already worked on this upload changing files tonight but I had done this back a long time ago too.

So my request is this.  Download and enjoy the show but do not share it elsewhere online since I screwed up.  If you want a copy you can share online, find the "Spider-Web" original torrent and then share his original copy please.

I looked high and low before starting this post as to where I originally got this specific copy and finally found the information.  I almost always save a record of the sites I find shows on in an e-mail to myself.  Or, in earlier days, I'd copy and paste the post I found it in into a Word document.  In this case, I only found the Word document for this specific copy of the show when I got it in August of 2009.  I know I got this from a site no longer around called Quality Boots and the information on the site (and in my Word document) made no mention of this being a "Spider-Web" sourced recording and I was going off of that information I found (the Word document).  However, when I found the original text file the mention of "Spider-Web" was in it.  That is when I saw "Spider-Web" first mentioned.  But the website had all of the same exact information on it as the text file with the exception of any mention of "Spider-Web" removed unfortunately.  Had I seen who originally shared it I would have known better and not changed things (like embedding my own metadata and changing the md5 file).  I am including the original text file in this upload as well as the original Word file I saved.

I know from the many great low generation copies of Led Zeppelin shows "Spider-Web" has shared he is a great guy and resource as well.  I sure didn't expect to see him associated with this Pat Benatar show either.  But he was.  So again. please do not share this anywhere else online (at least this copy).  I am asking for this help to keep from "clouding the waters".  Otherwise, I'll make sure not to upload any shows I change but then find out I shouldn't have if a mistake like this happens again (and with my vision it might).  I appreciate your help and if I find the unaltered (just changing names, text file, and small stuff...no audio changes) copy in the future I will replace it here and leave it untouched as originally requested.

I hope you enjoy the show...
