Texas International Pop Festival: 1969-08-30, 1969-08-31, & 1969-09-01 Lewisville, TX (FLAC_SB_13 CD)

This is a large file set of a historic festival, the Texas International Pop Festival, that started today 46 years ago in an area north of Dallas, Texas.  There were lots of bands that were famous in the day (and today) that played this three day event and this was just two weeks after Woodstock too.

Rather than take the time it would take for me to do what I usually do with files before uploading them, I kept it simple and easier to get done today.  I shortened some of the folder names and rearranged a few things to make the paths to the files not as long as they originally were.  You can only have 260 characters in a file path and when you add in the "C:\..." that leads up to the folder you are storing files in, it needed to be shortened to unzip.  When you unzip these files be sure to do it in a short folder name like "0" or something similar for everything to work right.  You can rename folders later after you unzip the files if you want to.

I didn't name the tracks but I did convert them from their SHN file format to FLAC since SHN is one many aren't as familiar with and no program I know of will play an SHN file anyhow.  FLAC is a much more universally recognized file compressing format for keeping files lossless.

I'm going to copy and paste the detailed information file in this download here because I don't have time to retype all of this information here today.  And since the festival began today and I haven't gotten these shows uploaded in the past years on the festival's anniversary, I'm doing it this way today.

Some of the shows closer to the end of the CD volumes may have been lossy sourced.  See the enclosed "TLH CDDA Test" file I included to see which ones failed the MPEG test and may be lossy.  Most files tested fine and not lossy but some didn't.  It doesn't mean they are lossy either.  A frequency and spectrum analysis really needs to be done to see if that is the case.

The sound ranges but most are excellent soundboard recordings.  There are upgrades to some of these shows I know.  For instance, the Led Zeppelin show on the second night has a much better copy I've uploaded here in the past.  But to be completely honest, I've never listened to all of the 10 hours of music in this 3 days of music download.  And not every artist or all of each show is in this.  Grand Funk Railroad only has one song from their set here.  The information I copied and pasted tells how the music volumes are broken up into complete shows and partial shows in the 13 CD's and if you wanted to you could easily put more than one show on some discs too if you decide to burn the audio to discs.

There is a 20 page booklet scanned and included too with images, artifacts, etc of the festival.  It is in its own folder and a cool piece of history to look at.

I'm sure there is a lot more I could say about the recordings and the event, but I'm going to stop here because I want to get this uploaded and most people have probably heard of the festival if they like any of the many artists that played it (especially collectors).

The Beatles: 1966-08-29 San Francisco, CA (FLAC_AUD Master Remaster_1 CD)

Well, since today is the 49th anniversary of this show and since I've never uploaded anything from The Beatles, here we go.  This is reported as a remaster of the master tape which Paul McCartney asked manager Tony Barrow to record.  I've had this show for years and I've been asked to upload some of The Beatles music too.  So this is the perfect time!

It seems it is very cold on this night in Candlestick Park due to some of the comments from the band.

The audio is better than other The Beatles recordings of shows I've heard but I have no clue if it is considered to be a real good one or not.  Since I haven't collected a lot of The Beatles shows and most of what I have is studio outtakes, sessions, and the likes; I don't know a whole lot about what is out there or circulating.

The sound is great but it is not anything hi-fi or superb sounding really.  But imagine the equipment being used almost 50 years ago, take that into consideration, and I imagine this is an excellent recording of that time.

From what "KRW" (the sharing party) stated, Paul McCartney had handed manager Tony Barrow a tape recorder and asked him to record the Candlestick Park show before it began.  The tape was a 60 minute tape and it was never flipped so the show cuts off during "Long Tall Sally" because of that reason.  I don't know how much of the performance was not captured?  But I think The Beatles generally didn't do long concerts (maybe 40 - 45 minutes).  With the recording being right at 30 minutes, it may have been drawing towards the final third of the concert's setlist?  It's strange thinking Led Zeppelin's one song "Dazed and Confused" is longer than this recorded concert from The Beatles.

As for the audio, it sounds clean enough.  In fact listening to "Yesterday" right now I am really liking this recording more and more.  Like many recordings, it starts sounding better after the recording gets starts (a few songs in).  I've always loved "Yesterday" and "In My Life" from the band's catalog of music..  It just reminds me that people who may be bigger fans (and I love The Beatles too) than me may appreciate the recording even more than I do.

I imagine the tape recorder's built in microphone(s) was/were likely used too.  But who knows where Tony Barrow was standing also?  On the side of the stage maybe?  Front row maybe?  Well, maybe not front row because the stage was in the center of Candlestick Park and front row would have likely been the bleachers or seats a good ways back from the stage.  Who knows?

The audio sounds like it distorts a little in some parts but not horribly.  The lyrics, the band talking to the audience, and the instruments can all be heard perfectly.  I almost feel the Candlestick Park audience noise sounds like that fake audience you hear inserted on some of The Yardbirds and The Beatles recordings out there (official ones too).  But I can't say for sure.  Maybe it was added, maybe it's the real audience noise in between the songs where you hear it.  When there is heavier bass cords played that is when you get some distortion.  But again, it is not the overbearing kind that drowns out the rest of the music.

The waveform shows no audio clipping.  No details were given on the "HQ Remaster" the back artwork mentions.  But you can hear the songs and the artists pretty good and the recording is very listenable and a very cool piece of history I feel.  And for being one year short of half a century old, this show sounds very nice.

As I was just adding the lineage to this post I noticed "KRW" claims the tape he got in the 1980's was of unknown generation.  So maybe this isn't from a master copy after all?  But I'm leaving the post with what the rest of the information states and I already wrote.

This Aerosmith concert at the Schaeffer Music Festival in New York was 40 years ago today.  This is a Thir13en Remaster and is really an excellent-to-superb sounding recording too.  This was a King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcasted performance.

The sound as I mentioned is excellent-to-superb and the performance is good.  The waveform has no audio clipping.  But it looks like it could have and it was repaired (maybe in the remastering).  If this is the case, The source is a DR Radio Networks silver CD from 1992.  The audio has very good stereo separation in the recording too.

There was only the CD (looks like an LP) sleeve and the CD from KBFH scanned together as the artwork.  And I'm sure that's what "Thir13en" had available too.  I cropped each making two separate images.  I found another low resolution (actually a few) artwork scan and added it to the artwork folder also for anyone that prints artwork for their CD cases.

Aerosmith is a band I like but not one I am as big of a collector or fan of after their 1975 to 1978 shows.  I do have shows and DVD's of them in later years also, but I think they really rocked the best in 1973-1974 when they were new and before 1979 when they fell apart due to their massive drug addictions and feuding.  And since I have pretty much said what I have to say about Aerosmith in past postings of their shows I have made, I really don't have any more to say about this show other than it sounds excellent-to-superb and I already said that.

Led Zeppelin: 1970-08-28 Detroit, MI (FLAC_AUD Master Raw & Edit Versions_2 CD)

This is a more recent show that came to the surface around 2010.  The show was 40 years ago today in Detroit, Michigan and it is the Detroit 1970 raw source (CD 1) and the remastered source (CD 2) of the master tapes from some Mexican guys that attended the concert coming up from Mexico to see it.

I'm going to be doing some copying and pasting of the original text file in this post and I am adding the original text file to the upload too since it was well written and explains a lot.

All tracks had sector boundary errors (SBE's) when I checked and I aligned them correctly fixing the SBE's.  The log file for that is in its proper folder.

The recording, and especially the raw master copy, are at best good sounding with a lot of it being poor sounding too.  This is a great show to have for historical purposes but not likely one you'd want to have for the fidelity if that is your sole purpose in collecting shows.

The original, raw source was bad uneven and the left channel has horrible audio clipping.  The sound as I was saying is not very good.  Yet the remastered copy, which is a copy that took the mono recording and copied the right channel which had no audio clipping and pasted it into the left channel's position, sounds much better and easy to listen to.  But it still is a poor-to-good sounding recording because the sound was not great to begin with.  The original poster of this edited copy added two waveform images of the before and after view of the waveform and they're in a folder in this download as well.

As I mentioned, I'm posting some information directly from the source information I have and here is where that begins.

"The original (/www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=331301) was banned as it was not split into separate tracks.  When I went to split it, the spectrum view of the wav file looked so bad, I felt obliged to edit it.  Before and after pictures are attached.  The left channel was way over normal levels, so, it being a mono recording, I copied the right channel to the left.  The volume started out very high and gradually came to a good level and stayed there from the start of "Bring it on Home", so I faded it down accordingly.  The original torrent had three parts - the show intro, the show, and the fans' discussion afterwards.  I added the first part to the show and separated an intro track.  The last track started in the show section, with a repeat shortly after the start - I removed the repetition and split it from the show after the tape was switched off and on again (it sounds as if the taper is walking out of the stadium, then it stops and starts again in a quiet room).

Many people won't want the edit, so I've put in two versions -

1. The raw wav file joined and split as described above
2. The edit with the right channel used on both sides and the volume adjusted for consistency.

The music/show itself could still use some tidying up!

"'From the start: "Turn ALL the lights down please"... the excitement is palpable. This little gem has taken a lot of perseverance and a long while to release (comes directly from the original source, friends from Mexico that taped it and has had it in their vaults for forty years!). It is not very often that we hear a completely new document from Led Zeppelin these days and what better place to post it than to DIME, free for everybody to share? DIME has been one of the greatest inspiration we music lovers have had in these last years.

"'This document is really priceless. By their own account: "We went to see Led Zeppelin, but when four scruffy bearded guys including one with a big mane (obviously Robert Plant) took to the stage and started to play a piece that we wouldn't recognize... they did not looked like the Zeppelin we knew and we thought they were "fake Zeppelin". We almost stop the tape. It is lucky that we left the tape running anyway and to our amazement suddenly they started to play something that we actually recognized as from Led Zeppelin... they WERE Led Zeppelin after all... !" That is the start of the account of this genuine experience of what Zeppelin was in 1970. Surprised everyone?

Atlanta Rhythm Section: 1975-08-27 Cleveland, OH (FLAC_AUD_1 CD)

This show was 40 years ago today in Cleveland, Ohio.  I know very little to nothing about Atlanta Rhythm Section (ARS) and for many years thought they did movie soundtracks.  I was wrong.

This is reported as an audience recording but the more I listen to it the more I think it is a soundboard.  The sound is superb either way and the stereo separation if really nice.  If this is an audience recording there must have been nobody in the audience.  After all, how many people could a place named Smiling Dog Saloon hold anyway?  Truthfully, there are very few people it sounds like when they do clap and cheer in between songs.  It may very well be an audience recording and if so it is a perfect sounding stereo one with unusually great stereo separation.

I collected about five or six of the ARS shows shared a few years ago on Dime and I was very pleasantly surprised by the band.  I was just looking for something different and decided to try a band I'd known nothing about from the 1970's.  The guitars are the one thing that I really like in the band's songs.  They are a southern rock with a mix of something I just cannot put a finger on in their style of music.  I hear some Lynyrd Skynyrd with Neal Schon on guitars as I listen to the music right now.  They seem to have a few bands they sound like to me.  But the rhythm and the guitars are what I like best.  They are actually a southern band too I gather from not only the music but from something (I can't recall what it was right now) the announcer says at the beginning of the show before the band starts playing.

The waveform looks perfect in the recording and there sound is nothing short of a perfect sound.  It is perfectly mixed and everything and everyone playing and singing in the band are heard evenly.  This recording has a full range of sound and it does appear to possibly be an audience recording I am noticing the more I listen.  But if I were to just sample it, I'd be convinced this was a superb soundboard.

It sounds as if the songs may have the parts in between them removed or not taped possibly.  One song pretty quickly goes into the next and there is a slight (not real obvious) jumping from one point to the next in the audio.  No music or even audience noise is chopped though.  I cannot tell for sure if this is the case or not, and if it is, it isn't happening on every song either.  There is no tape hiss or any indication of this being anything short of this being from the master tape I'd have to say.

If you have an interest in a superb recording of a southern rock, great guitars  stereo recording I would recommend trying this.  You may be more familiar with the band than I am.  They are talented musicians and I like their music.  Some songs I am familiar with from radio play over the years but not very familiar at the same time.

I don't have a lot more I can say since I am listening to the show as I make this write-up and I'm not familiar with the band and most of their music.  But I do like it and them.  And I'm still not 100% sure this is an audience recording and not a soundboard.  I'm up to "Another Man's Wife" right now and I just want to hear a longer show if for nothing more than the awesome guitar players and the incredible sound of this recording!  The more I listen to this show the more I like it too.  These guys are really good.

I went ahead and finished listening to the show and the only other comment to make regarding the recording is that the very few last seconds of the last track are cut off early.  I'm not sure if it was a 60 minute tape used and the recorder ran out of tape (would possibly account for the cut sounding section during silence I mentioned above) or what the reason may be.  The song cuts off and then a few seconds later you hear a guy off in the distance yelling from the crowd and the band says "Thank you very much" twice.  Well, I'm sure they said it once but about 5 - 10 seconds after the first time you hear a repeat of it again.  Sounds like it was just some bad editing but it sure doesn't ruin the great show.

Lynyrd Skynyrd: 1976-08-27 Cape Cod, MA (FLAC_AUD Master_1 CD)

Today is the 39th anniversary of this excellent recording by Dan Lampinski of Lynyrd Skynyrd's concert in Cape Cod, Massachusetts in 1976.

For anyone who isn't ware of Dan Lampinski recordings, they are usually excellent or superb recordings.  He recorded a lot of shows for himself years ago.  And not too many years ago, he became aware others also liked taping, collecting, sharing, and listening to recordings just like what he had.  So he and some others helping him with tasks started putting his well preserved master recordings online for us to freely enjoy.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was opening on this night for Jeff Beck and The Jan Hammer Band according to the advertisement included in Lampinski's download.  That's another great think he seemingly did.  He'd get some sort of ad, memento, or something from the show that came from the time it occurred and he scanned the images and shared them with all of us.

Obviously, all thanks goes to Dan and his friends that helped get these well preserved and awesome classic rock shows out there for fans like us!

The instruments, vocals, and mix are really excellent in this show.  Van Zant may be a little quieter in the audio than the rest of the band but you'll have no problems hearing him or what he is saying either.  And as with all Lampinski recordings I have seen, there is no audio clipping seen in the waveform.  On the two tracks where tape splicing was done, there is a sharp jumping from one point to the next in the song where presumably audio was lost.  There is no silence and the song just jumps from one point to the next.

Part of the releases of the Lampinski shows was they came with great lineage and artwork too.  This specific upload had TIFF artwork which is a higher image quality file.  But since many people may not be familiar with that file extension or even have a program that will open it, I saved a copy as the standard JPEG file type too and I'm adding those files.  The TIFF images are still there too.

In a year and two months after this show, on 1977-10-20, Lynyrd Skynyrd would take their final flight as many members died in a plane crash.  So historically speaking, this is a piece of history here not commercially available and available to people like us who enjoy the live experience and sound.

At the end of "T For Texas" you can hear a guy asking Lampinski "what's the mic for" and he replies back something about "engineers for the (crowd maybe?)" and the guy asking just kind of laughs.  There is more crowd noise in this show but it is not the distracting kind or obnoxious kind coming from a drunk or anything.  It doesn't interfere with the music's fidelity and is no problem at all.  The crowd was really enjoying the show you can tell!

Someone yells "Freebird" before "Sweet Home Alabama" starts and I found that rather funny.  Unlike people yelling it today at live shows as a joke, this was when it really meant something and people wanted to hear the song.  This is where it all had started in the days.

The Eagles: 1976-02-09 Nagoya, Japan (FLAC_AUD Low Gen_2 CD)

This is an excellent-to-superb audience recording of The Eagles in Japan in 1976 that gets passed around way too often as a soundboard recording because it is really clean and sounds like one in a lot of the show.  But it is an audience recording and an upgraded copy I got over on Dime a while back.

I think I have most, if not all, of the 1976 The Eagles Japan shows recorded.  I haven't done a full investigation to confirm this but from what I've seen available, and from upgrading from the mp3 copies I only had a number of years ago, I'm pretty sure I have them and most sound really good.  But this one is one of the best sounding from this time and tour in Japan.

The audio is a little bass heavy at times but it is still excellent.  I personally don't mind heavy, non distorted audio myself.  It sounds really great on a good system with good speakers too.  The thump, thump, thump can be felt by the body.

I just put this show in on the home theater system to recall anything to put in a review.  It's probably been a year since I've listened to it.  But from the start, the guitars and vocals as well as drums are all very evenly mixed and it does sound like a soundboard recording.  But between songs you can hear screaming Japanese girls (a few are really excited) and other audience noises that let you know it is just an excellent audience recording.

The boot label, Dynamite Studio, didn't track disc 1 according to their artwork.  So it looks like there is one less track than there is on the disc.  Since this was an EAC rip and I included the supplied log files I can see the rip was this way straight from the disc and not later split into two tracks.  Normally, most people track song three, "Doolin' Dalton" and "Desperado (Reprise)" as one track.  But in this case the label broke up the songs into track three being "Doolin' Dalton" and track four being "Desperado )Reprise)" so the artwork isn't an exact match and doesn't even mention "Desperado (Reprise)" on it..  No big deal to me but I thought I'd mention if for you.

There is some slight tape hiss but nothing bad as well as a few small digital glitches in the recording.  I'm not going to make it through the show to report every detail before I upload it and you'll have to download it and listen if you're interested.

The Eagles are really on fire in this show and sound like they put on a stellar performance.  I'm listening to "Outlaw Man" right now and they are flying along at full speed tearing the stage up.  I can see why this has been mistaken as a soundboard in the past too.

Thanks goes to "lolita" for sharing this upgraded copy of the show on Dime last year (2014).  The previous lossless copy I had was still excellent but it was a few generations higher than this copy for sure.  It'd be nice to hear a digital copy of the master recording from this show.

This is a superb sounding recording of the Steve Perry Atlanta, Georgia show on the 1994/1995 For The Love of Strange Medicine tour.  This is one of the better sounding shows and the performance from Perry is just as good as the sound.

Thanks goes to "techtuts" for this copy he sent me a few weeks ago.  I've been really impressed with his audio editing skills, however, this show was left untouched as far as EQ work or audio editing goes.  And thanks goes to "Steve7711" for taping and sharing this show!

The only song that is incomplete in the show is "Anyway You Want It" which was likely a tape flip point.  The taper captured an excellent recording and the crowd noise is not bad at all in the show.  This show has a more full range of frequencies present and it sounds much nicer than some other excellent sounding shows from this same tour.  There is some very light clipping on some tracks but it is not something you'll even notice.  I saw them in the waveform and they were small and not bad at all.  But I'm mentioning them for those interested in knowing.

There are more Steve Perry and Journey shows to come as I get around to preparing them for uploading.  I transferred a 1st generation 1995-03-13 Irvine, California show earlier this year and "techtuts" did some excellent work on the show fixing as best as we could some tape issues on this tape source.  The source has been shared in lossy formats by others (without the errors being fixed) we know and this copy that has been worked on sounds much better.  I transferred the tapes in the 48 kHz/24 bit sample/bit rates too and I'll likely upload that copy as well as the 44.1 kHz/16 bit (CD ready) version also in the near future.  It's a great sounding show!

I have one last request.  I've been searching for a few Journey shows from the 1981 - 1983 Japan tours I really want to upgrade from the lossy mp3 copies I had to get after losing my lossless sourced copies.  I have been looking for the following:

Creedence Clearwater Revival: 1969-08-00 Chicago, IL (FLAC_AUD_1 CD)

As I started preparing this show I was under the impression it was played 46 years ago today in Chicago, Illinois.  But as I started researching it two dates seemed to be the most likely and there were no confirmations of a "for sure" date I could find for the show.

The likely dates for this show were 1969-08-24 and 1969-08-19.  These were the two most commonly reported dates.  Even the artwork, which is way too low in resolution to even use the front art, just had "August 1969" on it.  And from internet research it looks like CCR was at Woodstock on 1969-08-16.  So either of the two dates could easily be correct.

This recording is a good sounding one meaning it isn't great.  It starts off with a few tape stops or dropouts and then as it draws closer to the end of the show it does start to sound a little better.  It isn't distorted really but the audio is mono, it is far off sounding, and it isn't clean and clear.  To be honest, the only reason I was uploading this performance today was because I thought it was the anniversary of it.  The audio does not fall into the poor category.  But it sure doesn't fall into the great category either.  If you know the band's music, then you know the lyrics and songs.  Otherwise, if you want to really understand what is being said in most of this recording, you might want to start off with a better sounding CCR show and get use to the lyrics.  The waveform showed no clipping in the audio in this show.

There was really no information given on this file set.  Ironically, as I was looking for information on the web, I came across a front piece of artwork for this show but in super low resolution (16.5 kb).  The file set had the back artwork in low resolution (46.5 kb) form so I cropped the bad edges on the artwork from a bad job done prior to me getting it and put them together and they're in the download.  But you will really want to find at least the front artwork in a better resolution and file size if you plan to print it.  It is thumbnail size now.

I'm a big fan of CCR's music but in this case I probably will never burn this show to CD.  I doubt the lineage gets much better as far as sound goes.  I could be wrong, but I doubt it.  I'll have to upload some more excellent CCR shows soon for those of you that are fans too.

Don't let my bad review of the sound demean the quality of the performance.  And even though the sound is not great, a lot of people may still enjoy listening to this recorded moment in history.  It's cool to have it rather than not to and wish you could at least hear it.  I've got a number of poor sounding Led Zeppelin shows too.  I want them; I just don't want to listen to them too often.  But sometimes I do and I try to enjoy the experience too.

The Eagles: 1994-08-24 East Rutherford, MJ (FLAC_SB_3 CD)

Today is the 21st anniversary of this superb sounding recording and show from The Eagles as they came back from disbanding and breaking up for their Hell Freezes Over tour.  This recording is a little confusing because it has superb stereo separation, sound, and other audio fidelity features.  But at the same time you can barely hear individual hand clapping from the audience in between songs as well as something else I later note in this post making if have the audience recording appearance too.  I'm calling it a soundboard but it could just be an incredibly awesome audience recording possibly.

It's usually very easy to tell an audience recording apart from a soundboard recording.  Even superb audience recordings have telltale signs that can be heard.  But this one, and I'm listening to it right now, has still not given me a positive answer one way or another.

I've had this show from a 3 CD-R trade since the late 1990's.  However; my copy was not as good as this recording's audio is and was probably from a tape transfer (remember that we didn't have CD burners in 1994 and people still recorded with tape recorders) that was a number of generations old.  This is from a tape source even though the hiss is virtually non-existent in the recording.

As I was looking for a show that occurred on this date on my drives last night, I came across an mp3 copy I had not deleted (yet) of this show.  And as I started listening to it just to check the sound quality out I knew I had to find this show in a better lossless format than the CD-R copy I already had.  So I got on Dime and found this copy with no seeders.  I posted a message asking for seeders and within 5 minutes I had two.  Thanks to those seeders and to "hofzinser" for making this post back in January of this year on Dime.

I guess this recording could be a matrix using a soundboard and audience source recording but I doubt it.  Not only because of the lack of audience noise during the show but because somebody would have mentioned this in their lineage along the way.  Plus, I've never seen an audience recording of the show circulating.  I personally don't care which it is because it sounds so great.  The nix really is perfect and that is another indicator it is likely a soundboard source recording.  I'm really impressed with the stereo separation too and that is another reason I believe it is a soundboard.  But whatever the case is, it is a superb recording and source.

There is some coughing and microphone bumping sound at the end of "Help Me Through The Night" on CD 2 which is very audience sounding to me.  The artwork states it is a soundboard recording but we all know better than to trust artwork for the truth.  There are some slight cuts, as if a short amount of the recording was removed in the audience parts in the show also.

By the way, in case anyone may be wondering why I keep bringing up the topic of this show being an audience recording vs. a soundboard recording is so much (other than my own curiosity), it is because the debate has been discussed a lot over the years.  People have wondered if this show was an audience or soundboard recording for some time and this is not something new I am just bringing up now.

The waveform had one tiny spike in one specific area that showed the only clipping I saw.  Needless to say, there is no clipping in this show in a practical sense.  The waveform drops down a little in some songs and at first I was wondering if there was a two source mix until I listened to the music.  It was just the quieter songs which are the acoustic ones where the waveform lowered and that is 100% expected and normal.

I'm about to start listening CD 3 and I have no complaints at all or anything bad to say about the recording.  I guess one thing would make it a slightly better sounding recording.  A different EQ job could make it just a tiny bit more sharp in the beginning of the show and more beefy (low frequencies) sounding later on.  Don't get me wrong though.  It needs nothing done to it because it already sounds superb.  But if anyone with the knowledge to do it right wanted to improve upon the sound, they could easily do so too.  The mix sounds excellent but it could sound even better.  And there are some small but definite micro-cuts that could be smoothed out.  But overall, this is already a superb sounding recording and show.

I wish I had caught this prior to embedding the audio files, but I did not.  The last two tracks on CD 1, "Lyin' Eyes" and "One of These Nights", are not split.  The label, Red Robin, put them together as one track.  It's no big deal unless you want to jump to the track "One of These Nights" (one of my favorite The Eagles songs).  I remember having "One of These Night's" on a 4 rpm as a kid living in New Orleans.  But that is a completely different topic altogether.  But it is a memory and likely a reason I like that song a lot.

If you are a fan of The Eagles you won't regret getting this show and recording at all!

Journey: 1980-08-23 Largo, MD (FLAC_SB-Video Rip_2 CD)

Today is the 35th anniversary of a Journey show I never have uploaded and barely have seen out there before.  It was their show at the Capital Centre in Largo, Maryland and it was a great performance.

Every copy of this show seems to come from video rips.  And while it really isn't audibly noticeable, this show appears to run just a tad bit slow.  I was trying to synchronize this better audio with a good video source that the audio isn't as good on.  They would not stay in synchronization and that's how I realized this copy was running a little slow most likely.  I don't have time today to try and pitch/speed correct this and it is so minute of an issue it likely wouldn't have been noticed by anyone unless they read this.  Then again, it could be the video running a little fast too?

While it appears there are some great video copies that exist from this 1980 show, they seem near impossible to get.  I've got a 2 DVD copy that is just 5.45 GB of MPEG video and it has a Dolby 5.1 audio stream.  However, it is still fairly blurry and not as good looking as the 1 DVD source.  I'm going to keep looking.

The audio being shared here is a huge upgrade to most audio for this show I've ever run across.  But it isn't perfect and has its flaws too.  But the show is fantastic and the band played a superb concert 35 years ago today.

The song "Homemade Love", one I know of on no other video and maybe on one more audio source, gets played this night in Largo.  And the Departure LP tour the band was on had such a great mix of old and new (at the time) Journey songs making it very hard to beat this tour's setlist for Journey music prior to the Escape release the following year.  I really like how Journey changed up each show it seems and they definitely did so on this night.

A friend, "techtuts", is working on remastering a different copy of this same show so there may be something even better to upload real soon.  In fact, as I paused a while to do some things at home, he sent me the unaltered copy of what he's working on and it sounds very good too.  So we'll see what happens and with what copy soon enough.  But since this is the 35th anniversary of the show and I've never uploaded anything from this one, I'm uploading this copy today for Journey fans like myself just to listen to and check out.

I'm not really sure what the title of this show means and I did not mistype it.  If anyone has the artwork for "Aliving and Departure" please let me know.  I'd love to get a copy and an internet search found nothing at all for it.

Led Zeppelin: 1971-08-23 Fort Worth, TX (FLAC_AUD Unverified Master_2 CD)

Tonight is the 44th anniversary of this excellent Led Zeppelin concert we will likely never have a full copy of.  I have always loved this show and the sound in it too.  It's just too bad we don't have the complete show to enjoy like we enjoy the 2 CD's of it we do have thankfully.  This is really more of a superb recording than an excellent one and I recommend getting this one for completeness (in a collection) and comparisons (between it and the TDOLZ revised copy) as well as quality.  But if you want the more complete show first, grab it HERE!

Over on Royal Orleans, "pernod" posted an interview out of the Led Zeppelin publication named Proximity of an interview done years ago by the magazine with the taper of this show.  I'll post this interview closer to the end.

Note that this is an "unverified" copy of the master.  And in fact, I believe it could just be an EQ'ed copy of the recording from TDOLZ's Hot August Night release.  It definitely sounds great and cleaned up and the waveform looks perfect in this unverified copy with no audio clipping at all (and room to spare).

One of the most exciting Zeppelin tapes to surface recently is a superb audience recording from the Tarrant County Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas, from August 23, 1971. How was this gem created? Why did it take 26 years to circulate? And what happened when the taper (who we'll call "Nick") actually got backstage following the show?
These and other questions are addressed in this exclusive interview with the man behind the tape, conducted by noted Proximity correspondent ERIC VON SCHLIPPEN


PROXIMITY: You were living in Texas in the late 60's and early 70's. Were you seeing a lot of concerts at the time?
Nick: Yeah, it seemed like a concert every couple of weeks and it was always somebody. Hendrix, Zeppelin, The Doors, Spirit. . . it seemed like a constant parade of people, you know? It was a really good time for concerts.

P: The Zeppelin gig is definitely from Fort Worth August 23, 1971, and not Dallas on the 24th?

N: No, no. It's Fort Worth

P: When did you start taking a tape recorder to gigs and recording shows?

N: Early 70's. Maybe 1970 through '74, and it wasn't every concert, just from time to time. I'm sure a lot of the shows I did tape wound up being recorded over later on, out of ignorance (laughter).

P: What type of tape machine were you using?

N: It was a Sony TC-110. At the time it was sort of the workhorse for radio journalists. I had a friend who was a disc jockey and from time to time he would have me go out and do interviews for him. I don't know if it was really intended to record music, it was pretty much the standard for radio journalists. It wasn't really a stealth recorder, it was similar to the mid-size you'd find at Radio Shack. It was about 8 inches long by 5 or 6 inches wide.

P: What kind of microphone did you use?

N: I used the Sony mic that came with it. It was an external microphone, which seemed to work fine especially if you were seated in the first ten rows. I guess it was pretty directional-if you aimed it towards the stage you didn't get a lot of crowd noise, so it was good in that way.

P: Were you usually located close to the stage for the shows you taped?

N: I was spoiled back then. The concert ticket buying scene was so much different than it is today. You didn't have Ticketmaster with dozens of outlets. It was a situation where on the day tickets went on sale you had one outlet in Fort Worth and one in Dallas, and whichever town the show was in got the best tickets. The workers would physically bring in the tickets, they weren't spit out of a machine, out of a computer. So you knew where to go to get the best seats. Depending on who the act was, you either had to go spend the night, or else go down at 6 in the morning. As long as you had a good spot in line you were pretty much guaranteed to get good seats. For the Zeppelin gig I think we went out to a bar until about 2 in the morning and went down to line up for tickets at about 3:00 or 4:00 a.m.

P: So you decided to take the machine to the August 23 Zeppelin show, but you only took one cassette to record on?

N: Yeah, I only took one blank Sony 120 minute cassette.

P: Or else the bootleg would have been a 4-CD set. . .

N: Yeah (laughter).

P: How did you get the tape recorder into the Fort Worth Tarrant Convention Center?

N: I don't remember taking extraordinary measures to sneak it in. I probably just slung it over my shoulder and had it nonchalantly hidden under my arm, or else I put a little shirt on and had it between the shirt and my T-shirt. If they'd said anything about it I would have just said, "fine," you know?

P: At what point did you start the tape rolling when Led Zeppelin came on?

N: I think I began at the start of the show, and once I had taped 60 minutes on both sides, I flipped the tape over and began recording over the stuff on the beginning of side A!

[Editor's note: The tape as it exists begins halfway through "Dazed & Confused," in the bowing section. This means that what has survived is really "side 3" and "side 4" if it had been a complete tape, as the first part of the concert was taped over by the last part.]

P: There seem to be gaps where you turn the tape recorder off between songs. Were you trying to save time on the tape?

N: No, I think what I was doing was shutting the tape machine off and checking the tape to see if it was time to flip it over or not. It was dark in there, and you couldn't really see through the little window to see how much time was left on each side. After a few minutes I would turn it off between songs to see where it was on the tape, and whether I should flip it over or not.

P: After the group completes "Whole Lotta Love medley" they leave the stage. What did you do then, before they came back for an encore?

N: I was always on the lookout for the opportunity to go backstage at these various places. It was easier back then, and there was always a "window of opportunity" to get backstage, which I took whenever I could. They didn't have regular concert security guys back then, they would hire off-duty police officers whom, if they were contracted to stay until say, 12:00 a.m., would at the stroke of midnight look at their watches and say, "hey, I'm off duty," and away they would go! After the last song I take a look around and I say, "hey, nobody's guarding backstage, I'm going back." So I wandered back there, and of course the trick is, "act like you know what you're doing."

P: Did anyone try and stop you as you entered the backstage area?

N: No, the stage didn't extend right to the edge of the arena, so they just had barricades, like sawhorses, from the edge of the stage over to the railing. So it was just a matter of walking back there.

P: Were there many people going backstage at that point?

N: No, I guess I was just a little more savvy in that way, and I was always looking for those opportunities. There wasn't a lot of activity back there, I guess everyone involved with the concert was on the stage area, rather than in the 'dressing room' area. So I get back there, and lo and behold, there's Robert Plant leaning against a door frame, just kinda catching his breath, you know, breathing kind of hard, covered with sweat. I'm thinking, "well, here's Robert Plant but what do I say to him?" If I walk up to him, what am I going to say right after a show like that, when he's getting ready to go back on for an encore? I don't really want to start talking to him about his music like you would in a restaurant or something because it just didn't seem right. Basically, I just said, "nice show." He kind of nodded and grunted something (laughter). He looked a little perplexed about what I was doing back there (laughter).

P: Did you see any other members of Led Zeppelin back there?

N: I don't remember seeing anyone else. When I heard the music starting up I was headed back towards the front when this guy confronted me, I had no idea who he was, and said, "what are you doing with that?" referring to the tape recorder! He was an English guy, long hair, mustache, not really a big guy. I think he was part of Zeppelin's touring company.

P: At that point you immediately shut the tape machine off. What did you say to him?

N: I just made an excuse about planning to interview the band afterwards to ask them what they thought of the show. And I just kinda kept walking, I didn't hang around to give him any long explanation or to be questioned any further.

P: Was he making an attempt to follow you?

N: No, I don't remember that, 'cause I made it back out OK.

P: You went back out front and resumed taping the encore "Communication Breakdown," which you cut after a couple of minutes. Why was that?

N: I think I realized at that point that I was taping over a lot of good stuff from the beginning of the concert, and that I would rather have that than the end of the show. Then I just went home. We would just replay and re-live the concert for the next week or, until the next concert came to town, then the tape would go in the drawer!

P: So where were these tapes stored for the last 26 years?

N: They were in a storage shed for a while, or else they'd move with me, or they'd be in a closet, or a cabinet. Many of them were not even marked, but there were always in their cases, never exposed to sunlight or anything, always at room temperature, which I think is one thing that helped preserve them.

P: How long had it been since you'd brought that particular Led Zeppelin tape out and listened to it?

N: Probably 15 years!

P: In all these years since you recorded the show, did you ever think you had such a rare and important piece of Led Zeppelin's history in your possession?

N: I knew I had the tape, but I never participated in any forum or talked to serious Led Zeppelin fans to know that anyone was even interested. I figured it was just a recording of Zeppelin on a night that they had replicated all over the world at similar concerts. I thought everyone would be satisfied with what was already available!


Here is a sample I quickly put together tonight with some photos I shot of the moon overnight and "Stairway To Heaven" from this recording put to a slideshow with all kinds of transitions.  The photos were not even looked at by me before I made the project and I just added them all including the good, the bad, and the blurry.  It has of coursed been "dumbed down"
(both video and audio) by YouTube's conversion processing and the audio, even though I built the project using PCM audio, will have been converted to a lossy audio by YouTube.  And that's why they call it a sample.
