One thing is known regarding many of the soundboards that have surfaced through the years. Led Zeppelin did record shows (how many we have no idea), and during their 1973 US tour, they were making a video. The video, The Song Remains The Same, was not released until 1976 as the band was dealing with issues of their own (car wrecks, family member deaths, drug problems, etc). So chances are good that many of these 1973 soundboards were recorded with the intent of possibly being used for the video they were making. And chances are also good there may be some more 1973 shows videotaped we haven't seen I'd imagine. And on top of that, shows that were recorded by the band on various tours were distributed amongst the band members, managers, and the likes. So it is easy to see how one Led Zeppelin member's tape of a show could have easily been copied and shared with their friends, family members, or whoever they let listen to it. So it's not too far "out there" to imagine this recording may have been from Jimmy Page's tape and he shared it with someone.
Jason Bonham, the late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's son and most current Led Zeppelin drummer too, is known to be an avid Led Zeppelin bootleg collector as is Jimmy Page also. And if you could imagine the shows Jason Bonham had around the house after his dad died in 1980, wow, he had a treasure trove of shows I'm sure. My point is this. There are many stories, rumors, and even truths passed down though the years as to where various soundboards came from. Many people think Jason Bonham has leaked a lot of the 1980 shows. And I hope he has and still does. But the chance of us knowing the truth is very slim to none I'd say. As long as the music keeps surfacing, and whether it came from a band member or an alien from outer space, it really isn't too important. The important thing is they finally do surface and we eventually get them.
Led Zeppelin's late manager, Peter Grant, couldn't have done anything better than what has happened to keep Led Zeppelin a household name. Other than what has happened in the "bootleg" world with the trading and sharing (and yes, illegal selling by some labels) that has been going on for nearly 50 years, you'd have to still be putting out new, great music each year to keep fans so interested in any band. Both audience and soundboard recordings of the band's shows have been occurring and circulating since 1968. Actually, it would have been very smart of Grant to have acted so against bootlegging of shows and at the same time have been slipping a few out there to keep the fans interested between tours. Hmmm, it kind of "makes me wonder...sure does"!
I really haven't done too much comparison between this Bertha Remaster 1st generation soundboard recording and the other remastered versions or labels I have for this same show. It seems most of the sources nowadays stem from the 1st generation source anyhow and they all sound excellent. The real reason I chose the Bertha Remaster version is because I know the work was done correctly and by knowledgeable people (unlike some remasters).
I hope you enjoy another 1973 soundboard from April of another great Led Zeppelin show. And we all hope the last part of the show surfaces someday soon like I mentioned in a previous 1973 upload. We know the shows were likely complete in being recorded. We just don't know why many of the 1973 US shows haven't been complete once they surfaced. Hopefully one day...
