Led Zeppelin: 1972-10-05 Nagoya, Japan (FLAC_AUD Sources 3 & 4 Mix_2 CD)

This one is coming a day before its 42nd anniversary because I will be busy tomorrow and may not have time to make an upload. This is an excellent copy, using sources 3 and 4, of the Nagoya 1972 show. This was the last show before Zeppelin took a few days break to come back and finish off the rest of the Japan leg of this tour.

I just got this recording recently and it really sounds nice. It has more of the high frequencies present which also leads to more hiss in it. The sound is great-to-excellent, but there are some tape anomalies and an overabundance on what I think is tape noise. But the show is easy to listen to and enjoy and the noise doesn't necessarily ruin the show. But the noise does take it from a superb recording to a great-to-excellent one. Source 1 is the primary source used and of course it sounds better. But source 2 is used at the beginning of "Dazed and Confused" and for the final encores which are the final two tracks.

The previous night, in Osaka, Led Zeppelin played "The Crunge" without Robert Plant singing in the song about midstream during "Dazed and Confused". They do the same thing this night too in Nagoya. It has real high energy and rocking sound to it the way they did this. I can only imagine how it must have sounded live and up front in the venue. Also, there's kind of a funny moment as Plant is getting to the last ",,,and she's buying..." in "Stairway to Heaven" when someone screams real loud from the audience. It sort of stops Plant for a second, you think he's going to say something, but then he continues on ending the song. It's sort of a funny, different, and an unusual moment captured.

I'm in an uploading kind of mood today and I'm considering uploading the Source 1 master and unknown generation Source 2 mix by "weedwacker" today too. Let me see what I can do. I'm waiting for the cable and internet repairman to come out here and take a look at an e-mail and sporadic cable internet and TV issue I've been having. He may show up and cut service before knocking on the door. So I want to get the show I'm uploading now uploaded first before I do anything else. And if I have the time, I should be able to upload the other sources I mentioned.

Led Zeppelin: 1972-10-04 Osaka, Japan (FLAC_AUD Source 2 Master_1 CD)

Here's another show, or actually part of a show, from 42 years ago today by Led Zeppelin. I uploaded the show last year but this year I'm uploading a great partial recording that exists. I'm not sure what the story is here? I have no idea if the taper only taped part of the show, if the other tapes got ruined, if someone is hoarding the tapes, or what the reason may be for just having this partial recording. But I'm glad we do! There are a few sources for this show. And this is reported as source 2 of those sources.

Reportedly, there are at least three sources for this show and this partial "source 2" doesn't match the description I go by for source 1, 2, or 3. So I'm not sure if the further information I found when I researched after this post earlier this morning is up-to-date? It was from 2009 and I believe I got this copy here I'm sharing in 2011. If I find out any updated information I'll make an update and post it.

It's obvious this recording starts in the second half of the show. I hope there is more to this source 2 recording that surfaces. I did some research on this specific copy but did not find much info I already didn't know.

There is a second, "sound enhanced", disc that came with this first disc. It is the same exact setlist except the "Whole Lotta Love" medley is broken up into the individual pieces (as tracks) Led Zeppelin does in the song. That is likely where the "group project" part of this 2 CD set come into play because CD 1 is reportedly unaltered from the master source. Personally, I think the unaltered disc I'm uploading sounds best. I've heard some other shows done by "A Personal/Group Project" that were great upgrades. But this one was no that way to me. I can always upload CD 2 if anyone wants it. Just leave a comment and let me know and when I see it I can add it or make a new post with it.

Rush: 1977-12-10 Hollywood, FL (FLAC_AUD 1st Gen_2 CD)

This is an excellent show from Rush on their tour not too many good recordings exist (so far) from. This was Rush's A Farewell To Kings Tour, also known as the "Drive 'Til You Die Tour" too. The band had just finished their All The World's A Stage Tour on 1977-06-13 and were back on the road again with their A Farewell To Kings Tour by 1977-08-23 (or a little over two months later) which went through 1978-05-28 when they finally took a few months break. Looking at their tour dates from previous and post tours around this show, I can easily see why the tour had the band calling it the "Drive 'Til You Die Tour" too :-)

For some reason, the taper did not record the final song of the night which was the encore song "Cinderella Man". What a terrible shame! That is not a common live song. I'm a little rusty on Rush dates and songs right now (I've been concentrating so much on my Zeppelin lately), but I do know "Cinderella Man" isn't heard live very often if at all. I'll have to research a little more and update if I can find a date "Cinderella Man" was played because I seem to recall it was recorded at some point in some show I have.

The audio sounds really excellent in this Florida venue too. There are a few small tape problems but they soon fade and the recording is very enjoyable. As the person I got this show from had noted, it sounds a little distant but it is really clear and the band can be heard very easily and clearly too.

I have some other 1977 Rush shows that also sound great and I will be uploading some of them before long. I think I may have uploaded one a year or two ago already. This is a lovely show from my listening through headphones and my PC's Bose speakers (the $100 kind...not the $100's or $1000's type mind you) and I'm preparing it right now for a transfer to CD-R's and plan to be cranking it up in the next hour or two.

By the way; in case you're wondering what makes this the Platinum Edition as opposed to the first Canadian Bacon release that wasn't platinum. it is the lineage and better sound. I don't know what the lineage was on the first circulated version. And with the lack of real detail on this lineage currently, the only thing I do know is it was sourced from the master (which has been lost) and it is a first generation, cleaner and better sounding transfer of the audio and is an upgrade. So now you know as much as me now.

Complete show minus audience cheering missing on sources used here, no Plantations are missing. Source 1 is from a privately cut acetate and is the only source that contains the complete opening announcement by Goro Itoi. Source 2 is the recording used for the Explosion (Flagge) release. Source 3 is the recording used for the Live At The Big Hall Budokan Hall Oct 3 1972 (TDOLZ) release.

It still amazes me today that we can listen to an excellent sounding concert performed and recorded almost half a century ago! This is a testament as to how serious Led Zeppelin collectors are about their music and the lengths they will go to in order to preserve and maintain the music and the quality of the music as well. And it wasn't as easy recording a show 40 years ago either due to large equipment needed to record as well as the threat of getting caught being that your gear might get smashed by whoever found you recording (especially if it was Peter grant). Those were the days as they say!

Led Zeppelin: 1973-07-06 Chicago, IL (FLAC_SB_3 CD)

This is an excellent sounding show that I haven't heard in a long, long time until today! I forgot just how excellent this show is. The band starts off a little rusty sounding but quickly gets it into gear and takes off roaring.

Midas Touch, the label, uses the STB sourced material that includes the 1990 upgraded audio. STB had surmised that a previous and purposeful copy had been put out prior to the better audio and that whoever circulated it made it a lesser quality copy. The first 8 tracks, while still sounding great, are not as good as the last 7 which get a lot cleaner. Right as "The Rain Song" starts and on through the end of the show, the audio is much better. It is the STB found source that was not available before 1990 when he was able to get it from a guy that was not even a Zeppelin fan. It was suppose to be the master he got his copy from and he decided to play it safe and call it a 3rd generation copy rather than a lower one. Either way, both audio sources are low generation copies and one is just better sounding.

As I listen to "Dazed and Confused" right now, it is blowing me away. The band just keeps going and going and Jimmy Page just keeps making up new music as they go along feeding off of each others playing. I really don't know how John Paul Jones keeps his fingers going on the bass either; but he does. This Midas Touch copy seems to be very close to the STB copy except they seem to have given the bottom end a little boost and I like that in this case. It sounds very well mixed to me and as if very little mixing was really done to the source material. The audio is nowhere near being clipped either in this show. Boot labels have a tendency to clip audio by EQ work and amplifying shows often but they didn't on this one.

I uploaded the soundcheck for 1973-07-06 too a while back. But it sounds nothing like this show in musical style. Both are excellent in sound and musicianship. But they are like night and day in the type of music being played. Do a search for "1973-07-06" and scroll down to the soundcheck. You can read what I mean even though you really need to hear it to get the full understanding.

I canot find my 1999 high resolution scans of the artwork from the Second City Showdown silver CD's right now. So I am using the lower resolution artwork from the great RambleOnZep.com site and adding it. If I can find the high resolution scans I'll go ahead and add them in a separate link later.

Led Zeppelin: 1975-01-20 Chicago, IL (FLAC_AUD 2nd Gen_2 CD)

I almost uploaded the only copy I had of this show at the time yesterday, but I'm glad I didn't get to. First off, I'm not sure the Silver Rarities (SIRA) copy I have had is even from 1975-01-20 Chicago anymore. I realized as I was looking and researching the show yesterday that I wasn't finding much information. It made me think the show was either rare (and it is) or had a wrong date (and it does in part) to it. Thankfully, over on R-O I was able to get some help and get a better sounding, lower generation copy too.

This show has a long line of being doubtful and questioned as to its authenticity. But it seems that finally, and a number of years ago too, it was confirmed to be 1975-01-20 for sure. However, there are some problems with mixed in 1975-01-21 parts and even the song "How Many More Times" is reportedly from the 21st.

A Royal Orleans moderator made an update on the posting for the 20th vs. the 21st dates. Here is what he said:

"Mod Note 2008: the recent discovery of an alternate source for the January 20 Chicago show sourced from 1st gen Cassettes revealed that HMMT is actually from the January 21 show as it wasn't played this day, the Introduction up to 2:44 into Rock And Roll and the introduction of STH are most probably from the January 21 show as well."

I was going to leave "How Many More Times" out of this upload at first, but rather than do that I left it in just in case it somehow is found to actually be from the 20th.

I was listening to the transition between "Mony Dick" and "How Many More Times" on this recording and heard something interesting. Near the end of "Moby Dick", Robert Plant is saying something I really do not completely understand. But I can hear him say something about "last night". There is a cut in the tape right before this point and after "Mony Dick" is over. The part where the cut picks up, still in the "Moby Dick" track, is part of the "How Many More Times" track really it sounds like. And even though Plant could be saying "I ate a cheeseburger 'last night'", it still tends to sound like he's referring to the show in Chicago possibly from "last night" and that would have to mean he was talking about the 20th and it was recorded on the 21st. It's not really proof unless we can understand what Plant is saying and he is referring to the 20th show.

There are two rare songs on this recording that too. "When The Levee Breaks" and "The Wanton Song", played on 1975-01-12 in Brussel's warmup show, were played. I'm still trying to determine if some of the Chicago 1975 shows I have are listed with the right date and I do not know how many times Zeppelin played the songs for sure in Chicago in 1975. But it looks like "When The Levee breaks" was played on the 20th and 21st but not on the 22nd in Chicago and songs like it, "The Wanton Song", and "How Many More Times" were played a few more times at least in this first month of the 1975 tour.
