Led Zeppelin: 1979-07-23 Copenhagen, Denmark (FLAC_AUD_Bootradr Silver CD's EAC Rip_2 CD)

PREFACE: Unzip this one is a very short folder!  I'd title it "0" and then once it is unzipped you can rename it however you want.  Otherwise, you may run into some errors unzipping it since only a certain number of characters (260 to be exact) can be in the name of a file path.  Save yourself the trouble of doing it twice and just unzip it in a shortly named folder :-)

This Silver Rarities copy was a requested item from a good Led Zeppelin collector friend, and after finally getting the EAC rips done on the show and preparing it, I'm uploading it today.  This is a great-to-excellent sounding recording but it is not the best copy as far as what is available nowadays.  I have uploaded at least one, or maybe two, much better sounding copies here in the past.  Do a search of the site by the 1979-07-23 date and you'll quickly find any other posts for the other copy or copies if you're looking for them.

I got this copy on silvers back in 2000 and this is the first time I've ripped them with EAC.  The show is a great Led Zeppelin show too.  Both this show and the one the next night night at the same location and venue were Led Zeppelin's first performances live since 1977-07-24 in Oakland, California.  So this show was their first concert in two years (minus one day) since their last one.

The waveform looks perfectly fine and Silver Rarities (SIRA) is known for not messing with audio a lot if at all.  I'm sure they likely did something to the audio but I cannot say for sure.  There is no audio clipping and the sound is very enjoyable.

One thing I had forgotten about in this SIRA two disc (two separate CD's in two separate cases...Part 1 is CD 1 & Part 2 is CD 2) is that this specific recording was obviously ripped from an LP source.  These light pops can be fixed in most case but I left this recording "as is".  The pops heard are not very bad and are more noticeable in between songs when there is no music playing.  You can still hear small pops in the music sections too however throughout various parts of the show.  But seriously, they are not horrible or like a "snap, crackle, & pop" kind of listening that ruins the show because it is so bad.

There are a few short cuts in the audio like the transition between "Since I've Been Loving You" and "No Quarter".  You don't miss any music and it is just any talking that may have been going on that is missing.  It may have been a tape flip?  There is a short dropout in "The Rain Song" but the music can still be barely heard in the dropout too.  It is a split second dropout.

There are three mistakes on the artwork.  The first is the date (the show is listed as a day later on the artwork).  The second is the song "No Quarter" is spelled "No Quater" and the third is it shows "Moby Dick into" at the end of the violin bow solo. "Moby Dick" is nowhere in the recording and it is just the beginning part of "In The Evening" that should have been tracked with that song instead of having it be part of Page's violin bow solo ending.  Anyone familiar with how "In The Evening" begins live knows the drums part and that is what SIRA thought was "Moby Dick".  "Moby Dick" was not even played on this night!

The two Copenhagen 1979 shows are my favorite versions of the latter days of the band.  They still played some earlier songs and they still played "No Quarter" too.  Remember, Led Zeppelin dropped "Dazed and Confused" (they never should have) after the 1975-05-25 Earl's Court show.  And after these four 1979 concerts they did the same thing with "No Quarter" (again, something they should have never done).  So two staples in the Led Zeppelin setlist, "Dazed and Confused" and "No Quarter", were dropped by the time the 1980 tour had started.  So this show being shared today is the fourth from last time Led Zeppelin played "No Quarter" live other than in their 2007-12-10 final concert and reunion.

Led Zeppelin only played four shows in 1979.  They were the two Copenhagen, Denmark shows (this being the first night) and the 1979-08-04 Knebworth and 1979-08-11 Knebworth concerts.  These Copenhagen shows are often referred to as the "Copenhagen Warmups" and that refers to the band warming up and getting ready for their two Knebworth shows as well as their 1980 tour the following year.  They wanted to play live since it had been two years since they had.  So they did this in Copenhagen and warmed up as well as got a crowd reaction to their music and a few new songs.

Some of this music is new and it is the first time it had ever been played live.  All four Led Zeppelin 1979 shows were played before the LP In Through The Out Door was released.  In fact, this was very common for the band to do and the LP was released only a few days after the last Knebworth Festival show.

It has been really nice listening to this show again, or more specifically this copy of the show, since I haven't heard it in a number of years.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Journey: 1981-11-22 Inglewood, CA (FLAC_AUD Remaster_2 CD)

This is an excellent sounding show and a superb performance by Journey on their Escape LP tour in 1981.  They were back home in California and I think they were feeling pretty good after touring the last couple of months and at this point having the number one album in the country.

I had started a remaster of this show about 1 1/2 years ago but had to stop before I finished.  I knew this show could sound really nice so I wanted to try and work on it.    I later realized something I had been doing wrong in the work I had done and knew I'd have to start from scratch.  So it was put on the back burner for a later date.  But thankfully, I met another real and true Journey fan after that and he has a lot more audio knowledge and understanding than me and knows how to remaster a show without the errors.  And he did this remaster being shared here today and he brought the show to life.  It is a huge improvement over the original audio we both had to work with and it sounds so much better!  I have literally listened to it a few times this week already.

Fortunately, the audio for this show had seemingly not been altered prior to when I got it.  It had a few rough spots such as cuts in the recording and audience noise that needed some real, knowledgeable work on it.  It still sounded great but it didn't sound excellent.  In my honest rating this is likely considered a great-to-excellent recording.  In my own mind, I see it as superb.  The sound in the recording has a consistency throughout it and is stable.  You don't get the "this part sounds good and this part sounds bad" in the recording.  The taper let the recorder tape and only did tape flips with a few (thankfully not during songs) blank spots in the show which I think were introduced during the transfer.  They've been removed of course in this remaster.

You can hear the crowd but they are not interfering with the music.  Even during songs they can many times be heard.  But it is not the type of crowd noise that takes away from the music, you don't hear anyone talking and yapping throughout the recording, and those annoying types of crowd noises do not exist.  The crowd is excited and so is the band and this forms a really awesome show and recording.

Steve Perry and Neal Schon sound spectacular and clean with a full range of sound in their music.  And the rest of the band sounds just as good and you have no problems hearing the music.  The high end frequencies are really sharp and the low end frequencies are steady and present as well.    I was completely blown away by how much better "techtuts" made this show sound when he sent it back.  He did a job that exceeded my hopes and expectations by leaps and bounds really.

I don't want to overplay this audio to the point some non Journey fan gets it expecting a Mike Millard sounding recording.  It is not without some flaws but it is a very enjoyable listen and one I really have enjoyed listening to through headphones as well.  I am surprised at how well the taper did in keeping the consistency in the recorded audio too.  But in my own defense, I like this show and I may like it more than some of you.  Some, and especially anyone never hearing the unaltered version, may not be able to appreciate the sound as much as I do.  But I still don't think you'll be disappointed even if you're not familiar with the previous copy of the show or even a big Journey fan.

This is the complete show for all practical sake.  There are some tape flip spots where a little music gets cut like at the end of "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" going into "Any Way You Want It".  The recording also has the Journey 1981 intro music playing and the outro music too from the tour.  The taper tried to get it all.  And you don't hear this on many of the 1981 shows of Journey out there.  If you have the officially released 2005 Houston Summit DVD from Journey, you'll recognize the intro and outro music from the beginning of the DVD where the menus are pulling up and the DVD is getting to the point where you can make a choice from the main menu.  I think it's cool sounding music myself.

The waveform looks perfect, the sound is great-to-excellent, and the show is spectacular as is the energy of this concert.  I'm done talking and now so it's your turn to see what you think :-)

I hope you enjoy the show...

This is a newer, non label silver CD's set shared in January by "fishey" over on Dime.  It is an excellent-to-great sounding recording too.

There are a zillion different copies of this show out there it seems.  Some are 1 CD, or just one set from the show, and some are more of a complete recording of the show like this one is.  Some do not have songs like "Sitting and Thinking" while others, like this one, do have that track.

I listened to the show late yesterday and really enjoyed it.  I cannot say it is the best copy of the show I have heard as far as sound goes.  But it is right there with a lot of other recordings and it does sound really nice.  There was no lineage given for the recordings used to make this recording.  The first set, or disc 1, from the show has always been a better soundboard recording.  The recording on disc 2 of the soundboard portion is still very nice but it is not as nice as disc 1.  The mix is not as nice I feel.  It is obvious that someone throughout the show was playing with the sound in various places.  And I have to assume that is what got recorded (their edits)?

The audience portion is very clean and flows perfectly when the transitions between soundboard and audience occur.  The levels are kept pretty constant in the changes and the show flows along just fine.  This show is a great show and the band is playing at full Led Zeppelin throttle too.

One thing has always bothered me with most recordings of this show.  With a few exceptions, most recordings have Jimmy Page's guitar in the left channel instead of the right on the stereo track.  I've never seen a photo of Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones flipping sides and playing a show and I'm pretty sure they didn't.  I don't know if the channels have been reverses or switched or just why this is the case.  But you really do not think about it after you start listening either.  The raw, energetic power of the band takes your mind right off of small things like that and the performance takes you away.

There was no audio clipping in the waveform and it looked very nice.  The "issues" in the recording are not just in this one recording and are in all of the copies we've heard over the years.  They aren't terrible or show ruining audio issues either.  Just having this full show alone makes up for anything that may not sound "as good" in the recording and it is a small price to pay.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Frank Marino: 1983-11-XX Fort Worth, TX (FLAC_SB Remastered_2 CD)

This is a requested artist from a long time back and this show is an excellent sounding remaster of Frank Marino's November 1983 Fort Worth concert.

I felt kind of bad since it has taken so long to finally get this up and I asked "techtuts" if he'd take a stab at doing a remaster on the original audio just to clean it up.  And he did a wonderful job and made this sound so much better than it originally did sound.  And it originally sounded great too.

The waveform looks great and has no audio clipping.  The sound originally was really nice but a little flat and missing the high end frequencies I thought.  After the remaster the highs and all around range of the sound was so much better.  The guitar sounds really nice and things such as the drums are really clean and sharp sounding as well.

I'm not sure if this is the full show or not?  I know this isn't a complete show in the sense that the song "Strange Universe" cuts out at 11:30 (which is also the end of CD 1).  There is a few seconds of silence at the beginning of the next song/disc so this cut may very well have been in the soundboard itself?  "Johnny B. Good" also cuts out at 14 minutes before ending, but it does sound like it was getting close to the end too.

Frank Marino is known for putting on some long shows at times.  I've had friends tell me of shows in the last decade or so they attended where he played for over three hours.  They had to leave before the concert ended due to needing to get some sleep before they had to be at work the next morning.

You don't see too many Frank Marino shows out there.  And some of the ones I have got are not exactly the best sounding too.  That's one reason I was glad this Fort Worth 1983 show did sound excellent.  Over time, I'll upload more excellent sounding shows from Marino and maybe even some "not so excellent" sounding ones too :-)

I hope you enjoy the show...

Stevie Ray Vaughn: 1989-11-26 Austin, TX (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

This show was requested a while back and I'm finally getting to where I can upload it.  It is an excellent audience recording of a Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble show in Austin, Texas in 1989 and it is an upgrade to the previous copy of this show I have had for years.  It is more complete as well.

I wish I could find a record of where I got this recording, but unfortunately I can't.  So I'm not sure who to thank for it?  I do have a partial video of the show too with about 8 songs (some incomplete) if I am remembering right.  And that was shared by "No Pride" in the past so maybe this recording came from him too.  I just cannot say for sure because the original sharing party did not say who they were in their text file.

I'm not sure who was opening for who in this tour?  But Jeff Beck was also playing this night and he sits in on the last track, "Going Down", with the band and plays.  From the poster for the show (included) it looks like Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble were the headliners most likely.

The sound in this recording is really excellent and the waveform looks like there is no audio clipping also.  It has been months since I have listened to the show and many others have made me forget some of what I might have wanted to say about the sound when I first started trying to get the project together for uploading back then.  But I do remember it was a very enjoyable show and even had a soundboard type of sound to it.  I also remember the show is not truly "complete" in that there is a cut off before "Superstition" ends and then the next song begins.  I'm guessing it was a tape flip that caused that break in the show and is the end of the first disc.

The band sounds wonderful in the show and the crowd noise is not bad at all.  Especially when the music is playing.  You sometimes hear in low volume people talking as the show is ongoing but the excellent show makes up for those small infringements on it.

The mix is great with the high frequencies and low frequencies being there pretty evenly.  The bass is clean and the kind you can feel when the music is turned up too.  This is definitely a show any SRV fan should thoroughly enjoy in my opinion.  And it is the more complete copy of the show as I mentioned so there are no songs cut out like in other copies circulating.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Today is the 37th anniversary of this show and it was reportedly Journey's first time to play in England too.  I've had this show for a long time but had not been in any hurry to upload it because of its mediocre sound.  But thankfully, "techtuts" did a remaster on this same source I also had from "scabbyman" not too long ago and I've been meaning to upload it for a little while now.  And what better time than on its anniversary.

This show sounds a lot better than the unedited copy does and there are a lot of the little Perry renditions in it too.  The ad lib type of things he would do or sing with his vocals are really one of the Journey signature sounds.

The waveform looks great with no clipping and nowhere maxing out on the waveform either.  There is a small amount of tape warble at the very start of the tape but that disappears immediately and the rest of the show sounds great.  To me, I look at it as sounding more excellent as I continued listening.  No, it isn't an extremely great recording sound wise.  But with "techtuts" remaster you can hear the band and Steve Perry's voice so much better and it is really very clean.

The show is shorter than many of Journey's shows might have been if they had been in the United States or Japan of course.  They were not a well known band in England even though they had toured through Europe in earlier years before Perry was singing for them.  But this was the first time they played in England.

This is a real gem for Journey fans I believe and it is a show that is a lot more rare in collecting circles too.  Primarily, I believe it is because it was not a great sounding recording before.  But now, the high end frequencies are much cleaner and the band can all be heard without much tape hiss at all.  The tape hiss is almost nonexistent but the high end frequencies are still present and it is a very easy show to listen to and enjoy (even loud).

There are some cuts in the show.  "Lovin' You Is Easy" comes in near the end of the song after "Kohoutek" almost ends completely.  It's a shame because there are some different musical pieces in the way the song is played from what is in the recording.  Neal Schon's guitar solo is a little different.  The taper does not cut the tape player off and on like many earlier European tapers did in the recordings of bands in the earlier 1970's either.  There are also a few tape clicks in the final track "Opened The Door" but nothing real bad and they are just there for a few seconds.  There are a few spots you can hear some tape wear too, but again, it is not a very noticeable issue and it doesn't continue on through the show.  This sounds like a low generation copy source.

I asked "techtuts" what he thought of the audio as he worked with it and looked at it.  He believed it was unedited audio and not "reproduced" or altered like most of the Rubicon work was unfortunately.  So this is really good news and another reason it likely sounds a lot better than other copies I had heard, mostly mp3's (bad in their own right too), in the past.

Even though the artwork shows this is a Rubicon Reproductions and One Lone Duck Reproductions recording, I don't think this is actually from either of those sources.  I think they just made some artwork or someone else put the artwork from that copy of the show with this audio.  Either way, I'm including the artwork I got with the show and an extra copy with "remastered" on it too as in the examples below.

I hope you enjoy the show...

SPECIAL NOTICE: New Journey RoIO Site Online!

I wanted to take a minute and let Journey fans know that there is a new Journey RoIO site online with a ton of shows.  If you've read any of the Journey posts recently, you may have noticed me mentioning my friend "techtuts" in posts.  He is a huge Journey fan as well and recently started his site DIXIE HIGHWAY.  He is uploading shows and all you have to do to get them (free of course) is register and then download.

One great thing about "techtuts" site is he shares both the unaltered (at least by hum) and remastered copies of the shows he works on.  He also really knows what he is doing when it comes to audio and he has made some vast improvements in many shows already.  He isn't wildly EQ'ing and messing with the audio at all.  He understands and has the knowledge needed to upgrade the audio, he has the software to do it correctly, and I've not heard a show yet he has not made a very noticeable and great improvement on.  He's a very generous guy as well and he is willing to share whatever he can as long as it is not the officially released materials just like this site does.

The site is new and if you're a Journey fan it is a goldmine for some great shows.  If you are interested, take a look.  And if you want to register, the downloads for the shows are all available for free.  Just go to DIXIE HIGHWAY and enjoy...

Journey: 1983-03-02 Tokyo, Japan (FLAC_SB/FM BX_2 CD)

Good grief, I've been trying to get time to get these last two discs uploaded from the Calm & Storm silver set all week!  And now I hope to finally get it done this morning.

This is the disc 3 and 4 silvers from Frontiers in Tokyo.  It sounds excellent and is from the FM broadcast done in Japan.  I think this is almost as good in sound as the master cassette recording of the same broadcast I uploaded in the past.  They are really pretty neck and neck and in my opinion the previous upload I made of the same material, which is easy to find here, is a little better sounding.  But you cannot go wrong with either choice either.

There are a few songs missing from this broadcast as you already know if you read the complete audience post for this same show.

The waveform looks great in this recording with no audio clipping.  There is a little more noise in the recording "techtuts" thought.  But the recording has great stereo separation and really has no issues.

Here are some things I noticed after starting the upload and this information is not in the text file.  I did notice in the song "Frontiers" that there was some tape flutter or some sort of issue about mid stream in the song.  But it is a short blip.  And the very beginning of "Rubicon" has a moment where the stereo channel on one side drop out for a second and then continues on.  I don't recall these errors in the upload I made last year and there is a link to down below.  There is also a short, few seconds, clip of the audience recording near the end of "Don't Stop Believin'.  I'm guessing it was a tape flip on the recorder so the label inserted, very nicely too, the audience portion to fill the gap.  I am listening to the show all of the way through this morning for the first time so there may be a few other blips but I don't expect anything major to be wrong with this recording.

This FM broadcast is 40 minutes shorter than the full audience recording is.  Songs like "No More Lies", "Back Talk", "Edge of the Blade" and a few others are not in the broadcast.  And neither are many of the parts in between songs, the instrumental solos, and even some of the beginning intros into songs that extend longer like in "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'".

I'm going to keep this review really short today so I can get the show uploaded.  If you get this one you won't be disappointed I can say.  It is really an excellent recording.  And if you want the previous upload I made in the past of the copy I think sounds better, the one from a master cassette transfer of an off air broadcast (like this), you can find it HERE!

A special thanks goes to "Digital_Journey", "techtuts", and "Steve7777" for getting these discs to me to EAC rip and prepare to share with all of you too!

I hope you enjoy the show...

Journey: 1983-03-02 Tokyo, Japan (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

This is another Calm & Storm label silver CD EAC rip I did Saturday and as with the previous Journey post the label did a great job and doesn't let us down.  This recording is from Journey's Frontiers LP tour as they were opening the tour (days earlier) in Japan.

This audience recording is more rare (and complete) than the FM broadcast copies that are all over the place (including here).  This came as a 4 CD set with the first two discs being the complete audience recording of the show and the last two disc being from the FM broadcast of this show in Japan in 1983.

I've uploaded an excellent-to-superb FM broadcast master cassette of the show in the past and it can be found HERE!  I have not done a real comparison between this copy (CD's 3 & 4 in a future upload...soon) and my best copy, the one at the link, and this copy yet.  But either way, I'll be uploading the last two discs soon for those interested.

My friend "techtuts" has remastered the copy I uploaded in the past and I have not had a chance to upload it yet.  He is also remastering this 4 CD set and I will be uploading those remasters along with his just finished remaster of the previously uploaded 1980-10-13 Tokyo, Japan audience recording soon.

I wanted to take a minute and let Journey fans know of "techtuts'" new site dedicated to Journey music and related topics and materials.  He recently opened Dixie Highway and he is uploading both the unaltered copies as well as remastered copies of the shows he works on.  I highly recommend checking his site out and registering on it.  You can get a lot of rare Journey shows, many I've never even uploaded yet, and he really knows what he is doing when it comes to remastering audio.  He blows me away with his skills and he is a great guy too.  So check out his site here at DIXIE HIGHWAY's index page.

The waveform on this show being uploaded is excellent looking with no audio clipping at all in the waveform and room to work with the audio if you wanted to.  The recording itself ranges between excellent-to-superb at times I feel and it is the best audience recording of this show I have heard.  And if any editing was done to the audio by the label, I cannot tell.  There are some audio issues I noticed when listening with headphones the other night.  But I believe it something "techtuts" will be able to correct in his remaster too.  And to be honest, it isn't issues that stand out or ruin this show's sound.

The mix sounds excellent in the show and Steve Perry is up front and clean sounding as are the other band members.  The mix is a well balanced sound of all band members right off of the silver discs.  The high end frequencies are really nice and clean here too.  I believe this taper must have been very close to the stage.

One thing I really like too is the crowd noise doesn't interfere with the songs and sounds like we would hope it would (not being an issue).  You can occasionally hear a Japanese person speaking in the right channel but it is not often and it is not loud either.  The crowd, as one would expect, is really enjoying the show you can tell between songs.

There are songs and extended parts of some songs in this recording that were never broadcast over the air in the FM broadcast.  For instance, Neal Schon's "No More Lies" and Journey's "Back Talk", and "Edge of the Blade" are just a few songs in this audience recording and not on the FM broadcast copy.  There is a lot more here too in the talk between songs, the members instrumental tracks, and similar things not in the FM broadcast aired set.  I haven't compared my previous uploaded FM master cassette setlist to the following discs 3 & 4 (not in this upload) to check and see if they match perfectly.  But I will when I get to uploading those two discs.

The artwork for this show is great and I scanned everything including the ticket replica and added it.  And I scanned it at 300 dpi too for a higher resolution.  I'm sick of these 50 kb artwork images in so many uploads today and I figure if you're going to do it, do it right!

This show sounds a lot better than I had first given it credit for sounding.  I had listened to a lot of music that night and my ears may just not have been adjusted yet to this audience recording I guess?  The only other audience copy I had ever heard of this show was a lossy mp3 and it sounded horrible.  Maybe it was a different source?  I don't know but this release blows the mp3 copy out of the water.

I have been listening to the first two audience recorded discs as I have been preparing this post.  And the more I listen the more I love it!  I'm almost done with disc 2 and the audio has a very stable and consistent sound throughout the show.  It doesn't seem to suffer from good sounding parts and then parts where the microphone is pointed at the ground and the sound gets muted.  The taper did a wonderful job it sounds like.  And like the previous 1980-10-13 show uploaded, this one was also recorded by "Miracle Man".  He seems to have recorded a lot of shows in Japan in years past and the audio from what I've heard sounds like he knew what he was doing as a taper.

One other thing I like with both this 1983-03-02 recording and the 1980-10-13 recording is the label helps keep the show as complete as possible.  When there is a CD change, they repeat a few seconds of the last part of the tape at the beginning of the next disc and continue on.  I like it when this is done so you don't feel as if something was missed in the recording.  To me, this shows extra attention to detail and I just like it personally.

A special thanks goes to "Digital_Journey", "techtuts", and "Steve7777" for getting these discs to me to EAC rip and prepare to share with all of you too!

I hope you enjoy the show...

Journey: 1980-10-13 Tokyo, Japan (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

This is a show and recording I like a lot.  This is the audience recording of the show "Ljerk" and I worked on the DVD projects for back in 2012.  This is part of the Calm & Storm label 2 CD and 1 DVD set I got the silver disc for on Saturday night.  The information on the artwork is incorrect in stating the show is from 1980-10-11.  In fact, both the audio on the CD's and the DVD are from 1980-10-13 in Tokyo, Japan.

I am only uploading the 2 CD audience recording here in this post.  I will upload the DVD soon too but in a separate upload.  It has 448 kbps Dolby Digital 2 channel AC3 stereo audio and it really sounds nice.  I wish it had been the LPCM audio used on this new DVD but it wasn't.  That seems to be hard audio to find in the SB/video rips.

If you want to download the Bootradr & Ljerk project video of this show, with multiple audio streams and video enhancements, you can download it HERE!  This is not the same video, the DL DVD, from our project that is on Dime.  Dime has some strict rules and does not allow things like video enhancement (rendering) to videos for some reason.  There is also an mp4 high definition version I've uploaded from our project but to me the DVD-5 copy I posted the link to is the best out of the three (DVD-9 no enhancements, mp4 HD, and DVD-5 with enhancements) projects we completed for Christmas 2012.  I am still seeding the Dime torrent for the DVD-9 copy if you're interested and there is a link in the post for that copy.  I've been seeding it for 3 years, 10 weeks at this pint :-)

I do think the video in this new DVD is a lower generation, unedited copy of the show and I like it a lot.  So if you want to wait for it you can.  Or just download both of them and compare for yourself which you like better.  And if you've clicked "Like" on the Bootradr's Blind Boot Blog "Community Group" or are you're a member of the "Secret Group" (Facebook names for the two) you can message me and I can help you download the DVD as if you had a paid account with my file sharing site.  More can be explained in a PM if you're interested.

Now getting back on track for this current upload, this show has some really rare treats in it too with songs seldom played live like "Precious Time", "Homemade Love", and "I'm Cryin'" to name just a few.  And Journey is on fire in this show.  Neal Schon's guitar playing as well as all other band members are rocking at 110%.  And with Steve Perry's vocals and renditions on various songs, well,  it is just a spectacular and awe inspiring performance to me.

This show was one of the last as Journey was closing out their Departure LP tour and returned to the USA to make a new album.  It was also before they had really hit it big.  They had their new LP that was going to blow the doors open for them a year later and they were coming home to work on it not long after this show.  In 1981, when there next LP Escape was released, it sent them into superstar status.  They had a huge following before Escape, but it was Escape that made the band a household name in America and abroad.  And Japan loved Journey a lot and the band loved them so what better place for them to be wrapping up the last tour with Gregg Rolie and before the new Journey music came along than here in Tokyo for this concert being shared today.

This audience audio is in my opinion excellent.  There is no audio clipping and the waveform looks perfect for a future remaster too.  This is the unaltered copy straight from the silver CD's being uploaded today.  My friend, "techtuts", is going to be doing a remaster of the audience recording soon and I know he will make this show sound even better in the long run.  But for what it is worth, this is an excellent audience recording of Journey already.

One of the great things I hear in this recording is the mix of instruments and how well everyone can be heard playing and singing.  Neal's guitar is clean and in your face, Steve Perry's vocals are right where they can be easily heard, and the rest of the band, Steve Smith, Gregg Rolie, and Ross Valory are all heard evenly in the mix.

The crowd is enjoying the show and can be heard but not in any kind of interfering way and not as the music is playing.  The taper had to have had a great spot too since in the video you can see the whole crowd standing and clapping throughout the show.  But you don't hear that in this recording or if you do it is not often or interfering with the songs.  The overall experience listening is a well mixed show and one that sounds excellent and can be cranked up.  It is not a show you "have to enjoy".  It is a show you will enjoy.

There are a few changes in the audio but for the most part it is consistent.  In the song "Dixie Highway" there was likely a tape flip and they added a short, few seconds clip from the DVD audio to make patch things and make it complete. And it is a smooth transition too.   And the final two tracks, "I'm Cryin'" and "Line of Fire" are from this same DVD source it sounds like to form a complete show.  "I'm Cryin'" starts out with the audience tape source but switches over to the SB (video) source as the taper runs out of tape I am guessing.  I guess the taper didn't get those last songs.  Heck, the cameramen shooting the show barely got them and the video is awesome but very unusual as it is a one camera shot moving all over the stage.  I guess they thought the show was over after "Any Way You Want It"?  Thank God for the lone cameraman!

And this brings me to the part about this show reportedly being the 1980-10-11 show.  This is one mistake the label made.  This is the 1980-10-13 show that has for a long time been confirmed.  I knew this was not going to be the 11th date when it was ordered by the parties getting it.  The only night that has ever been filmed from this Japan leg of the tour and ever seen the light of day is the 13th date.  This show has been passed around for decades with all kinds of dates given to it in the video.  Most often it is wrongly called Osaka 1980-10-10 but there are other dates too.  Steve Perry clearly calls out to the audience "Tokyo" a number of times in the show.  But too many people too many times don't seem to care or listen when they share a show that has Osaka on the artwork and the wrong information continues on often.  Getting mad does no good and you just have to make sure you keep your records straight and hope others take it and do the same.  The label does correctly call this show right and being in Tokyo however.

The audio does not look like it has ever been EQ'ed and that makes this even more of a gem.  It is definitely a low generation tape if not from the master tape.  The taper, "Miracle Man", seems to possibly have ties with the label putting the show out.  I can't say this is a fact but he does seem to be who they get some tapes from.  But having what appears to be the silver discs of the unedited audio is a superb plus in my book.  This is what we want.

There was no brickwalling of the audio waveform like Tarantura did on the last 1982-04-17 Kanagawa, Japan silvers I uploaded here.  Tarantura, hopefully out of ignorance and not knowing they were doing it, degraded the audio for that show and any real chance of fixing it.  It can still be enjoyed but they messed it up and that is such a shame.  I sure hope they wouldn't do this on purpose.  But the Calm & Storm label material I've seen so far has been unedited I am confident and either way it has not been ruined by them playing with an equalizer.

This is the first high quality production I've seen in a long time as far as boot labels selling a product goes.  I didn't buy this but I know the people who did and it was brought over to me to do an EAC rip and other things like artwork scans.  The artwork is really nice and professional and the 3 discs (remember there are 2 CD's and 1 DVD) are not in a cardboard case.  They came in the hard, high quality plastic cases made for carrying 4 discs.  The song titles are correct, the artwork is high quality glossy, the case is real protection, and they included a replica of the 1980-10-11 Journey show ticket amongst other thoughtful things like including small bubble wrap cutouts and dividers inside of the case between discs just as an extra shipping precaution.  They didn't take the cheap way out and throw the discs into a cardboard case with no sleeves like so many do today.  And this was just one CD/DVD set I got.  The other 4 CD set, soon to be shared, was done in the same high quality way.

I hope you enjoy the show...

I went ahead and decided to upload the Zeppelin Digital (ZD) copy of this show for two reasons.  Once reason is that it is a first generation tape transfer and the other is it has the higher frequencies present.  I cannot say for sure that no processing has been done on the show.  Actually, I can say it has been processed now.  I see in the lineage it was EQ'ed.  The TLH CDA test makes it look like it may have had some processing done (with false MPEG results) but originally I had thought it also could have been the recorder used as well or some other factors giving the results that TLH (not exactly reliable for testing for lossiness) shows.  But this is a lossless recording and I have no doubts about that.

The show is a good sounding show but it suffers from over-driven bass and distortion throughout much of the heavy parts of the show.  I'm listening via my headphones and PC and I have EQ'ed it to sound much better right now.  So I may have a skewed opinion from this point on.

There definitely are issues in the recording but it also is a super show and it is not hard to listen too.  In fact, as most of you know it becomes easier to listen to a recording after your ears adjust to the sound anyhow.  "White Summer" and "Black Mountain Side", which I just finished, sounded super to me.  And the start of "Since I've Been Loving You" is just the same since I've lowered the bass (and there is no bass in the first two tracks I just mentioned) frequencies as I listen.  I'm really enjoying this gem as I listen and make this upload right now!

The waveform has no clipping and it is nowhere near clipping either.  Disc 1 looks to have a lower volume applied than disc 2.  When "Moby Dick", the first track on disc 2, starts you can see more amplification in the waveform.

The tapers do a little talking in the show but it is not the type that is annoying or interfering and they sound as if they are trying to whisper to not be recorded.  They are really enjoying the show too but they do not ruin it at all.  They sound as if they are close to the stage too.  They also do not stop and start the tape between songs like many other tapers have done and this is a big plus to me!  Otherwise, there really is not any crowd noise during the music and it is even pretty quiet other than hand clapping during the parts in between songs.  The noise level from the crowd is really good (or the lack of it).

Robert Plant and Jimmy Page can be hear very well and cleanest.  Of course John Paul Jones and John Bonham are also heard but the bass is what causes distortion in the recording.  It's much more enjoyable listening if you can EQ the show to bring down the bass frequencies a little.  Keep in mind, this was taped on a 1960's to 1970's era recorder with a 1960's to 1970's era microphone.  Not to say we don't have some superb recordings of Led Zeppelin and other bands from recorders in this era; but this was likely a cheaper tape recorder I am guessing.  But the higher frequencies come through loud and clear and Jimmy Page and Robert Plant (if you couldn't hear anyone else) make this show great on their own.

A special thanks goes to "BK" who in the original text file seems to have made this copy available for us collectors!

I hope you enjoy the show...
