Led Zeppelin: 1979-07-23 Copenhagen, Denmark (FLAC_AUD Master_2 CD)

I had planned on uploading the master audience recordings on 2014-07-23 and 24 of the Copenhagen 1979 shows on their 35th anniversary but I ran out of time.  So even though the 35th anniversary has come and gone for each of these shows, and even though I've uploaded the superb TDOLZ versions of both shows in the past, I'm going ahead and uploading the 1979-07-23 master audience recording of the first night out of the two in Copenhagen in 1979 right now.  This recording is the best for this date and I did not have it (I don't think I did) back when I uploaded the TDOLZ versions a year or two ago.

All thanks goes to "weedwacker" for both Copenhagen 1979 masters and for transferring them and sharing them with us.  These two shows, one of which I'm uploading now, are arguably two of the best all-time Led Zeppelin audience recordings in sound quality.

The TDOLZ version, named Copenhagen Warmups, blows my old Silver Rarities version's sound out of the water.  Back when I had originally uploaded the TDOLZ Copenhagen Warmups copies I'd stated, "The TDOLZ version is the best sounding versions of either show that I've ever heard".  It is still up there at the very top and it is difficult to decide which is better even today.  But I am convinced the unaltered master copy being shared here today is the very best I've run across so far.  Read underneath the links for more details on why it is the best.  But for now, I'm moving on to the show details.

Here are some notes from "weedwacker" on this recording.  I'm doing a copy and paste of them from his text file:

Recorded from the floor using an Uher tape deck and Sennheiser mics. This is an excellent audience recording. This is very similar sound-wise to Copenhagen Warmups (TDOLZ) with the exception this is a tad warmer and fuller sounding whereas CW is louder volume wise and a tad flater sounding from it.

The above notes are very true.  I looked at the waveform for both TDOLZ's Copenhagen Warmups and this master audience recording.  And the recording level on the master tapes is lower than the amplified version released by TDOLZ.  I could see why it was amplified by TDOLZ, however, it did not need to be.  I do not understand why the amplification causes a flatter sound in the audio, but something does and I know "weedwacker" is a qualified Zeppelin fan capable of determining this.  And the master audience recordings definitely are a cleaner and more full sounding final product too.

The amplified version put out by TDOLZ is still superb but the tracks do have a flatter sound.  I likely would not have noticed (or known) what the cause of the slight sound difference was had I not read "weekwacker's" notes.  But without any doubt in my mind, this unaltered master recording is the best of them all.

Led Zeppelin: 1977-07-24 Oakland, CA (FLAC_AUD Source 1 & 2 Mix_3 CD)

If you saw my post yesterday, then you know that 37 years ago today Led Zeppelin played their last American show ever!  It was at the Day on the Green concert event that ran for many years (1973 - 1991) and was put on by te famous promoter Bill Graham.  After his death in 1991, the event was never held again as far as I know.  My two favorite bands, Journey and Led Zeppelin, were both a part of it and played Day on the Green though!

This recording of Led Zeppelin's last American show is a mix of the sources 1 and 2 recordings.  Source 1 is commonly referred to as the Silver Rarities recording and source 2 is referred to as the Missing Link source.  Both references are the bootleg label names the sources are associated with.  There are other sources/recordings that have surfaced of this show too.  For instance, I also had a source 3 recording but it is nowhere near as good in sound quality as sources 1 or 2 are.

I sometimes wonder what Led Zeppelin might have done differently (musically speaking) had they known this was going t be their last American show ever.  And I've come to this conclusion.  Nothing!  Every show was unique and different already so they really didn't need to change the recipe up at all.  After all, 'the song never remained the same' long enough to get bored by it.

Source 1 is the more familiar recording from this date, which is pretty clear and well-balanced, but plagued with cuts in at least six songs and between many numbers; source 2 is more complete, but not as clear--therefore I opted to use source 2 only to patch the missing pieces of source 1. Both recordings varied in pitch throughout, so a true "matrix" would've been extremely difficult and more of an undertaking than I was willing to tackle. The only thing of note that's really missing are the first few seconds (5-6 seconds at most) of 'The Battle of Evermore', which was missed by both tapers.

Here's a breakdown of what I did to create this version of the show:

*Pitch-corrected source 1
*Patched missing pieces of source 1 with source 2 (after matching the pitch)
*Restored the correct running order, with 'Trampled Under Foot' coming between 'Bron-Y-Aur Stomp' and 'White Summer/Black Mountain Side'--source 1 mistakenly had it after 'Kashmir'
*Evened out volume in each channel where necessary (not in too many places)
*Removed approximately one zillion semi-faint digital clicks, mostly in the right channel of source 1

Since the person who did the work on this two source mix didn't sign their text file, I've got no clue who they are and cannot give them credit in this post.  But if they're out there and see this post, thanks for putting together this mix!

Memorabilia from the LedZeppelin.com official site is all I was able to find as far as any artwork related material goes.  It's in a folder titled "memorabilia".  I don't like mixing artwork from other labels even if the setlist matches because it can muddy the waters in the lineage as it gets spread around.

This show is more enjoyable and better spounding  than the previous days show in my opinion.  The recordings are cleaner.  I think the band sounds more energetic and tight in the way they play the songs too.  Maybe they were ready for a break and were glad this was the last show on their 1977 tour and it showed in their performance?  Who can really say or know?

"Mystery Train", also played in San Diego on this 1977 tour, is played in this last USA Zeppelin show but they finished off this show without "Black Dog" which they had played the day before.  Nobody could have known at the time that this was going to be the last time Led Zeppelin played in the United States.  So this became a very historic show if for no other reason than that.

I may upload some other copies, mixes, versions, or whatever of this show today and/or the 1979-07-24 Copenhagen master audience recording from 35 years ago today a little later too?  I'll just have to see how long it takes and if I have time to do it.

July 23rd and 24th are simultaneous special days with Led Zeppelin shows.  The 7/23 and 7/24 1977 shows were the last two shows ever in America.  And the dates were their two warmup dates in Copenhagen in 1979 as they prepared for what would wind up being Led Zeppelin's final tour ever.  A year later, drummer John Bonham died and the group disbanded.

So in celebration of their second to last show ever in America, here is the source 1 recording of that show played 37 years ago today.

* The TLH CDDA/MPEG test, not a good source for lossiness testing, has mixed results on this show.  The show is likely lossless and fine, but if you want to confirm via FA and SA methods, please do and let me know.  The reason I am trusting this is lossless is due to the names associated with this copy.  They're well respected in the Zeppelin boots and remastering fields and they would not put up a lossy show.  TLH is notorious for giving bad test results to good, lossless recordings and this is likely another example of that happening!

Nobody knew this was going to be Led Zeppelin's second from last show in America.  But it was.  Three years later John Bonham died and the band called it quits.  Putting aside the small reunion shows like 1985's Live Aid, Led Zeppelin has never played America again and likely never will.

There seem to be two sources for this show and if I can find the time today I'll upload Source 2.

Memorabilia from the LedZeppelin.com official site is all I was able to find as far as any artwork related material goes.  I downloaded the low resolution ticket scan, articles about this sold out show, and other materials and put them into a folder.  It's great to see that Led Zeppelin did go out in style in the USA at least and closed with sold out shows.  But really?  I mean; what else would you expect from them anyhow :-)

Even though I uploaded another copy of this show from a request for it a little over six weeks ago, I figured I'd go ahead and upload this version of it today and on it's 41st Anniversary.

This is the Empress Valley Supreme Disc copy of the show.  I am leaving this upload "as is" because today I do not have the time to do all the work I normally do to a project.  I will check for lossiness, verify the supplied ffp file, and copy and paste this web page's info as the text file.  I can do all of this fast.  But I'm not naming the tracks or embedding the metadata information into them today.

Seems like today is another anniversary too.  It's the 45th anniversary of man landing on the moon.  So just four year later Led Zeppelin landed (not for the first time though) on Rhode Island.  It kind of puts into perceptive how long ago this show really was.

I just realized this is my 100th Zeppelin upload here at BBBB!

Here is an upgrade in sound quality I believe to the EVSD copy of this same show I uploaded two years (and a day) ago.  I'd wanted to upload this last night on it's 37th anniversary when I realized what the date was.  But I just didn't have time before I had to get to sleep.  And wouldn't you know it?  I still didn't sleep like I was trying to so I'm up much earlier than I planned.

Anyhow, this is the Tarantura 2000 copy of the show and this is suppose to be straight from the soundboard and not a video rip.  Oh yea, I guess one of these days I'll have to upload one of the DVD sets for this show too :-)

* This is one of those examples where TLH miserably failed at the CDDA test.  I left the TLH CDDA Test text file I created in the upload so you can see for yourself.  It shows to be with a 95% likeliness to be an MPEG (lossy) source.  But it isn't and there is a FA (frequency analysis) jpeg of the testing done on the audio in a better way of getting accurate results.  This was verified too by others and it is NOT a lossy recording.

It's been stated that Tarantura put a little reverb in the audio as well as brought the audience noise up a little between songs on this release.  The same person who shared this recording and made those statements also states this is from a video rip and they believe it is not truly straight from the soundboard as Tarantura clains it is.  I'm not sure myself.  But it does sound like a better recording than the other 5 copies of this date I have on my hard drive.

I want to try and locate the Genuine Masters and Watchtower label releases of this show.  I have neither of those and they are both great labels that do great work.  They reportedly use this same source that Tarantura 2000 used here.  I personally like the sound on this version and I think most of you will too.

Def Leppard: 2014-07-13 Dallas, TX (FLAC_Bootradr Master AUD_44.1 kHz/16 bit_1 CD)

First off, I'd like to say thank you Andy for the tickets to this show!  If it hadn't been  for his generosity I wouldn't have been able to have been at this concert event.  I had an excellent time Sunday night in Dallas at the KISS/Def Leppard concerts.  It was a blast and both bands rocked out all night.

The KISS show will be up within a few days at most.  I'll get it uploaded as soon as I have a chance to do the work putting it together.

I'm uploading a 44.1 kHz/16 bit and 96 kHz/24 bit version of both the Def Leppard show and the Kiss show when all is said and done.  I already uploaded the 96/24 version and this is the 44/16 (CD standard) version being uploaded now.

I'm also including about 50 high resolution photos I shot (out of over 500 the whole night).  I was able to get some great shots of both bands thankfully with my Canon SX30IS camera I slipped in.  Well, they really don't care anymore and the girl taking tickets and "inspecting" bags saw it in my camera bag because I really didn't even try to hide it.  But I didn't wear it around me neck walking in so I "slipped" it in :-)

Anyhow, I'm hoping two things will come out of the images.  I'm hoping (a) someone will create some high quality artwork and share it and (b) someone will take the 96/24 audio version and create a DVD-A using the photos.  My DVD-A creating experience has led me to believe I do not have a program that does it losslessly.  If anyone feels like doing this, please leave a comment and let me know.  If not, enjoy the shots!

It was suppose to reach 100°F Sunday and it very well may have.  Joe Elliott mentioned the Phoenix show being hot but he said it was not as hot as it was in Dallas.  I really can't imagine why the artists get up on stage wearing coats and stuff that.  It would make you extra hot (well, Kiss has to I guess).  But whatever the reason, they do and he was right.  The Texas heat is here and for the next few months each outdoor concert is likely to only get hotter.

But the heat didn't seem to bother anyone in the crowd and by the time Def Leppard was halfway through their set the crowd was getting more and more excited and into the show and had forgotten about any heat.

I haven't seen KISS since 1985 whereas I've seen Def Leppard a half dozen times in recent years (since early 2000's).  I have to say I was honestly blown away by both bands.  Def Leppard had never sounded better (as far as when I've heard them live) than in their show in Dallas on 2012-09-03.  Or so I thought!  I believe this show was a better played and better sounding show than the previous 2012 Dallas show even.  And the 2012 show was indoors too.  And KISS was much, much better than I was expecting too.  They put on a superb sounding, very cool special effects rock 'n' roll show.  I'm still trying to decide which band I enjoyed more?

First off, I'd like to say thank you Andy for the tickets to this show!  If it hadn't been  for his generosity I wouldn't have been able to have been at this concert event.  I had an excellent time Sunday night in Dallas at the KISS/Def Leppard concerts.  It was a blast and both bands rocked out all night.

The KISS show will be up within a few days at most.  I'll get it uploaded as soon as I have a chance to do the work putting it together.

I'm uploading a 44.1 kHz/16 bit and 96 kHz/24 bit version of both the Def Leppard show and the Kiss show when all is said and done.  For right now, I'm uploading the 96/24 Def Leppard show (this upload) with the 44/16 to follow right behind it.

I'm also including about 50 high resolution photos I shot (out of over 500 the whole night).  I was able to get some great shots of both bands thankfully with my Canon SX30IS camera I slipped in.  Well, they really don't care anymore and the girl taking tickets and "inspecting" bags saw it in my camera bag because I really didn't even try to hide it.  But I didn't wear it around me neck walking in so I "slipped" it in :-)

Anyhow, I'm hoping two things will come out of the images.  I'm hoping (a) someone will create some high quality artwork and share it and (b) someone will take the 96/24 audio and create a DVD-A using the photos.  My DVD-A creating experience has led me to believe I do not have a program that does it losslessly.  If anyone feels like doing this, please leave a comment and let me know.  If not, enjoy the shots!

It was suppose to reach 100°F Sunday and it very well may have.  Joe Elliott mentioned the Phoenix show being hot but he said it was not as hot as it was in Dallas.  I really can't imagine why the artists get up on stage wearing coats and stuff that.  It would make you extra hot (well, Kiss has to I guess).  But whatever the reason, they do and he was right.  The Texas heat is here and for the next few months each outdoor concert is likely to only get hotter.

But the heat didn't seem to bother anyone in the crowd and by the time Def Leppard was halfway through their set the crowd was getting more and more excited and into the show and had forgotten about any heat.
