Journey: 1986-10-15 Philadelphia, PA (FLAC_SB/FM_2 CD)

This show is superb in audio quality but I think the band is not as sharp.  It's a great show, but the songs are changed up musically and vocally in a less enjoyable way to me.  To me, it sounds like the band is tired and should be taking a break.  They seem to be in too big of a hurry to finish the show (from the beginning), and as in many of the 1986 Raised on Radio tour shows, the music is sped up too fast.  Just a few days before, and that being my previous upload too, they sounded much sharper and better and not as "in a hurry" (for lack of a better description).  The songs are great, but when they play them at such fast speeds, it makes me want to use the pitch control and slow them down just a little bit.  Of course, this is just my opinion.  You have to make up your own mind if you agree.

This is a much better sounding show audio-wise than the Detroit show, and possibly the best sounding 1986 show to have surfaced so far.  I just wish it was a better performance.  I'm not calling it bad.  But I do consider it to be more sloppy and not the normal, energetic performance Journey is known for presenting.  I don't know if it had anything to do with the struggles going on between the band members, management, and who knows who or what else or not?  This show is pretty much 3 months before Journey disappeared and wasn't heard from again until 1996.  So speculation is all I have and the facts never have been revealed.  But I don't imagine it was a good time for any of the members and that may be why this show just isn't as good of a performance as even the show less than a week earlier.

Don't let my slightly negative review stop you from checking the show out and making your own decision though!  It still sounds great and it is a superb capture of the show nearing the end of the Steve Perry era of Journey's music.

There are two different sets of artwork for this show with the same title.  I'm including both.  One is a low resolution copy and one is a high resolution copy in the two sets.  On some of the artwork it shows extra bonus tracks.  Those are not in this upload.

I hope you enjoy it...

Journey: 1986-10-09 Detroit, MI (FLAC_SB/FM_2 CD)

Out of the five or so copies I have of this show, this one is currently the best.  It's an excellent, and more complete recording of a show Journey did that was aired live via satellite transmission to Japan.  This recording, full lineage unknown, was recorded by someone in Japan it seems because the radio announcer girl is speaking Japanese with a small amount of English as she introduces the show and as she comments a few times throughout it.  I've had this exact version of the show since the 1990's, but after listening to my copy yesterday, I realized this one is so much better and has a much lower lineage if it is from the same exact source that recorded mine.

Before I lost a 1 TB hard drive I didn't have backed up around 2010, I did have another version of this show that sounded even better.  I realized this morning as I was going through the different versions of the show I have, the even better version was not a version I had anymore.  What a bummer!

Thanks goes to "RockNBear" for sharing this version on Dime.  I left their EAC text files and original text file intact and put them into a folder named "original uploader's files".

There are definitely a number of songs missing from this show that were recorded but not in this version being uploaded.  There's no "Don't Stop Believin'", "Be Good To Yourself", etc, etc and they definitely were played.  As with most FM broadcast shows, one city may air a more complete recording when it is played and one may broadcast a less complete version.  I'm guessing Japan does the same thing?  I have a more complete version on this PC, but two things keep me from uploading it.  First, it doesn't sound as clean  And secondly, even though it was encoded as a lossless file set, it tested as a 99% to 100% MPEG (or lossy as in mp3) copy.  Whoever that version came from likely was trying to pass it off as a high quality lossless recording and it isn't one.

I guess it's time to finish up the work on uploading this show, so in closing, and as always, I hope you enjoy this 1986 Journey concert...

UPDATE ( a few hours after the original posting):  I'm listening to this show now and I believe there may be a few sources in the recording.  It's a great recording, some parts better sounding than others, but a great one to have too.  There are a few cuts at the end of songs you can tell.  I'm not sure if it is due to whoever recorded it off-air removing commercials or if it is from the addition of another source making it a more complete show?  And if you like Journey, you will not be disappointed at all by what I'm mentioning here.  It doesn't ruin the show or anything like that!

Joe Walsh & Barnstorm: 1973-09-24 Arlington, TX (FLAC_SB_1 CD)

Here is a superb sounding sounbdboard requested by someone of a Joe Walsh & Barnstorm show from the University of Texas in Arlington.  This show has to be unique because Joe Walsh was with The Eagles as he joined this year.  And seeing this is from September of 1973, he must have joined very soon afterwards.

One of my favorite (but seldom heard on radio) songs from The Eagles is "Turn To Stone".  I had for many years thought this was their song.  But as you can see by the setlist, Joe Walsh brought this one to The Eagles obviously.

It sounds and looks as if track 2 contains a few songs and they aren't tracked individually.  This may be the way the song is suppose to run, I do not know right now.  This show is a very clean and clear recording and I imagine it may have been done by UTA (the school) students since they have a well known audio/video department there (or at least did in the 1990's).

I left the original uploader's text file and EAC rip text file intact in this upload and put them into their own folder.

I hope you enjoy this show...

Journey: 1979-05-09 Denver, CO (FLAC_SB_2 CD)

This is an excellent recording of the second night of Journey playing at Rainbow Theatre in Denver during their 1979 Evolution tour.  I uploaded the first night, 1979-05-08, a day or two ago.  This show seems to be more complete and has 18 tracks being played on this Wednesday night almost 35 years ago.  I've never really seen a lot talked about giving details for either show, but amongst Journey fans who collect and trade live shows, this is another good one!

This show sounds better than the previous day's upload of the 1979-05-08 show.  It has a cleaner and clearer sound (and 1979-05-08 sounds great too).

Here's some important information on my first, primary CD-R copy (this upload) and the EAC process I went through to fix some digital errors in the last six tracks.  I really didn't realize I had errors on these tracks until a few weeks ago when I was doing my EAC rip.  It took EAC 72 hours to rip tracks 13 through 18.  And it seems to have almost completely fixed these errors even though a good ear can catch some in the last track's final seconds.  I'm guessing that when I got my copy from "digital_journey" it was ripped (by unknown program) too fast.  That, or my copy produced these errors over the last 12 to 13 years could be the issue?  I have broken the EAC burn up into two sessions so there are two text files.  First, the no problem tracks which were 1 through 12 were ripped and then the second, 72 hour rip of tracks 13 - 18 were made. Oh yea, and by the way, the error fixed version EAC log shows Peak Levels at 92% to 100% and the lowest Track Quality percentage is 90.4%.  And I used Audacity's "Click Removal" too.  So it's still a great rip and an excellent sounding show.

As I mentioned in my previous 1979-05-08 Denver show upload, these shows have been reportedly labeled as soundboard and soundboard/FM.  I've been told the shows are soundboard recordings, likely from the KEZY FM tapes, even though they were aired live on KEZY FM too at the time of the shows.  I have no way of confirming either claim, but I do believe these are soundboard recordings and not an FM recording made off-air by somebody.  The quality of the sound as well as the source of my information leads me to believe this is correct.  I'd love to find out the facts but do not know if we'll ever get those.

I do have one request today.  If anyone has the silver CD copy of this show, either the U.N.C.L.E. label's version (same as what I'm uploading) or the one or two other label's versions, please check and see if the clicks I talked about fixing are on your silver CD copies too.  The best place to listen for them would be in the last 30 seconds of the recording.  It may be they were on all copies, and if that's the case, then this is definitely an upgrade.

I hope you enjoy your Journey back to 1979 in Denver for the second night's show...

Journey: 1979-05-08 Denver, CO (FLAC_SB_1 CD)

This is an excellent recording of the first of two nights in a row of Journey playing at "The Rainbow" (Rainbow Theatre) in Denver during their 1979 Evolution tour.  I've been told this is a soundboard and not an FM broadcast recording, however; I do not know for sure.  I'm thinking this may be a soundboard recording from the radio station tape itself possibly?  The shows were broadcast live on Denver's KEZY FM, and even though this doesn't seem to be the complete show, it is great and it may be complete.  This was a Tuesday night and not normally a big concert going night across America.  The second night, or Wednesday night, is a more complete show (may even be complete) and I'll be uploading it too.

Over a decade ago, my friend, "digital_journey", got these two Denver concerts directly from a guy in Denver that had a treasure trove of Journey materials, shows, and master/master copies of videos and music alike that he was getting rid of.  They were professionally made too.  I saw things on this guy's site that I have never seen since and have been looking for since too.  He had some concert footage that was professionally shot from Journey's 1981-11-07 Dallas show (a show that still has never surfaced at all) as well as a lot of the master material such as interviews with the band from a Dallas local TV news personality that were aired on KXAS TV in Dallas.  This is just a small example of the vast material he had and he seemed to "be in the loop" better than anyone I've ever known when it came to uncirculated Journey material.  We could've got his whole collection for $200 because he was getting rid of his collection he said.  Looking back, I can kick myself in the rear for not selling whatever I needed to and buying what he had.  I just didn't have the money because, once again, this was right after my eye surgeries and I was without work, money, and vision then.  However, my buddy did buy a few items from him and these two shows I'll be uploading from Denver 1979 were two of the items he got.

The only "artwork" I'm including comes from the LightScribe disc I created for one of my copies.  I have looked on hard drives, online, and everywhere else I can think of trying to locate my original scans but I haven't been able to find them for this first show.  I have the next night's, 1979-05-09, full artwork scans in high resolution and the 1979-05-08 artwork I'm looking for should be right next to those.  But it isn't.  If anyone wants the artwork, and once I find it, I'll add a small zipped file with it to this post.  The artwork at the bottom, a very, very low resolution Gypsy Eye label artwork, is not the right artwork for this CD.  It's the same show and the same date; it just isn't the same label.  And the resolution is so low it wouldn't be good to use for printing either.

I hope you enjoy your Journey back to 1979 in Denver...

Journey: 2004-02-14 San Antonio, TX (FLAC_Bootradr Master AUD_2 CD)

Here is the show that made me grow my hair long again!  It was a little over two year after my eye surgeries left me legally blind, I was broke due to not being able to work, and I had a choice.  I could either go get a haircut or go see Journey.  Doesn't sound like much of a choice does it?  After going to the show, and still being broke too, I decided I didn't need a haircut after all.  It just make me wish I hadn't already cut it off in 1998!

This show was the main event at San Antonio's 55th Annual Stock Show & Rodeo.  My buddy, "digital_journey", called me up and asked if I felt like riding down to San Antonio to go see Journey.  The tickets were super cheap (more than $15...thanks "digital_journey" for covering me) and the show was excellent.  The recording came out really good too.  Even better than I recalled as I listened to some of it before ripping it with EAC today.

I need to listen back to where this occurred, but somewhere around "Chain Reaction" an SBC Center security guard came up and asked if I had a microphone.  I just ignored him, partially because I wanted him to leave, but also partially because I couldn't see him.  He gave me some flack (not the the good FLAC) and I tried to use the blind thing to ward him off.  It worked, and I think he came back again, but after that he left me alone and I just recorded the whole time.  As far as I was concerned, he was out of sight, out of mind!  I'm just glad I didn't get kicked out and was able to record the whole concert really.

One thing different about this show than other shows I've been to was the rotating stage.  SBC Center, now called AT&T Center I believe, was an indoor "do,me" type of structure from what little I could see.  My buddy took 41 photos.  Unfortunately, the camera didn't do the best of jobs.  I don't think there were any camera phones back then (thank God) and this was likely done with a 2 - 4 megapixel camera.  I'll add a few to the bottom of this post to give you an idea (zoomed in of course) of what the stage looked like.

Just typing this takes me back to that great trip.  We're only 6 weeks away from it being 10 years ago right now.  My how time flies.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy this concert because there are many more to come...

I believe this may be the first 1986 show I've uploaded of Journey?  It is also most likely the last good sounbding recording of a live Journey show with Steve Perry.  Little did the fans (and maybe even the band) know this; but as of February 1987, after finishing off the Raised on Radio tour, the band disappeared and didn't resurface until 1996 when they all got together and surprised Journey fans with a new CD titled Trial By Fire.  Again, they didn't launch into a tour and singer Steve Perry was given an ultimatum and left the band for good.  In 1998, after new Journey lead vocalist Steve Augeri joined the band, Journey was on the road again and has been ever since.

I do have either one or two shows after this one as Journey finished up their 1986/87 tour.  They are audience recordings, but sadly, they sound bad at best.  The show(s) are from Hawaii and were just very poor audience recordings.  One I still have on cassette tape and have never transferred to CD.  The other should be somewhere around here on a CD.  I may upload these some day?

I mentioned having a few copies of this show.  I chose this one because it most likely sounds the best.  I have one other copy that sounds even better.  It was a 1999 remastering I did of my copy of the show I had in those days.  The only problem is I obviously clipped the audio by amplifying the recording just a little too much.  It sounds really great, but as you listen through the different songs, there is a slight static/popping in louder parts of the show and nobody wants that on their recording.  I may be able to fix the errors and plan on trying one day because the recording sounds that much better than any other I believe.  The copy I'm not uploading doesn't have any sector boundary errors, which cause popping sounds on CD's and other CD quality methods of listening to the audio.  The problem is solely in my mastering and over amplification as I was doing my EQ work on the show.  Besides, this copy sounds very good anyhow and it will be enjoyable to Journey fans I'm sure.

I hope everyone is off to a great 2014 and I hope you enjoy the Long Beach New Year's Eve show too...
