Led Zeppelin: 1970-09-02 Oakland, CA (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

Here's a show I don't see too often but one that has been out in the trading circles for decades. It's an excellent recording of a Led Zeppelin show from Oakland Coliseum in 1970 and it was jut two days before the superb 1970-09-04 recordings of the band's LA Forum show (aka Blueberry Hill) were made. I haven't heard this show in years myself. But as I was looking around on a PC last night I came across it again and was listening to it for a while. So I decided to go ahead and upload it here today. I really love these California setlists that were short lived on Led Zeppelin's 1970 tour.

The show starts out a little muffled as the taper seems to be getting the levels right and things set up, but it soon improves. The recording has an excellent range of sound. In other words, it's not all distorted with too much bass or too much high end and flat sounding. But it does have some slight distortion on some of the heavier parts and I'm thinking that is a result of the taper's equipment used. I can't say for sure because I don't know what Electric Magic did to the show before they pressed it to silver discs. But I did notice the waveform looked like the audio was likely amplified with some clipping (kind of like "going out of bounds"). Whether the original taper did this or the label did, I really can't say. But labels are notorious for doing this type of thing too as they mess with the sound before they press their discs. But it still is an great-to-excellent recording of another superb performance and one any Zeppelin fan should enjoy a lot.

I have another copy of this show titled "Two Days Before" from the Silver Rarities label. I got it in the 1990's in a CD trade and really loved it too. I haven't compared it yet to the version I'm uploading here, but from what I remember they both seem to sound about the same and are likely from the same source. I'll find "Two Days Before" when I have time and be sure they're the same source. And if it winds up being there is any improvement in "Two Days Before" or if it is from another source (I'm not sure how many sources there may be at this time), I'll upload it too.

Led Zeppelin: 1970-03-27 Los Angeles, CA (FLAC_AUD Source 2 & 1 Mix_2 CD)

This is a source 2 and source 1 mix of the show I've uploaded source 1 & 2 of independently. I start off in the title with "Source 2" due to the fact it is the primary source for this mix. Source 1 is used to fill in the missing songs not on source 2. I have a sneaky suspicion that the missing tracks from source 2 likely exist but have never been publicly shared (they're being hoarded). Of course, I have no proof of this and it's just something I think. But who goes to a Led Zeppelin show and doesn't record "Bring It On Home", "Since I've Been Loving You", or any songs they have the tape to record?

I'm going with the EVSD mix here for a few reasons. Even though it looks like they've clipped some audio in their amplification of the show, it does have a better sound and the channels seem to be balanced. I was comparing the EVSD version to the non-clipped audio on the Cyanine label's The Four Survivors and the Cyanine version just isn't as good sounding to me. Cyanine uses the source 2 recording as the main audio with the patched audio being source 1. From what I understood on the EVSD Everybody Feel Alright release being uploaded here, it was suppose to be using source 1 as the main audio with source 2 being the patched audio. But it doesn't seem to be the case. Source 2 seems to be the primary audio on both releases with source 1 still being used as the patched audio.

I should have at least two other recordings of this show not available right now (until I can get 6 TB of data restored and find them). I also have an old trade day's 1990's CD-R copy too that is likely source 1. But the effort and time it'll take to look for the CD-R copy is not what I'm willing to spend right now and I doubt it'd be any better than what I'm uploading too.

Led Zeppelin: 1970-03-27 Los Angeles, CA (FLAC_AUD Source 2, 2nd Gen Reel_2 CD)

I uploaded the source 1 recording of this same show yesterday. It is a longer length recording but doesn't sound as good (a general consensus) as this source 2 recording. Source 2 is not a superb sounding source itself. But it does have a more full range sound in it and it has more lower frequencies present adding to a more natural (bass) sound.

As far as I have read and know, there are just two sources for this show that have surfaced over the years. I'd thought there were a few more. But it turn out all of the other recordings are really just compilations and mixes of these two sources.

I personally like both sources. I like to hear the music of Led Zeppelin even if it doesn't sound like it was created in a studio. I enjoy the raw, recorded atmosphere of the band and their live shows. Some may think source 1 sounds better than source 2 and vice versa. You have to be your own judge of which you like better. And that's one reason I'm putting up source 2 right now...so you can compare.

Source 2 is missing a few songs in it that Source 1 has. "Bring It On Home", "White Summer", "Black Mountain Side", and "Since I've Been Loving You" are not on this source 2 recording. And that brings me to my next point. I'll likely upload the source 2 (primary audio) and source 1 (filler/missing audio) mix next. It makes for a much more complete show. I have at least two renditions of the two sources mix, and after comparing them closely, I'll upload what I think is the better of the two probably.

There are some interesting notes from "Doinker" on the songs "How Many More Times" and "Whole Lotta Love" that merit reading. Rather than reword what has already been written (sort of like plagiarism, right?), I'll copy and paste the exact text for you to read.

Doinker's Notes:"What sets this show apart is the fact that the great blues medley has been stripped from "Whole Lotta Love" and is now part of "How Many More Times". Also, there's that organ playing throughout the concert. "WLL" actually includes an organ solo (imagine that one!) During "HMMT", Robert Plant stops the concert dead to lead the audience in a rendition of "I Got You In The Sights Of My Loving Gun". The version of "WLL" is the closest to the album version I've ever heard (but it's not really that close because of the organ)."

To be honest with everyone, I haven't even checked out "Doinker's" statement myself yet. But after I get this show/source uploading, you can bet I will be listening to both "How Many More Times" and "Whole Lotta Love" from source 2 again :-)

And I have one last note to make myself in an effort to keep people happy here. I may use the term "remaster" a little more loosely than some others do? In fact, at times I have a hard time determining what others consider to be a remastering or just a reworking. "Doinker" obviously didn't alter the sound of the audio by EQ'ing it or it would be in the lineage. But he did balance the audio making it even in each channel (left and right channels...your left and right speakers). I do the same thing when it is needed. I consider this to be remastering since it alters the original audio. It is an improvement over the original recording's unbalanced audio and makes for a balanced listening experience. Is this truly a "remaster"? I don't know, but I think it is. So if you disagree, keep this in mind and please don't get offended by our difference in opinion (no matter what the truth is) and complain about it.

The bottom line is that the audio was not equalized (EQ'ed) or altered to sound different than it originally did when it was recorded. But the recording was balanced so each channel is equal in output and it doesn't sound like the left or right side speakers/channel is louder or quieter than the other. It'll help you not fall over to the left or right as you listen too :-)

Here's the great source 1 audience recording of Led Zeppelin's gig on 1970-03-27 in Inglewood, California. I saw that a friend of Zeppelin music was looking for it, I had it fortunately, so I'm uploading it.

There a re a number of sources for this show. This isn't the best sounding source either. But it is the source 1 audio recording of this historic Led Zeppelin concert and I like it too! There are a few Source 1/Source 2 and similar mixes out there. But from my understanding, this is strictly the Source 1 audio and nothing else added or taken away.

As I mentioned already, this isn't the best sounding source for this date. But it is very enjoyable and a different perspective on being in the audience on this night in 1970. I'll likely add another 1970-03-27 multiple source mix recording that sounds much better and is from different sources of this same show too when I get a chance. I need to compare them again and find what I like best overall :-)

I've created a folder for the original EAC rip log files and put them in there. I don't really have much to add right now, and I'll update if I do. I'll likely listen to this show again for the first time in years as I clean my house today (Sunday). I have to have something give me some 'get up and go" as I clean... :-)

Bad English: 1989-10-30 San Diego, CA (FLAC_AUD Master_2 CD)

This is an excellent capture of the Bad English show in San Diego, California in 1989. Thanks goes to Brian Emery for capturing and releasing this show!

For those who aren't familiar with Bad English, they were a band fronted by many Journey members in a time when Journey had disappears (1987) and nobody knew when the next Journey LP was going to happen. Turned out being the next Journey album (or CD) was released in 1996 as the band members reunited to make Trial By Fire.

Bad English had present Journey members Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain in the band as well as future Journey drummer (and current too) Deen Castronovo.

An earlier transfer had been made by Brian in 1989 as he traded with other traders with it. But this is a fresh transfer (2010) from the master cassette.

I never listened much to Bad English. I knew the songs from the radio, but since the songs didn't sound like Journey songs, I just wasn't too interested in the music. And even today, it really isn't my 'cup of tea' too much. But I do enjoy it a lot more, and with such excellent sound and work by the taper, I'll definitely become more familiar with this recording as I crank it up later this weekend.

Here's a copy and paste of Brian's notes:
"This recording has been circulating since '89 however this version is a new master cassette transfer from my original analog master tape (Feb. 2010).

Here's one from the short lived Bad English. This show was at a club called the Bacchanal which was a pretty nice club except for this show. They packed so many people in there for this it was just crazy. I don't know if the Bacchanal still exists but i saw tons of shows there in the 80's and 90's,in fact it's only one of two places I've been caught taping a show, I got nailed doing Paul Stanley in '89 about 20 minutes into the show, bummer because I've never seen that show in the boot world."

I've not done anything other than test for lossiness, add my "Bootradr's TLH CDDA Test" text file to show the test results, and I checked for any sector boundary errors (SBE's) and there were none. This is an "as is" recording I'm making a fast upload of for anyone interested in it.

Led Zeppelin: 1977-06-23 Inglewood, CA (FLAC_AUD 1st Gen 2 Sources_3 CD)

Here's a show recently requested here and it is a superb one too. The Inglewood 1977 (LA Forum) shows are likely some of the most bootlegged and duplicated, remastered, etc Led Zeppelin shows out there. There are a lot of versions for each of the 6 nights Led Zeppelin played the LA Forum in 1977. And not only are there a lot of great recordings of them, there are many renditions of those recordings too.

Personally, I've become a fan of the Winston Remasters version of Led Zeppelin shows. They always come from the best lineage and they just seem to be the best sounding remasters out there. There are times where other remasters do sound better to my ears, but in general, the Winston Remasters sound the best to me. And this show is no exception!

The two sources for this version of the June 23, 1977 (just 5 day over 37 years ago today) show are the primary Mike Millard source used for most of the audio and the filler Eddie Edwards source used to fill in the gaps and the first few songs of the concert Millard didn't get recorded. Both sources are excellent too.

The one thing I really like about this specific upload is the high end frequencies and clarity in the recording that can heard. On the acoustic set, starting on CD 2, you can really hear the guitar picking and Plant's voice too much more sharply and clearly than on the other 10 or so versions I was comparing it to. There is a noticeably cleaner sound on the high end of the recording.

Over all, this is a superb audience recording too. Both Edwards and Millard did great jobs of recording live shows (known for Zeppelin shows). Their dedication to perfection is the primary reason these shows are so popular and sought after.

There are tons of Led Zeppelin shows out there. There are a lot of bad sounding recordings, good sounding recordings, and fewer excellent-to-superb sounding recordings. But the Millard recordings that have resurfaced over the last few years in their altered and unaltered (by Millard) forms are by far some of the best recordings to date. It took a long time after Millard's death in the early 1990's for these to surface in such a low generation form. And many of the ones that had surfaced in years gone by were put out by labels that tend to remaster/rework the audio in ways that degraded the sound quality too. Over amplifying and clipping audio is not how it's done. But a lot of labels have done just that and then did a bad EQ job to top it off. So if you're still listening to you 1990's CD of a show like this, put it in the case and give the better sounding copy (these) a try. I bet you will start gathering dust on the case of your old copy when it comes to revisiting the LA Forum shows in the future.

Journey: 2001-08-18 Chula Vista, CA (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

This is an excellent Journey recording from the band's Arrival Tour in 2001. This show was from the night before they played Houston (The Woodlands) and it was nearing the end of their 2001 tour...or so they thought. About three weeks later 9/11 happened and the band was the headline act for a Volunteers for America show in Atlanta, Georgia and in Dallas, Texas. The concerts had many artists performing in an effort to raise money for the victims of the terrorist attacks on America.

I haven't had a chance to listen to this show completely through yet, but from what I've heard, I liked it. It's great to hear the earlier, post Steve Perry, shows with Steve Augeri on vocals. Plus, there are a few songs you normally don't hear or possibly even know unless you bough the officially released Arrival CD when it was released.

The person who shared this show said they got it from the taper that had recorded it. They didn't seem to know any details such as equipment used, transferring methods, or the true lineage. But if I had to guess, I'd bet this was either recorded with a DAT recorder or possibly a mini disc reorder with an external microphone. It has a "DAT feel" to me but I really do not know.

When looking at the waveform, it appears the original taper of the show did a great job of not clipping audio throughout most of the show too (a common and easy mistake to make). It looks as if they have a small, likely unnoticeable amount of clipping on the first disc and that was probably because they were adjusting their recording gear to the right levels. But as far as the overall show goes, it does sound excellent and the band put on a great show this night too.
