Jimmy Page: 1988-10-11 Oakland, CA (FLAC_AUD Master_2CD)

I could wait two weeks and upload this excellent-to-superb sounding Jimmy Page show from his 1988 Outrider tour on its 27th birthday, but why do that?  Besides, a good friend requested this show so I want to get it uploaded today!

This is definitely one of the better 1988 Outrider tour shows as far as sound and performance goes I believe.  I had forgotten what this show even sounded like because I had not listened to it since I got my first copy in the 1990's in a CD-R trade.  But this copy even beats that one because it is a master copy of the master tapes.

I'm not even sure if the CD-R trade I did for this show back in the 1990's was for this same source?  I'll be able to confirm and I think it is.  There seems to be at least three different sources I discovered while looking around on the web for some artwork.  I believe my 2 CD 1990's trade discs are from this same source as this recording.  But there are some missing tracks and the sound is definitely different.  "Someone To Love" is one track I can say is missing.  It doesn't matter anyhow because this copy of the master is a better sounding copy anyhow (no surprises there).

A huge thank you goes out to the taper Karl Lundmark for this jewel of a recording he taped and shared over the years.

The audio really has a great mix in this recording and it is a stereo recording too.  Jimmy Page's guitar is up front, Jason Bonham's drums are sharp and clear, and John' Miles vocals are right up front too.  Honestly; the whole band can be heard with no problem at all and the mix is perfect.  And the waveform looks perfect too with no audio clipping at all.

There are a few spots where the audio drops down really fast and back up again.  I'm not sure what this is from.  A manual adjustment, a 1980's automatic noise leveler (if they had those on tape decks or DAT machines), I really don't know what caused it.  But it is not a big deal and it doesn't seem to happen a lot from what I've been listening to.  There are also a few micro dropouts that have silent gaps in a few places in the show.  But all of these "issues" pale in  comparison to the whole show and the sound of it.  It is an excellent and even superb show.

It sounds like Jimmy Page's comments as he is talking to the crowd before "Wanna Make Love" are cut partially due to a bad connection going to his microphone or something similar.  He can be heard, but before he starts playing finally, he is cutting in and out and you can hear an audio noise.  Since he never got to introduce the next song as he was trying to do, one of the other band members yells out "Wanna Make Sweet Love" as the song begins.  After the song is over, Page comes back and say's "Hello..." as if he's checking to make sure the microphone is working now before he tried to introduce the band.

Jimmy Page seems to really be in fine form on this night.  More so than even a lot of the other great nights on the tour.  The clarity and fidelity of his guitar may just play a part in this too because he can be heard so well.  But as I listened to "Stairway To Heaven" (the last track) first before beginning this upload this morning, I was thinking he had a lot more of the Led Zeppelin feeling and notes going into this performance of the song.  And this whole show really sounds like it has that Zeppelin style to it.  It's not that other shows don't also have this sound or style on certain nights, some more than others, but this night and the fidelity of the recording make it really shine and it's enjoyable listening!

One of the best sounding songs to me in this show is "Emerald Eyes".  As Page starts into his solo the mix is perfect with the bass, drums, and his guitar.  It really sounds beautiful and nostalgic in a way to me.  It takes me back to 1988 and that time in my life.  I always liked that song on the Outrider CD back in those days and it sounds even better today (and live).  Another nice addition in the concert is the way Page plays a little  "White Summer/Black Mountain Side" in part of the song "Midnight Moonlight" and a lot of "Dazed and Confused" in the guitar solo track..

I hope you enjoy the show...

SAMPLE:
YouTube Sample

The video is really clean and nice looking in this show and the audio is great but not excellent.  I'm not sure if the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio stream is really necessary.  The build of the DVD does have the two audio streams with one being 2 channel (2.0) and the other being 6 channel (5.1).  But the 2 channel audio sounded better, louder, and it is the stream I watched the most as I was previewing the DVD the other day.

There are some audio issues.  But you get use to them.  There are some crackle and pops at times which I guess come from the VHS tape.  The video looks like it has been rendered and possibly color enhanced/corrected too.  I wish I could have watched more of the video before making this post but I wasn't able too.  The audio changes a few times in the concert but you get adjusted to it and it really is not bad.  I just wish it was a more hi fidelity sounding  audio track and a steady and unchanging track as well.  I really cannot add any more without more research and investigating the DVD more closely when I have time to.

One thing I like is in the bonus features.  It is the two and a half minute picture/slideshow to a Queen song I'm not familiar with.  It's a slideshow with the audio track (like an audio DVD).  The additional bonus features such as the interviews and sound check are all picked from the main menu of the DVD.  The same goes for the audio stream you want to use.  Personally, I always use my remote control and switch between the audio streams on DVD's with more than one.  But you can make the choice from the menu too.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1971-09-23 Tokyo, Japan (FLAC_AUD Source 7 + Sources 1, 3, & 5 Mix_3 CD)

Yesterday was the 44th anniversary of this first concert ever in Japan by Led Zeppelin.  It was the band's first time playing in Japan and their opening night in Budokan Hall too.  Led Zeppelin only toured Japan twice in their career and that was in 1971 and 1972.  I really don't know why they only toured twice because Japan had a large number of Led Zeppelin fans.  But for some reason, this was how it happened.  They only toured through Australia and New Zealand one time, so I guess Japan was more fortunate than the Aussies.

I'm going to be uploading shows over the next day or three from my laptop and with limited resources as I am out of town now.  I have a very hard time seeing the laptop screen too due to my vision (or lack of it).  So my research and things I sometimes do when uploading shows from home will be at a minimal or nonexistent state until I am back home.

It's strange that the lineage shows testing for alignment of sector boundaries (SBE's tested), but there were a few SBE's needing fixing when I checked them.  I always mention in the lineage that I checked for SBE's at the end but that's just a formality and is something I do at the beginning and end of the projects before an upload.  It probably was something the person that did this remaster did early in the project but forgot to do after things were being wrapped up I am guessing.  I've made the same mistake myself before too.

I'm not sure who did this remaster because there is no mention of who did it in the original file on this set.  I believe it was "ThePetSounds Productions" which is listed on the text file  with "file under" next to it.  But I really don't know for sure?  Whoever did the work seems to have done a good job and the show sounds like a great-to-excellent recording overall.  And the waveform looked fine too with no audio clipping.

Source 7 from the recordings of this show is the primary and best sounding source used.  The recording has sources 1, 3, and 5 being used as patch sources to fill in the missing parts of the show not on the source 7 recording.

I listened to the whole 3 CD set yesterday as I was preparing to go out of town for a few days.  As I was packing and getting ready for the short trip, I had the concert turned up pretty loud and it sounded nice.  The show has some imperfections in it as well as some really nice and clean parts too.  But overall, and in comparison with a few other copies of this date I compared this copy too, I believe this was the best or at least one of the best copies from my initial checking.

I hope you enjoy the show...

REO Speedwagon: 1987-07-XX Oklahoma City, OK (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

I've had this recording for at least five to eight years but still have never been able to confirm a date for the show.  The only information I was given is this was a 1987 show in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and at The Zoo Amphitheatre (probably the venue).  I looked up The Zoo Amphitheatre online and they say they've had live concerts there since 1936 on their homepage.

There are not many REO Speedwagon past tour date resources it seems.  Even the band's main website only seems to show tour dates between 1995 and 2002 other than their current touring schedule.

I did find a resource that shows the band played Fort Worth, Texas on 1987-07-11, Fort Smith, Arkansas on 1987-07-12, and Kansas City, Missouri one 1987-07-19.  If you know your geography or know how to read a map (in these GPS map-less days), you can see it'd have been likely this Oklahoma City, Oklahoma concert was in this period between the Fort Worth and Kansas City shows or in a close proximity to it most likely.

Just as I was getting ready to post this show, "bobobo" got back to me and said he found the date of 1987-07-15 for this show in his resources.  So I am now using this date as it applies, makes perfect sense, and fits.  But just now, I was listening to the end of "One Too Many Girlfriends" and you can  hear Cronin ask "...what day is this...it feels like a Saturday..." (or something similar).  But from the crowd, it sounds like at least three people say "Thursday".  If it was Wednesday it would have been the 15th and if it was Thursday it would have been the 16th.  So the mystery continues for now.

This recording is actually a very good sounding audience recording that seems to end just a little before the show does.  It is stereo and the vocals, guitars, keyboard, drums, and taper (when they talk) all can be heard fine.  I believe the taper was up front for this show.

The waveform showed some light clipping of the audio but it was not anything major or worth messing with or worrying about at all.  The audio sounds a little processed to me but maybe someone else can take a look and tell?  There are times where the sound is heavier in one channel than in the other and there are sound issues that just have to be heard to be explained at various places in the show.  But overall, it is a great-to-excellent sounding show.  The recording sounds like a low generation copy to me too.

This show was at a crucial point in REO Speedwagon's musical career back in 1987.  They were starting to miserably fall from grace and their sales were going nowhere.  Alan Gratzer, a founding band member, left the band the following year (1988) and even before Gary Richrath was fired from REO Speedwagon in 1989.  And with Gary Richrath being let go in early 1989, the band was in trouble not only musically but financially too.

This 1987 concert was when the band was touring on their Life As We Know It LP release and the sales were suffering badly on this release (as well as earlier releases were not doing as well either) and the sales  on future releases only got worse on the next few albums to top the bad sales off.

I've been listening to this show since I started preparing it yesterday and doing this has made a few things clear to me.  The band was in trouble, still able to pull off shows and even please the crowds, but the turmoil was taking over.  Listen to some of Kevin Cronin's talk (and we all know he loves to do this in the shows) in this concert.  He seems tired, says a few things that are really a little prophetic in parts, and he even mentions or implies something about the new songs and sales I think.  The band's music was not sounding bad, however, it was not sounding as energetic either as earlier years and even later or recent years of playing the songs.  Who's idea was it to put a rap intro into "Tough Guys"?  "Golden Country", political ideology and all other connotations put aside, has always been an excellent song musically.  But there is a lot missing (like Richrath playing in the beginning) in this version as the song starts out.  Even though the band was "back on the road again" physically, it sounds like emotionally they were not all there.

It is rather ironic that the main thing Gary Richrath disliked and was worried about in this era of REO Speedwagon's music, which in large was the band taking this "pop over rock" path, was what was musically killing them off and causing their sales to drop off of the charts when this show was played.

It's also ironic that when the late 1990's to early 2000's resurgent and resurrection in the 1970's and 1980's rock bands occurred as they were reuniting; this was also when REO Speedwagon really made their comeback both musically and financially.  But their comeback wasn't made (even though slightly attempted) by playing these songs Richrath hated (the pop and ballad songs taking over when he left) either.  It was  from the band playing the old songs that we all liked and the ones Richrath fought for but lost out on.

We all know it was a lot more than the music that caused Gary Richrath to get fired.  But the battle over the music and then other issues was in large what I feel kept Richrath on his addiction, depression, and downward path for so long.  He felt like an outcast in a band he almost was with from the beginning and he never was willing to break free from the chains that kept him from being able to stay in the band in the late 1980's and early 1990's era of REO Speedwagon sadly enough too.  It was a music a direction, a Kevin Cronin versus Gary Richrath musical taste and control, and the drug addiction member (Gary) versus a cleaned up band the other members had decided they wanted to be or become that was the real end of the best era of REO Speedwagon.

The band almost faded away and then they made their comeback, rebuilding themselves on their best music and cleaned up lifestyle, and then touring non-stop ever since that kept the band a great and powerful force in rock and roll even today.  And I enjoy seeing them live even today because they sound great and play the songs fans want to hear.

This show being uploaded now is really a rare glimpse into the era of REO Speedwagon's history where they were on the brink of extinction and implosion and were losing some key members.  The band members were fighting and not happy for the most part.  And then this show was at the end of an era that the band would never truly see again and the precursor to the era that brought them back to playing what the fans wanted to hear and knew.  I guess REO Speedwagon stayed strong however.  The band is officially 48 years old now and they have survived.  And as all REO Speedwagon fans know, 'only the strong survive'!

I hope you enjoy the show...

REO Speedwagon: 1983-05-03 Milwaukee, WI (FLAC_SB/Pre-FM/LP_Bootradr Remaster_1 CD)

This is an excellent/superb REO Speedwagon recording from a show on their 1983 tour while in Milwaukee.  I want to try and get a few Gary Richrath shows up over the next few weeks  in memory of his passing away.  He led REO Speedwagon on a rock 'n' roll ride for many years up through 1989 when he was let go.  And on September 13th, 2015 he passed away at the age of 65.

As I mentioned the other day in a post, Gary Richrath was not happy with the way REO Speedwagon's music was changing after their album Hi Infidelity (which was the band's catapult from a known band to a superstar status band).  And this 1983 show being shared now is a good example of what Richrath was not happy with.  Even though the classics are still in the show, the new songs many people today still don't know like "Let's BeBop" were being brought in by Kevin Cronin in an attempt to take the band towards the newer 1980's pop and ballads sound.  And Gary did not like this at all.

I really side with Gary Richrath on his dislike of many of the songs REO started putting out after they became a household name.  I liked a lot of them, but some I could not stand and I wondered "what are they trying to do...kill their momentum" back in the days.

Today, I have more appreciation for the songs Kevin was trying to bring into the band in their mid through late 1980's era.  But they still do not compare in most cases to the earlier rock songs the band had been playing and performing live for over a decade in my opinion either.  And the band's album sales also supported Richrath's dislike of the new "trendy" sounding songs too.

REO Speedwagon soon found a balance of both the classic rock tunes as well as the new ones they were bringing into the band.  But Gary was too far gone by this point and he left REO Speedwagon never to return as a member again.  Ironically; the songs that get the most play today by REO Speedwagon in their r live shows and on the radio too are the songs Gary Richrath played on (and many he wrote) and helped cement the sound of when he was with the band for two decades.

This is an excellent-to-superb transfer of the pre-FM LP's via a USB turntable (all digital) and there are very, very few indications of "snap, crackle, or pop" in the recording.  When pops or crackling is seldom heard it's between songs in the quiet parts of the LP.  This LP has been taken care of very well it sounds like.

A special thanks goes to "bobobo" for sharing this excellent LP rip and work.  He's done some superb digital transfers from the original Pre-FM LP's of many REO Speedwagon shows and he has shared each one too.  I really appreciate his help and the work he has done.  Thanks for the help you've been to me specifically "bobobo" in not only information on REO Speedwagon recordings but in other details too in their shows over the last couple of years!

I hope you enjoy the show...

I'm not reviewing this show today due to a lack of time I have to do so.  I can say the waveform showed no audio clipping and having listened to this recording and many other source 1 copies of this afternoon show before, it's a very enjoyable recording.

Source 1 was recorded by Eddie Edwards and is the majority of the show with the source 2 filler source being used in the areas mentioned above to fill gaps in the source 1 recording.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1970-09-19 New York, NY (FLAC_AUD 1st Gen_2nd Show_2 CD)

Tomorrow will be the 45th anniversary of another excellent sounding Led Zeppelin show.  This concert was a hop, skip, and a Starship ride from the West Coast concerts recently shared to the East Coast before the ride home to the United Kingdom..  The last two shows in the 1970 tour were on 1970-09-19 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  And this upload is of the second, evening show on that day.

The band played two shows at Madison Square Garden (MSG) on the same day.  The first show was an afternoon show and the second show, which is this concert being uploaded now, was the evening show.  I'm still not fully aware of all of the details on how this tape came to surface.  But it sounds like it came close to being lost in time and mistaken for the first show from some of what the taper wrote and I have read.

"Darth9neo". or the taper, forgetting or not knowing there were two shows Led Zeppelin had played on 1969-09-19 at MSG had only attended the second, evening show.  And for decades he had known of the bootleg recording titled American Woman (first, afternoon show) but had not listened to it and thought it was the same show that he had recorded.  So all of these years later, he was listening to the first show but noticing things were different from what he remembered all those years ago.  Long story wrapped up, he'd been sitting on a tape of the second show not knowing it.  He stated a friend helped him realize this and it wasn't too long afterwards the second show, the only source/recording of the show known to exist, was shared by the taper.

A huge "thank you" goes out to "Darth9neo" for sharing this gem and piece of history with all of us!

NOTE:
Somewhere is the lineage Eddie Edwards speed corrected the audio and "cleaned" it.  But this information wasn't included in the lineage anywhere so who knows where or when that work fits in the lineage lineup?  I'd imagine it came after the CD-R copy transfer from other information I've read but I do not know for sure.

(1) 1970-09-19 New York, NY (AUD 1st Gen/2nd Show)

There is something special about this concert in the fact that Jimi Hendrix had died the day before this show and Robert Plant mentions him before the band plays "That's The Way".  Plant says to the crowd, "A great loss came about for the whole of the music world.  We'd like to think that you as well as us are very sorry that Jimi Hendrix is dead."  This show was a day after Hendrix's death.  But of course this was a very big topic not only in the music world and news but in the minds of fans all across the world.  Plant mentions Jimi's death in both shows at MSG too on this same day.

This recording was recorded by "Darth9neo" and remastered by Eddie Edwards.  The recording is stereo and for the most part an excellent recording.  There is a little rough patch starting off as the sound was getting set but then it quickly improves and becomes a real nice treat to listen to.  The taper says he ran from the 89th row where he had seats up to the very front (something that you could do in those days if you were lucky enough) and started recording just as "Immigrant Song" began.  There are some points where the stereo seems to fade to one side or the other in the taping for short moments.  It sounds more like a tape issue than anything else to me and it doesn't happen a lot.  It may have been done on purpose too by the taper?  There is slight distortion in the heavier bass notes but overall it's an excellent recording and a superb show.

The waveform showed no clipping either and I think one of the really cool things about this recording is the stereo separation in some songs.  For instance, when Jimmy Page is doing the violin bow solo deal where he hits on the guitar with the bow and sticks his arm out and turns as the lights hit him (at least in the official the Song Remains The Same release), you hear the different left and right channel come alive depending on which way he was pointing the bow in the show.  Even the beginning of John Paul Jones' organ solo introduction into "Thank You" has some back and forth stereo movement between the channels and sounds really nice.  The same thing happens in "Whole Lotta Love".  However; I wonder if this is real stereo or possibly some audio trickery maybe?  It also happens in a few places it shouldn't too.

The crowd is not an issue in most of the show but they are rowdy and can be heard a few times.  But they definitely do not seem to interfere with the majority of the recording or be heard during most of the show other than at lower audio levels.

The recording isn't without some faults.  Tell me many that are.  But this one is a very nice and excellent recording and personally I grade it even a little higher (I'm trying to not grade based on personal likability and it's hard).

The recording doesn't sound as good starting out on the second disc.  It's very muddy and almost as if the microphones were being blocked by something or even hidden.  This continues all the way through "What Is And What Should Never Be" and for at least 8 minutes into "Moby Dick" before it clears up.  It doesn't sound stereo either during this beginning of disc 2.  But it clears up and gets back to sounding like it had on disc 1 well before "Whole Lotta Love" starts.

I've uploaded other copies of this show and date in the past too.  So you may want to read up on those posts and compare the information or you may want to just download this copy and listen for yourself!

I hope you enjoy the show...

REO Speedwagon: 1971-XX-XX Carbondale, IL (DVD_Pro Shot_LPCM_1 DVD)

If anyone hasn't heard yet, REO Speedwagon's founding member Gary Richrath passed away on 2015-09-13 (Sunday).  I just learned of it this morning and I'm not sure what the details are on his death.  But he was one of the best rock 'n' roll guitarists of his time and a key reason REO Speedwagon made it so big in their later years.

I'm uploading a better copy (audio wise) of this 1971 PBS TV appearance on a program called The Sessions today.  I've built my own DVD with menus and cool junk.  But it was not an LPCM audio copy and this one being shared is.  This copy has automatic 10 minute chapters and looks like it was transferred via a standalone DVD burner too.

I am not sure where I got this copy and it possibly even came from Dime?  The text file I just noticed mentions it had been on Dime so that makes it even more likely.  I'll include the original text file too.  I've tried to determine who shared it but have not had any luck.  But to whoever shared this to begin with, thanks definitely goes to that person!

REO Speedwagon, formed in 1967, stayed pretty much the same as far as members of the group went throughout the years with a few exceptions.  This video was shot before members Kevin Cronin (vocals) or Bruce Hall (bass) were in the band.  And years later, as they were transitioning from a more classic rock with a lot of guitar type of band to a more ballads type of band, Gary Richrath did not like this.  I personally like both eras of the band's music but I really like the 1981 and earlier REO Speedwagon the best where Richrath played awesome solos in the songs.

In 1989, after the band decided to stop the partying and clean up their act, Gary Richrath did not want to go the direction the rest of the band was going.  He was upset by the music and he had been getting more and more heavily into drug use which the rest of the band had reportedly stopped doing at this point.  So the band fired him and replaced him with Dave Amoto.

Richrath made an attempt at playing his own solo music and tours briefly, but that was short lived.  He just sort of disappeared from the public eye and not much was heard of him or from him after that.  He did appear on stage and plat with REO Speedwagon once more in 2013 at a benefit show to the surprise of the crowd.  But two years later, he's now gone for good sadly.

This is a superb capture of the band when the lineup had Terry Luttrell on vocals and Gregg Philbin on bass.  The other members were future and even present members that stuck with the band for a long time through the years and they include Neal Doughty on keyboards, Alan Gratzer on drums, and of course the now late Gary Richrath.

I'm not 100% sure who is with REO Speedwagon today, but I do know a few of the early and possibly original lineup is still with them.  And most members have been there from the 1970's I believe.  Either Doughty or Gratzer recently retired I believe but I know Kevin Cronin, Bruce Hall, and Dave Amato (joined in 1990 I believe) are definitely with REO Speedwagon today and they are constantly touring and rocking.  I've seen them so many times and recorded so many shows of them over the years I cannot even remember how many times it has been.

I added a few screen shots from the video at the bottom of this post.  So as a tribute to Gary Richrath, here is an early look into REO Speedwagon.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Blind Melon: 1995-09-12 Vancouver, BC, Canada + Bonuses (FLAC_SB_1 CD)

I wanted to get this show uploaded the last couple of years on its anniversary, and since I missed it again a few days ago on its 20th anniversary, I'm uploading it early this morning before I get some sleep.

I have been a big fan of Blind Melon's music since I heard it and went and saw their second from last concert in Dallas.  After this show, being up front in the very first row (standing room only) and pressed against the security gate by a few thousand fans behind us, the band left Dallas for Houston and then New Orleans.  Just as they were leaving the stage at the Dallas show we were at my buddy Mark stuck his hand out and Shannon Hoon slapped it in a "thanks for coming" kind of way as he walked off stage.

I believe it was three days later when Mark called me telling me Shannon Hoon had died in New Orleans of a drug overdose.  He'd been battling narcotic problems for some time and it was a well known fact.  But he lost the fight, some theorizing on purpose, and that was the last time Blind Melon was in their best form with their original members.

They have regrouped in recent years, and really without any publicity and under the radar, to carry on with a new singer.  And he sounded a lot like Shannon Hoon.  But half of what made Hoon's vocals and lyrics so great was the battles he was fighting with his drug addiction.  It's just too bad he didn't break that depressive state of mind he was in and get himself clean and sober.  He was fighting a depression and abuse problem that he couldn't win by himself and he left this world with nothing but his legacy and one that was rising high as the band had put out two albums prior to his death and a third of unreleased songs and songs they'd been working on in the studio with Hoon not too long after he passed away.

This recording is an superb recording of the Canadian TV program "Much Music" and the last or second from  last video of their shows made before Hoon's death.  Even in the video for this show, you can see he was higher than a kite.  But Hollywood and the music industry doesn't care how much a person is tearing themselves up as long as the cash inflow is coming in.

The waveform in this recording has no audio clipping at all.  I wondered if this might be a rip of the video but the source sharing it states it is a liberated soundboard of the show and it does have that sound to it too.

The last four tracks are bonus tracks added to make a full CD.  I didn't add them either but they sound just as excellent as the primary 1995-09-12 concert does.  Tracks 17 and 18 were recorded on 1995-09-17, five days after this concert, in London, England for the BBC Sessions.  And the final two tracks were recorded earlier on 1993-11-10 in Hilversum, Holland, The Netherlands.

Blind Melon had some of the most talented musicians of the 1990's and each was superb in their playing skills.  Seeing them live in Dallas on (I need to look at my ticket but I think it was) 1995-10-18, it was superb.  But the following show on 1995-10-20 in Houston, Texas was reportedly a huge disappointment from reviews of it.  They were scheduled to play the following night in New Orleans and that was when Shannon Hoon, found on the tour bus after arriving in New Orleans, died.  He had gone on a drug binge according to newspaper articles after the Houston show, even with a drug counselor touring with them to help him, and he went to sleep and never woke up.  So there was no New Orleans show and the Dallas and Houston shows were the very last two.

The band had their own sound and it had some heavy Led Zeppelin influences in many songs.  I'd say it had a lot of Led Zeppelin III in the musical/instrumental playing style.  There are other influences in their music that sound similar to other bands of the classic rock era of music too.  But they were not copycats and they had their own sound and talented musicians in the band.  And they played and made their own music too.

Ironically, the song that made them famous and got the most acclaim was the song "No Rain".  This was one of my least favorite songs from the band too.  I always loved the song "I Wonder" and "Mouth Full of Cavities" but it's too bad these songs weren't included on this night being shared now.  One of these days I will upload the DVD of the show.

I wish there was more excellent recordings of the band available but many are not very good or maybe great at the best in their sound (recording).  There are some other excellent and superb recordings too though.  And I'll be uploading those in the future.  I actually have a few silver CD's of both studio recordings and live performances I need to do EAC rips on and scan the artwork on so I can share them here too.

If you've never heard Blind Melon, I definitely recommend trying out this show and seeing what you think.  I think their best music was the earlier stuff off of the first two albums.  The songs in this show are great but most of them aren't some of their very best songs.

If you get this download, listen to all of the instruments being played and the vocals Hoon sings.  This was a band with a bright future but it was cut short by the drug addiction and dying of the lead singer.  And truthfully, in reality Hoon could not be replaced even by others who could sound like him.  The singer that I mentioned earlier, and I learned recently left the band, has been replaced and they are reportedly touring now.  I have not yet tried to confirm this.  But it makes sense.  But the heart and soulfulness of Shannon Hoon is something that I don't see the band ever being able to replace.  To me, it's like Journey trying to replace Steve Perry.  They have and it is still good and fun to see the shows.  But there is no replacement for him and there isn't one for Hoon either.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Robert Plant: 2002-09-15 Austin, TX (FLAC_SB_1 CD)

Tomorrow is the 13th anniversary of Robert Plant's appearance on the program Austin City Limits in 2002.  I like this recording because of the songs in it and Plant's vocals as well.  He still was sounding like he could have played Led Zeppelin music and it wasn't like the music he puts out today that completely changes the whole song as well as the way he sings it.

I like the song "Darkness, Darkness" and remember when I first heard him playing this one.  This isn't his best version of the song but it still sounds great in this excellent recording.

LIN K:
(1) 2002-09-15 Austin, TX (SB)

This recording claimed to be a soundboard of the show and it may be.  But I have to wonder if it is a video rip too since most sources of this performance are just that.  I believe I have this performance on DVD myself but I haven't located it if I do.  This show was just a year after my eye surgeries and I was still barely able to see.  I wasn't doing any music trading during this time and for about three years was unable to.  So I may not have this video at all.

The waveform had no audio clipping and the artwork I found for this show indicates this was a boot label's release.  I know this artwork is the exact same source do to the song titles and their naming as well as the extra interview track at the end with Plant and his band members.

There really isn't a lot to say about this show.  I like hearing Plant doing "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" again here.  And while the songs do not sound like Led Zeppelin playing, they are played in the Led Zeppelin style and not completely reorganized to sound like whatever he is making today.

As much as I love Plant's voice, I'm not a big fan of his music in the last few years.  He made it clear he wasn't interested in doing Led Zeppelin style music anymore and even if he were interested in doing it, he doesn't have the capability to do it today.  He waited way too long to go back now.  I don't blame him one bit for doing what he likes and wants to do.  I think he should be doing what makes him happy musically.  It just doesn't make me happy musically so I seldom collect or even check out the music he is doing live nowadays anymore.

There are some of the Middle Eastern influences in this concert musically speaking.  Just like in the 1995/96 and 1998 Page and Pant shows, Robert Plant made sure these North African and Middle Eastern sounds were in the music they played.  The big difference here is there is no Jimmy Page to make the Led Zeppelin songs sound as good as they could.

Plant mentions how he delved into the vinyl era of music and put together some songs he liked and redid them.  He's been doing this for the last 15 years or so on his new releases.  Some are better than others.  But this is a good mix of a few eras of Plant's musical interest.  There is no 1980's era songs in this recording but he does go back to around 1993 and then on up through the current time frame of 2002 as well as put in a few Led Zeppelin tracks.

I sort of consider this 2002 time period to be Plant's jumping off point where he makes his move towards what he's doing nowadays.  He still had a few years of some great new songs and then the 2007 Led Zeppelin final reunion in him.  But at the age he is today, I'm pretty sure he's on the track he'll remain on and the songs will remain the same in what he is doing nowadays.

Robert Plant talks about what I am referring to in the last track interview and about his different styles and the typecasting that goes on with his voice and what people expect and what he wants to do.  And I can understand his interest in changing things up and not singing the same song for 50 years.  But I also know that I like the past, the music more specifically from it, and I am looking at things from my perspective.  I'm sure there are many people who don't even know who Led Zeppelin is (well, not many but a few) from today's generation that like his newer music.  But I also feel if he had never been with Led Zeppelin that he wouldn't be selling albums at all today.  So you can't just shun your past that made you popular and I'm not saying at all that he has.  But he needs to remember that too because there are many more Led Zeppelin fans than modern day Robert Plant and the (inset a newer band rendition name...too many to add) fans.  So be careful when you slam Led Zeppelin music and those days in interviews Robert!  It's still your bread and butter.

"Going To California" has a really nice Led Zeppelin sound to it in the way he sings the lyrics.  And so does "Hey, Hey What Can I Do" too.  But my favorite from this performance is "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You".

Just as a side note here, 27 years ago today (1988-09-14), Jimmy Page played in Austin at the Frank Erwin Center.  I believe I uploaded "sean_the_bootleggers" excellent recording of that show here in the past too.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1971-09-14 Berkeley, CA (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

If you enjoyed today's 44th anniversary show from Led Zeppelin's first night at Berkeley Community Theatre that I uploaded last night, then you will completely love this next night's show.  Tomorrow will be the 44th anniversary of the band's second and last night in Berkeley on the 1971 tour.  And both nights were recorded by Bob Menke except this night has a much more superb sound and is the recording everyone knows as Going To California.

Going To California was the third Led Zeppelin bootleg ever released and was preceded only by Mudslide and Live On Blueberry Hill from what I have read.  And of course, in these first bootleg days, these were LP or record releases too..

I've got three different LP rips of the same Trade Mark of Quality (TMOQ) Going To California recording ranging from many pops and scratches to no pops and scratches.  One copy came from my buddy John many years ago and one I got a few years ago and it  was a 2010 rip of a perfect copy LP and a "dadgad" remastered copy.

The best sounding copy of this show is likely the one you can play on your record player and it is a mint copy.  But since few (if any) of us have that option, we go for the next best thing.  I even attempted to rip John's copy over a year ago but was not getting the sound I wanted due to either an issue with the new digital output USB turntable I now have or due to my own not transferring things right.  There is nothing as clean as a great record and the needle in the groves pushing out the hi fidelity audio.  Compact discs are great, but they still cannot truly reproduce the fidelity of an album.  But albums have their issues and lifespan too so CD's are the next best thing to the actual album itself.

The 2012 share (transferred in 2010) of "dadgad's" remastering is the best sounding LP rip without a doubt.  But I am uploading the second set of CD's today that go with last night's show which are the Godfather label's production of this second show in Berkeley in 1971.  It is an excellent-to-superb copy of the show and one I think they did a nice job on.

The sound starts out in mono audio and then changes to stereo after "Heartbreaker" starts up.  This is when it becomes superb and really enjoyable because there is great stereo separation.  And there is no audio clipping either in the waveform.

There are two (one in this copy) small cuts that are just split second types in the show.  For instance, the very beginning notes of "Since I've Been Loving You" start out and then the audio jumps to a point a few seconds ahead.  Don't worry.  It's not a defect with your burn, download, or anything like that.  It's in the recording.  One the Going To California LP rips there is another real short piece of "Dazed and Confused" missing at the very beginning too.  But I've just noticed that Godfather seems to have added a second source (possibly) in place of this missing music in this release.  It really is not even noticeable unless you're listening for it.  In fact, I just decided to check Bootledz.com and they mention that Godfather takes the previous nights recording of "Dazed and Confused" and uses it at the very beginning to replace the cut in the song.  Like I mentioned, it's a short, small part and I really think that was not a bad idea on Godfather's part doing this.

This is obviously not the complete concert as one might notice looking at the setlist.  Just look at the show's length if nothing else and you can see it is not a full show from Led Zeppelin.  I'm not sure if there is more that exists, if it got ruined, or just what the story may be?  There are some fades outs/ins after a few songs as if there was more tape but it wasn't shared or added.  It's not likely that it was a tape flip where these are located because they aren't far enough into a recording to have reached a point on needing to flip or change a tape.

Just like the show for today (13th) I uploaded last night, this one was also recently shared by "jesusnahdi" over on Dime.  So thanks goes to them for both of these two nights in Berkeley in the form of the Godfather label copies.

This is a very enjoyable capture of this night in the history of Led Zeppelin almost 44 years ago and it's one I know you will enjoy too.

I hope you enjoy the show...

Led Zeppelin: 1971-09-13 Berkeley, CA (FLAC_AUD_2 CD)

Tomorrow will be the 44th anniversary of the first night's Led Zeppelin concert in Berkeley, California in 1971.  They played on September 13th and September 14th, 1971 and we have some excellent documentation of it in the form of audio.

I've been listening to this copy I'm sharing today for the first time since I just recently got it.  And I love it!  I'm up to "Moby Dick" right now and the show sounds excellent.

I may start trying something new here.  Rather than upload each show on its anniversary, I may try to upload them a day before their anniversary.  This was I won't be posting a show at 11 PM at night and a day later in places in a different time zone (like London, Germany, etc).  It would make it easier for any of you that would like to listen to the various concerts on their anniversaries.  I'll give it a try, and at times, I know it won't happen.  Some days I don't even get the shows I have set aside to upload on their anniversaries done at all.  It'll likely be a mix of a day before and the day of the historic shows depending on my time schedule and capabilities.

The sound ranges in this show from great to superb depending on the songs being played.  The recording starts off with Bill Graham introducing the band and then "Immigrant Song" starts jamming.  The sound at this point is not the best, but like in so many audience recorded shows, it gets better pretty fast.  I'm not sure if the taper moved himself to a different location in the venue or if the equipment needed some settings adjustments?  But it becomes an excellent and even superb sounding show.  The parts with a little more trouble and some distortion are the real heavy bass songs.  But even those are not badly distorted.

The waveform shows no audio clipping at all and the taper recorded the show without stopping the tape recorder between songs like some did in those days.  The parts of the show where tape flips occur are all in between songs and not during any songs.  Godfather used a fade out method in the audio and after the tape flip and a second of silence the show picks back up with no music loss.

I've only got three copies of this show mysteriously.  I had thought I had many more.  This copy was a recent share by "jesusmahdi" over on Dime and thanks goes to them for this one.  My first copy, Tarantura's 1995 Going To California II, I am doing an EAC rip on right now.  And the final copy I have is the master tape source which was taped by Bob Menke and mastered by "dadgad".  I uploaded the master tape copy last year and it can be found HERE!

"Whole Lotta Love" has a really cool sounding intro too in this show.  I've just finished listening to "Communication Breakdown" which is the last song and end of this Godfather copy of the show.  And it has been really groovy!

I hope you enjoy the show...
