Led Zeppelin: 1970-04-05 Baltimore, MD (FLAC_AUD Source 1_2 CD)

Here's is a great recording of an early career Led Zeppelin show in Boston.  This is from source 1.  Source 1 is the longest and most complete as well as best sounding source to have surfaced so far.  I think this is also known as source 3 in certain circles.  But since there is no standardized "sources" reference, I go by the one the folks over at Royal Orleans do most of the time.  And they call it source 1.  Ironically, I do have source 3 too.  I still haven't found source 2 yet but I am looking!

There is some clipping of the audio on CD 1 but CD 2 looks just fine.  I'm not sure if this was done by Apple Music or the original taper though.  As I mentioned earlier, I have another source for this show too (source 3) and it sounds just about the same as this source.  This biggest difference at first glance is this version is about 18 minutes longer that the other source.  I'll upload source 3 too in the not too distant future.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Mazzy Star: 2012-07-15 Algés, Oeiras, Portugal (FLAC_AUD Master_1 CD)

This is an incomplete recording of a Mazzy Star show at the 2012 Optimus Oeiras Alive Festival in Portugal.  As with most Mazzy Star recordings this is another excellent one.  Hope Sandoval's voice can be heard well but it wasn't as loud as it might sound in most recordings.  There are plenty of reasons this could have happened but I don't know why it did in this case.

This recording is an incomplete capture of the show because the taper stopped recording to change their location for the Radiohead show that followed the Mazzy Star show.  That's too bad.  The taper mentioned how they hated to cut the Mazzy Star show short because they were enjoying it a lot but that they were more interested in the following band and had to move to another location to record them.  Thankfully they were able to get most of the Mazzy Star concert though.

All thanks goes to "ziggyswoon" for recording what they did of this show and for sharing it too.

I hope you enjoy the recording...

Rush: 1994-03-22 Auburn Hills. MI (Pro Shot DVD_2 DVD)

This is a superb two disc pro shot Rush concert from 1994.  This is without any doubt one of the best videos to have ever surfaced from the band live.  The picture quality as well as the audio are spectacular and the performance is just as amazing.  I've had this DVD for a long time.  My first DVD of it was a 1 DVD copy that was nowhere near as good of a video or audio source as this project's sources.  And around 2009 or 2010 I got this source being shared somewhere (sorry, I cannot recall where or who to think).  The additional detail I got from another site sharing it too and they obviously had the text file I did not have.

This is a must have for any Rush fan!

It seems nobody knows the story on how this show surfaced.  If they do, they aren't saying.

This concert was professionally filmed during the Rush Counterparts tour.  I think this was one of Rush's best CD releases in their modern day (at the time) era back then.  It was a lot better than some of their 1980's releases and it was a time when Rush was reemerging as a rock and roll music playing band again and not adding the new wave tint to their songs.  This is my personal opinion and feelings about Rush's music.

I think each and every era, and especially the 1970's, of Rush live had (and still has) something excellent and great in it as the band has played and toured up through today.  But having seen Rush a few times, and having heard what true musicians these guys are, it is easy to enjoy all of Rush's music even if there are a few songs in a show (like "Roll The Bones" for me) you don't care for.  Because it will just take a few minutes and there will be a song you love.  And I have also come to appreciate a lot of the songs I use to not like as much (like "Roll The Bones") after years of seeing and hearing shows with the song in it.  Rush really rocks!

I hope you enjoy the concert...

Hearing these early shows from after Journey's departure in 1987 and their failed return with Steve Perry in 1996 is great.  The songs were like new to the band again because they hadn't been playing them for a long time.  Instead of a burned out version fans can often get when a band has played a song literally thousands of times and night after night, you get a more energetic version of the song and the new members in the band (as well as the old ones) giving it their best.

Steve Augeri and Deen Castronovo both were new to the band and 1998 was the first year Journey returned to the stage other than the one time, three member Bill Graham tribute appearance in November of 1991.  Journey was playing smaller venues too in 1998 because they hadn't worked their way back up to the arenas yet.  And the 1998 and 1999 setlists had a lot more change up in them from show to show too.

This capture of the return of Journey to the stage is an excellent one.  The taper, probably using a DAT or maybe a mini disc recorder, did a really excellent job and the crowd noise is low.  The crowd is happy and excited but they are not interfering with songs because the taper did a great job of keeping that noise out I believe.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1977-04-28 Cleveland, OH (FLAC_AUD 2nd Gen_3 CD)

This is an upgraded recording from other copies I have and the best one I've heard for this 1977-04-28 Led Zeppelin concert.  The previous night, known as "Destroyer" commonly in boot titles, is an excellent soundboard and one I really have enjoyed over the years.  But I haven't given this 1977-04-28 show as much listening in recent years.  This copy does sound much better than the older copies I have had and listened to over the years.

This recording starts off with some tape issues but that resolves itself fast enough.  The recording seems to gradually get better and better, almost as if the taper was moving or changing their location to a better spot the more the songs progress.  This is reportedly all from one source and seeing it is a Presence Production I know that has to be true.  But the sound changes a lot, almost as if another (better) source is being used when the fifth track, "Since I've Been Loving You", comes on.  But then it seems the sound goes back to a lesser quality sound again by "Ten Years Gone" too.  The sound obviously changes throughout the show and I am going to listen to this copy again this morning to update this post later today if need be.

I'm uploading this show because I'm confident this sound changing issue is just something that has to be dealt with on this recording.  I didn't get it from Presence however.  So I am doing that right now.  If that direct, not having gone through a third party copy sounds just the same way; I'll know then it isn't a flaw.  But either way, a flaw or not, I know there are some Led Zeppelin fans who would like to hear this show even if only parts of it sound real good and others sound not as good.  "No Quarter" sounded really good to me!  And if the copy from Presence himself shared sounds any better (indicating the third party my copy came from changed something) I will upload the better copy.  But again, I'm just saying I will "if" but I don't think this will be the case and I believe both copies are going to be identical.

LINEAGE:
AUD master > cassette (Paul C.) > cassette ("A Presence Production" mastered by Jason Peterson. Cassettes provided by Unklejimbo) > *pure and unadulterated, warts and all. Originally mastered at 96kHz 24bit, sample conversion to CD completed with ProTools utilizing highest quality pre and post filtering and 0.7bit dithering.  > me > TLH > WAV (to test for lossiness and **pad final track) > Audacity (to view waveform, embed metadata/track titles & info, and then to re-encode) > FLAC 8 > TLH (to double check for SBE's and create and verify new ffp & md5 files) > you

*   italicized text is an exact copy & paste from Presence's original information.

** I've been told when a final track in a recording has an SBE issue, that does not have to be fixed and it creates no problems.  This may very well be true?  But in this show each time I left the last track alone there were issues in the FLAC copy with the first track and SBE's as well as the end of "The Song Remains The Same" missing a small amount of the show as it transitioned into the next song "Sick Again".  Once I padded the final track, the issue resolved itself.  So I'll be sing the fixed, padded version even if it is not needed in this upload

I remember the first time I supposedly got this show.  It was a mislabeled recording of the first night's show (1977-04-27).  It was disappointing because I thopught this second night may not really exist and might have been a rumor back then.  These were the days before the internet made everything so easy to research keep in mind.  And I didn't have a copy of Luis Rey's book either to go by.  In fact, I made the mistake of buying a book by Robert Goodwin that was not near as accurate or informative as Luis books with concert dates, setlists, and other information were.  It's hard to believe that was at least 'ten years gone' by times two :-)

One thing to keep in mind if you use or look at the embedded metadata I added is this.  I accidentally noted this as a "Presence Remaster" and that is not the case.  This recording is the unadulterated (not messed with) sound according to Presence and it is not a "remaster"

I hope you enjoy the show...

Robert Plant: 1993-09-18 Jacksonville, FL (FLAC_AUD Master_2 CD)

UPDATE:  I was listening to this show in the living room on the home theater system after  uploading it and realized there is a small amount of distortion in parts of the show with heavy bass (like the bass in "29 Palms").  While this show still sounds excellent, I do stand corrected in my earlier statement saying there was no distortion.  Overall, the bass is one of the things that makes this recording so great.  But the clipping of the audio is likely where the slight distortion comes in.

This is likely one of the best sounding Robert Plant audience recordings from th 1993 Fate of Nations LP/CD tour.  Thanks goes to 'Datfly" for taping and sharing the show.

The only thing not as loud and clear as the music is Plant's vocals in the recording.  Plant's vocals can be heard, but they aren't as loud as the superb sounding capture of the instruments and rest of the band.  But it doesn't ruin the show at all.  The sound probably is this way due to where the taper was positioned during the show and it looks like it was probably in front a a speaker stack (see taper's recording location notes below the lineage).

When looking at the waveform of the audio it is clear that there is some clipping of the audio.  It is not anything my ears pick up and I doubt your ears will either.  It's my guess this happened from either too high of a record level or possibly from EQ'ing.  But I doubt the clipping was from EQ work because "Datfly" is a well known taper and trader/sharer and it is likely he'd have put any EQ work in the lineage.  The clipping is nothing at all to worry about since it doesn't create any distortion in the recording.  "Datfly" did an excellent job of capturing this performance over 20 years ago and it is one of the very best Robert Plant 1993 audience recordings I know of.

I believe this is one of my favorite Robert Plant solo tours also.  With a great mix of great songs, it really is a well rounded show.  I've liked the song "29 Palms" since I first heard it when it was new.  I feel the same same way about a lot of the Fate of Nations songs like "I Believe" and "If I Were A Carpenter".  That LP/CD release had a bunch of great songs on it and Robert Plant did them justice when he performed them live.

I hope you enjoy the show...

SPECIAL NOTICE: Bootradr's Blind Boot Blog On Facebook

I'm trying something new and I've started a Facebook page for this site.  I don't know if I will keep the Facebook site, how long I may keep it going, or just what to expect from it yet.  But if it goes well, I think it could be a helpful tool.  And it gives those of you interested (and myself too) a way to be in contact or ask questions.

As many of you may know, I am legally blind.  So there will be times when I will be slow to answer, respond, or even catch up.  And I likely will miss things at times.  So never take it personally if I miss something.  And don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask or post something again.

Part of what got me to thinking of doing this is a recent loss of a lot of my e-mails by my internet service provider.  I'm still trying to get them back (or the ISP says they are), but I'm not counting on it happening anymore either.  I lost contact with a number of people because I (a) didn't have my e-mail addresses backed up and (b) never really worried about or thought this could happen.  And since e-mail is kind of "outdated" nowadays, I thought Facebook might be a great way to stay in contact as well as a few other modern methods.  I'm not wanting to get too many things I have to check each day going.  But after I see how this Facebook adventure works, I might start using my Twitter and other services too?

If things go well with the Facebook site, I'll keep it going and it will work great as a conduit or line of communication.  I'm still in the process of setting the account up right and it may be a few days before I decide on how I want it to work.  But I'm open to ideas and ways you think the site can be useful and helpful too.  So please don't be afraid to post questions or comments.  Just please help keep it clean and something respectable.  And of course, make sure to keep it legal too!

Pink Floyd: 1977-07-04 New York, NY (FLAC_AUD Master?_2 CD)

This is an excellent recording and Pink Floyd show from one of my favorite eras in their music (1975 - 1977).  This recording is a transfer of the master tapes (one way or another) and it sounds excellent.  I think I actually had bought a silver CD of the second disc (different label and not from the master necessarily) back around 1996.  There were so many shows at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in a row here in 1977 it's hard to say for sure without comparing them closely.  But this recording being shared here today is the whole show and not just part of it.

The lineage was not written very well and is short and confusing.  But it is clearly stated this is the master copy too.  And if I determine it is a 1st generation copy and not a digital clone of the master, I'll come back and update the information.  But the resources I've used all say it is a digital copy of the master in one way or another.  I believe the lineage prior to me is saying it is the analog master (audience 2 discs) put to 3 different CD-R copies.  Or, the master tape was transferred to two analog sources and then to CD-R?  I'm keeping it as it's being called for now and that is a master copy.

I have a busy day today so I don't have a lot of time to critique the recording.  But I can copy and paste some of the original sharing party's notes.  I'd credit them but I have no idea who they may be.  Here's a copy and past of some of their shared information:

"Notes: A very nice recording. The sound quality is excellent and it's a stereo recording. I'd give it an Ex- since there are some clap happy folks near the taper, but not to the point of distraction. The taper also bumps the mics a few times...The performance is electric!  Dave's solo during Pigs 3DO is amazing! There are about a hundred highlights during this show in my opinion, but you'll have to check it out for yourself."

I hope you enjoy the show...

David Bowie: 1972-11-25 Cleveland, OH (FLAC_SB_1 CD)

I am not a David Bowie fan!  I really don't care for his music and never have with one small exception.  I liked the 1972 to 1973 Ziggy Stardust Tour because it was much more rock and roll sounding.  The musicianship as well as Bowie's vocals sounded right during very this short period of his career.  He was still a self made freakish looking guy, especially during this tour, but his having a rock band (at least to me) made this an enjoyable tour and time I can enjoy listening to.

This show is coming up on it's 42nd anniversary too in just one more week.

This soundboard sounds like it could use a good EQ job.  It sounds like it is a mono recording too.  But it isn't bad at all.  It just isn't great either.  It almost sounds as if this could be an audience recording to me.  And then track 11 all of the sudden is great stereo and then it goes back to the original recording.  Obviously there are more sources than just one used for at least part of the show.  I've listened to about half of it myself so far so I'll make any updates (like this one) if I notice any other big changes as I listen and it uploads.  Butanyhow, it is what is is, it's something different, and here it is.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Journey: 1983-05-08 Uniondale, NY (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

It's time to get back to some of my roots here tonight and upload a new show I never have uploaded yet of one of my favorite bands, Journey!  I've been jumping all over the place musically lately, and I probably will for a little longer too.  But I have to interject some of my favorites at the same time and this is one right here.

Here is a recording that was shared by the Rubicon label but no artwork ever seemed to have surfaced for it.  My good friend and Journey fan, "tupchurch", was kind enough to make some artwork for this CD.  And I somehow forgot about uploading the show I guess?  I still cannot remember why it was still in my "To Upload" folder because it was almost completely ready to be uploaded but it was just waiting there.

This is a great show listening to it through the home theater system or the PC speakers.  It won't win any awards for best sounding show.  But it is very easy to listen to and it sounds like the band is feeling it in this Uniondale show on this night.  I've been listening to "Send Her My Love" and "Still They Ride" via the PC speakers as I've been typing this post up.  And it makes me want to find where I put the 2 CD's of it a few months back after listening to it (again) and put them into the better sound system (again).

Steve Perry's vocals are on fire this specific night!  Anyone who knows the history, the turmoil, and the story of Journey around the 1983 tour time knows they were going through a problematic period.  With the fighting and changes that led to their 1987 demise with Steve Perry, this was one of the most emotional points in the band's history I think.  The songs and the way they play them display that.  This is a stellar show any Journey fan would like I am sure.

The waveform on this show looks excellent and there is no audio clipping at all from my examination of it.  This is a very good recording because you can hear the music and Perry's voice well.  Unfortunately, the fidelity is what you might expect from a 1983 stadium recording.  It isn't the best but it's far, far from the worst too.  Once you start listening to the show you soon adapt to it and realize how nice it does sound. And the clarity soon becomes apparent too!  The sounds is very consistent too throughout most of the show making this recording that much better and reliable.

There are some digital errors at the beginning of CD 2 on the song "Escape".  Who knows the cause?  Maybe someone burned a copy too fast, scratched, or smudged up a disc the music came off of?  I have no clue.  But it doesn't last but a few seconds at most and everything seems to go back to normal.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Sara BAreilles: 2013-05-09 Vancouver, BC, Canada (FLAC_AUD Master_2 CD)

This is a slightly different kind of Sara Bareilles show than most.  She's playing without a band and she's doing a lot of talking between songs.  Plus, this is a longer show than most of her normal 74 - 78 minute ones too.

This is an excellent recording.  The taper tracked the recording (made splits) at each songs as well as each time she was talking for a little bit.

I'm not really sure what Bareilles was doing in Canada on this tour or even if each show was like this one and without a band.  I know when I saw her on September 27th, 2013, she was wrapping up some other mini tour too with other artists opening before her.  I believe Dallas was the very last show on that leg of the tour and then she took a break and a month or two later started her full tour (which I wish was what I could have seen but I'm happy I saw anything).

I looked up and saw a lot of YouTube videos on this Vancouver performance.  Sara Bareilles was sitting behind a half wall looking like the album release, a landscape of New York City in a large way, and she seemed to be playing the piano most of the time.  I think she played her guitar too on some songs.  But I need to listen to the full show to say for sure because I wasn't thinking about it as I listened earlier.

I'll post a YouTube video as a sample at the end of this post to give you an idea of what this 2 CD set resembles.  It seems very enjoyable and her voice is in fine shape as it always seems to be.  I'd still like to hear her get back to more of her 2007 roots musically.  But I'm not complaining either about most of where she's at now musically neither.  And as I said before, Sara Bareilles in one of my "guilty pleasures" since I am rock ad blues to the bone.  Well, and melody and musical talent loving too I guess :-)

I hope you enjoy the show...

Giuffria: 1985-02-07 Albuquerque, NM (FLAC_AUD Master_1 CD)

Here's a 1980's flashback band.  It's also one you seldom see any live recordings from.  They were pretty much a 'one hit wonder' kind of band, but they did have a great song they were known for.  It was very Journey like in the sound and it was at a time when nobody knew what Journey was doing too.  Heck, they even had a song titled the same as another Journey song named "Line of Fire".

I definitely bought the cassette tape from Guiffria when I heard the song "Call To The Heart" on the radio.  And somewhere, stored with tons of other officially released cassettes, I still have it I'm sure.

This isn't the best or worst of recordings.  It is decent and one of the better Guiffria recordings out of the very few I've found or heard.  I imagine the band was an opening act because it is a pretty short set and they never made it very big either.

One thing that is nice in the file set is there are some photos from the show taken by the taper and sharer "FLashfan".  It's always cool to see shots from a show.  He had asked if anyone would use the images and create some artwork for the show.  So the same still applies because nobody ever did.  Help out if you have the time and capability to make some artwork.  I have both but I don't have the software.  And for some reason, Photoshop 7 (aka 2001 version) doesn't work on Windows 7 either :-)

I hope you enjoy the recording...

I'm not sure if this was a live broadcast by the FM radio station or a rebroadcast.  But either way it was recorded off air on 93.1 FM WXRT and it sounds superb.  The waveform indicates heavy clipping of the audio throughout the broadcast unfortunately.  But it isn't something noticeable as you listen and the audio really sounds superb.

I hope you enjoy the recording...

Mazzy Star: 2013-11-13 Chicago, IL (FLAC_AUD 44/16_2 CD)

This is a superb recording of the Mazzy Star show one day short of a year ago today.  This is the 44.1 kHz/16 bit copy and I'm going to try and get the 96 kHz/24 bit version that was also shared.  I'd like to make up a DVD-A (or A-DVD) of this band with a great sounding recording like this one.

This is the band I said I was recently introduced to and really like.  Like I said before, it's hard to put my finger on why exactly I like this band other than the various influences I hear in their music, the low key performances (no jumping on stage and cursing or screaming...I hate that stuff most times), and just their sound and talent.  What a range in styles too they exhibit.

The waveform shows a tiny bit of clipping during the show and 95% of it is at the end of songs as people are clapping.  It is not even noticeable or discernible as you listen to the show and I only mention it because I like getting and giving details.

The taper, "JB", recorded the show in the 96 kHz/24 bit WAV format and he shared that recording too.  I'll hopefully get it, and if so, I hope to find some good, high resolution photos of the band to make a slide show for the audio DVD (with the 96/24 higher quality audio).  If you think you can help with some good quality images and don't mind, please let me know.

I hope you enjoy the show...I sure did...

The waveform for this recording shows an excellent audio recording with no clipping of the audio at all.  I'm going off of my memory from listening to this show last December when it was shared as well as listening to a few clips on the PC here today.  But this is a great recording with some excellent sections in it too I'd say.  The sharing party, "tonsofsobs", gave it a B+ in his rating opinion.

I'm looking for my CD-R burned copy I made to listen to it again today.  I may actually listen to a few Boston shows today?   Today is the first really cold day (and I LOVE the cold) of the year in my area.  I think I'll make me some hot chocolate, put in a show, and kick back and jam out today.

It's a great thing to me reminiscing when an Arctic front finally makes its way into the area and it somehow causes me to start thinking about the days when I was growing up.  I always loved the winter and hitting the roads and driving with a tape like Boston, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Led Zeppelin, or about a thousand more bands I liked listening to.  I'd probably be preparing myself for a camping trip on this cold weekend back in my younger, no vision problem years.  I'd be setting things up to where I could kick back around my campsite and campfire with a friend (or a few), have the tunes playing, and just enjoying the company and memories being made.  And today, not being able to do those things I use to (very seldom if ever anymore), it does the soul good to remember those good ole days, the friends.  Some I still talk to and they're still around, some I have no idea where they are, and some are gone and/or passed away today.

What I wouldn't give to be able to go camping with my ole friend Johnny Davis and his brother, me great friend Ed, like we use to.  We'd take our tents, a boat, our fishing poles, and whatever else we needed including the tunes and head out to the Sam Houston National Forest and Lake Conroe often.  Johnny was a country western listener while I was roick 'n' roll listener.  But he always enjoyed the Journey, Bad Company, many other bands, and especially Boston recordings I had.  Johnny passed away earlier this year so those days are just memories now and memories I'll never forget.  Rest in peace old friend and I'll be thinking of the many trips we made as I listen to Boston today.  Heck, I might even open the front and back doors on the house and let the cold air in as a reminder of how much fun it was camping out and sitting around the fire talking and having a good time :-)

I hope you enjoy the show...

Page & Plant: 1998-08-23 Cologne, Germany (Pro Shot DVD)

This is an superb performance as well as quality copy of the Page & Plant Rockpalast show in 1998.  With the pouring rain, it looks like you could throw a penny into the audience and it would never hit the ground because the place it packed and very densely populated.  This is one of the best, most high energy shows I've seen on the 1998 touring the guys did.  You can tell Plant "is feeling it" (he even says so) and so is Page.  The rest of the band is as well and everyone is at their best.  They rock out and put on a stellar performance.

Only one thing could make this a better viewing experience.  And that is to get the double layer DVD (DL DVD) of the show again.  I believe it comes with LPCM, 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround, and DTS audio.  I had it, but it was lost in a 2010 hard drive crash before I could ever get it to a DL DVD.  I'm looking for a replacement but am happy with this DVD at the same time.

It really sickens me that Page and Plant didn't decide, "OK, we did our 1995 solo tour...let's get John Paul Jones and use Michael Lee on drums and have a Zeppelin reunion" in this 1998 tour.  This was the perfect time because Plant's voice was sounding great and he could have handled it with no problems.  Heck, just watch this show and you'll see for yourself.

This is a very Zeppelin sounding performance and I highly recommend it for any fan!  The sound is awesome and the picture is too.  As always, Cosmic Energy does the DVD up right!

I hope you enjoy the concert...
